You know, listening to this again with ATMOS restored today and smiling because how good this music and the ATMOS mix sounds, even if lossy.

it does make me wonder why so many other ATMOS mixes go out that fail to take full advantage of ATMOS capabilities like this one? lazy up mixing? Less talented producers/mixers? poor quality multi tracks?
Those things (although I’m not exactly sure what “poor quality multis” is).

Plus sometimes the multis may not even be available. And perhaps most importantly, good mixing is time and money - particularly with stuff originally recorded to analog tape in the pre-digital era. The return on doing a quality surround mix on a vintage album probably isn’t as good as we like to think it is.

My personal opinion is that many tracks are mixed for playback via headphones rather than a home theater system.

I think it's mostly the mixers, although there are limitations with older tracks. Greg Penny presumably mixed all of the Elton John tracks and well-respected engineers highlight Penny's work on Rocketman as one of the best tracks out there even though he mixed it in the early days. I think a lot of the mixers are still figuring things out.

I agree. There was a long YouTube video featuring a few experienced surround engineers where it was stated they knew of some new mixers working with only headphones for listening tests. We need to identify those headphone engineers.
...... and have two more ears surgically attached :devilish:

Yes but at least Rust in Peace was actually discrete and had some very fun elements (panning, etc.)
Yeah, Mills Logan usually does a solid job and Rust In Peace is no exception. My only gripe is that it's quite bass-shy in comparison to the original - he told me that Dave Mustaine wanted the sound of the album 'updated' for the Atmos mix, so perhaps that's why?

The lack of bass could be related to the compression of the stream but I’m not 100% sure. The 2004 stereo remix actually had punchier and more pronounced bass than the original 1990 mix but the new Atmos seems to have the character of the 1990 mix, except for the drums which sound like the 2004 remix, unfortunately.

Listening to Megadeth's We'll Be Back from The Sick And Dying in Dolby Atmos. I like it, all 4 heights, front and surrounds, going off.
Center channel basically non existent.

What is your opinion of Rust?

Two new singles. Meant to post them the other day but never got around to it.

A remix of a song from the new The Weeknd album done by that album's producer Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never, the artist behind the Magic OPN release where the blu ray mysteriously had a different mix

And a bonus part 5 for the 4 part EP from Erland Cooper that I posted a while back:
