at the time i was categorically a "DVD-A til i die" man 🧐

until it started looking increasingly likely those Elton 5.1s were not coming on anything other than SACD anytime soon 🤷‍♀️
i already had the EJ SACDs and some others (incl the infamous DSOTM) when i started picking up MultiCh SACDs in earnest around 12-13 years ago and it hit a personal peak around 7 years ago where i was getting more SACDs than anything else in surround.
funnily, after the HFPA thing and the Surround Master / SQ & QS and subsequent CD-4 & Q8 dalliances, its been back to pretty much all SACDs again now with DV's flow of gems. long may they continue!! 🌈🥰

What I DO know is that senseless format war confused the public and doomed both formats.....but what salvaged SACD was it's 'hybrid' ability compatible with RBCD players and adoption by most classical labels.......and a credible reason Dutton Vocalion has resurrected it for their fabulous QUAD reissues.

And regarding DSOTM ..... it WAS pre~announced as an MLP DVD~A on the Capitol Label until SONY made Capitol an offer they couldn't refuse. Wish I could find THAT article. IMO, release of DSOTM on SACD singlehandedly doomed the DVD~A format......and SONY KNEW IT!

I was around at the time DSOTM came out and I have no memory of it being "pre-announced" as anything other than a SACD - does anyone have any articles or other proof from the time that it was originally going to be a DVD-A?

I know this story emerged later (from who knows where) and I'm wondering if it's just sort of become part of revisionist history. Even the 5.1 version of DSOTM on the Immersion box set BluRay has DSD ultrasonic noise in it, which leads me to believe that the DSD master is the only master and it was never originally intended for a PCM format like DVD-A.

Like Minds, Adam. I too was a diehard DVD~A 'MAN' until those Universal EJ SACDs started popping up along with other choice SACD titles.....like the Dylans, and Columbia House started blowing out multi~ch SACDs for $7 a pop.

And yes, SONY never entered a format war they coudn't win ....er, except for BETA vs. VHS .... Even though Beta with its faster 'writing speed' was technically better .... JVC won that battle. And SONY missed the boat on Laserdisc....where Pioneer excelled ..... but in the end DVD and then BD~V won out and SONY was on TOP again.

SONY .... NO BALONEY ..... Mon Homme........

NOW, Let's get BUSY, SONY Japan, with those QUAD SACDs in special 7" packaging ...........

Weird, because I was a diehard DVD~A zealot at the time and it WAS announced as a DVD~A ....swear to THAT. At the time, CAPITOL RECORDS was releasing ONLY DVD~As, albeit not in large numbers, and that article stating that SONY, knowing that a slam dunk title like DSOTM could stem the tide of that silly format war, made Capitol and the PF camp a very generous monetary offer. And what DID make sense in the end was SACD's hybrid capabilities making DSOTM capable of playing in ANY CD/Car player as well. Our local Costco was selling the hybrid SACD of DSOTM for $9.99 with VERY LITTLE indication that it was an SACD anywhere on the back/front of the disc ....... potential customers only knew it was an IMPROVED REMASTER! A Savvy marketing move?

And as we ALL know, Dave, a LOT of those pre~announced DVD~A titles never reached fruition when the plug was pulled on DVD~A...and for that matter pre~announced SACD titles as well!

..and so Our Hero, Dave, the enigmatic voice of reason, having deigned to momentarily join us on insanity beach, returns from whence He came, leaving us mere mortals to ponder not only the meaning of the Dark Side Of The Moon but indeed our very existence 🤔

A fun mix. She's only twenty; sometimes she comes off as wise beyond her years, and sometimes . . . well, twenty! I get the feeling the whole release is sort of an anti-Norah Jones (I mean, note the title!)

I like Norah Jones. If Nellie is Norah opposite polarity that intrigues me too. I am Libra. We stay in avg balance by swinging from one end to the other. Tonight: Ammonia Avenue followed by Nellie. Whoa!

I'm a big fan of Norah's release; me and Mrs. Jones--we got a thing going on
