Back Home - Eric Clapton (DVD-A DualDisc).

Bass-tastic!! How to give your sub a thorough workout! :p

I still love this one, the mix isn't wild.. but in the same way as EC's Reptile DVD-A it works very well and this sounds just as gorgeous!

Lead vocals hard in the centre with elements of the rhythm section in there too, with lead vox spread out to the front L&R where the bulk of the instrumentation is mixed too, lots of lovely backing vocals in the rears and string synths, horns, effects and things back there too, with some nice back to front panning, etc.

I wish more people would give this the time of day.. it seems to have been overlooked back in the day and forgotten pretty much since.. I know there's minus points (latter day Clapton gets too easily dismissed for being MOR/lightweight compared to the EC guitar god of old) and its a dreaded DualDisc after all.. but it's a solid album, with a sufficiently different feel to Reptile (which I also love but is quite different) the surround mix gets more things right than it gets wrong and it sounds wonderful! Glow - Peter White (M/C SACD).

From one guitar maestro to another.. and from one subwoofer marathon to another -- wow is there some serious sub-bass on this disc! :yikes

Mix-wise and sonically it reminds me very much of a lot of the "Heads Up" Telarc releases I've heard (Spyro Gyra comes to mind in particular) especially with their "coming at you from all sides" approach, here you have lead guitar across all 3 with lead guitar and mid-bass in the centre, together with muted ambience of lead instrument in rears and a heap of other instruments/sound-effects/percussion back there.

Perfect for a Sunday afternoon kickback with a glass of vino :friday:

Crazy Eyes - Poco (DTS CD).

ah now this is one I've not played in a while.. What FUN FUN FUN! I love these mega discrete-o-tastic quad mixes!

you can be in no doubt your surround speakers are on with this one! WOOO!!

:51banana:

Got my recent purchase Poncho Sanchez (Out of Sight). SACD.

Absolutely pristine audio experience. Amazing mix....full use of all speakers. Good stuff.

Out of Sight by Poncho Sanchez is one of my Surround Sound SACD favorites!

It has guest performances by Ray Charles, Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave fame), Billy Preston
and trombonist Fred Wesley and saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis from the James Brown Band.

If you can find Out of Sight by Poncho Sanchez on SACD - grab it !

how do you rate the Conga Blue SACD bmoura? for me it's another stunner in every respect! (I prefer the album a bit to Out Of Sight!.. the materials even stronger!).

you know, its a shame thinking about it.. back when Telarc & Concord were doing their Hi-Rez surround thing this genre of music (and Jazz) were pretty well-represented.. but who is releasing discrete multichannel high resolution music like this Poncho Sanchez right now? no-one :( :(

I like Conga Blue. Both of the SACDs had me discovering Poncho Sanchez. But the guests on Out of Sight put it ahead of CB in my listening room.

oh yes! there's certainly an embarrassment of riches with the list of guest artists on Out Of Sight!

are these the only two surround mixes of Poncho Sanchez's work? (can you tell i want more? haha!) no lovely Quad mixes hiding anywhere!? :p

is there any hope now of more music like this ever appearing in surround again? or was this just a brief window of time when all the stars aligned and we got fantastically well-recorded and mixed gorgeous music that wasn't Classical or Rock (or prog rock!) or Pop... which is all we get nowadays! boo..

not that I'm complaining about getting new releases of surround music! I'm happy to take whatever comes along now! It just seems so sad that no-one's releasing beautiful Latin/Jazz etc in surround anymore :(

All this talk of Frampton Comes Alive prompted me to spin my DVD-A's. I've had the LP's, Sweet Thunder 1/2 speed LP's, dbx LP's, CD's, Gold CD's, 2 CD expanded, SACD's & DVD-A's. The DVD-A's are the way to go. Yes, the mix is audience in the rears. It is a classic album, though it's hardly good enough to have been the all-time best selling album before it was over taken by Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Both the 5.1 mix and music of that are light years better. Still, Baby I Love Your Way is one of the best tracks by anyone.

Hey gang....got my copy of TARKUS today. Emerson Lake and Palmer. Compliments of Steven Wilson on the surround mix. Simply another astounding job by Steve on this one. When you consider the age, this is amazing. Will it ever sound better than this? Nope. The surround mix is phenomenal...of course. I love this, money well spent.

Oh great, don't get me started. Peter Frampton was my first "official" rock concert. Saw him in Normal, Illinois in 1976....that single show stunned me and I was hooked.
