I believe he's the same one who did the 5.1 mix on the album, "Forget Yourself" by The Church, which I'm listening to now by the way...

Well.. I learn something new everyday in this place..!

Actually today I learned more than one thing...

..
1.) there's a fella called Chris Haynes does surround mixing,
2.) there's a 5.1 of The Church ( :yikes ..!!)..

oh and Strongbow and Pinot Grigio don't mix well with chicken tikka massala.. :party

It is a Silverline (DualDisc) though. I don't think it's all that bad of a mix, but I'm not quite sure how you'd feel about it.

Chickie tikka massala......Adam? Eating well these days, huh? Perhaps a shot of Jack and a Bud on the side (Marpow's 'poison') would be MORE agreeable to your 'delicate' palette?

If you CAN find the Church DVD~A 5.1, I'd say GO for it. Is that Pope "Frank" groovin' to the beat?

And unlike Clint's aversion to Silverline products, I'd say they were a 50/50 proposition. Some of LIVE From the Front well play VERY well in stereo (like the Pat Benatar DVD~A). And yes, some of them REALLY sucked but we won't talk about THEM:couch

I think you will find that your 50/50 estimate is extremely high for a success rate...but that's ok...I still you think you are cool:) and a great addition to the forum...but you should realize that perhaps you are in the minority on your feelings about Silverline...lots of bad karma with that company...check this out

Well Clint, I have tried to like Silverline.. and I'm with Ralph in as much as there are some good ones in amongst them..
however, I am now rather burned on them - and to be fair a lot of 2nd tier and more obscure modern surround stuff - as I tried to give these things another shot last year around similar time I went off on my SQ vinyl trip, picking up many DualDiscs and Silverlines that I had passed up on over the years..

and to be frank going from stuff like the Silverline's to SQ records was just staggering - and that shocked me.. SQ was supposed to be a byword for **** in the same way Silverline was and yet there was no comparison..

..at that point I decided I would have to become more choosey in my surround music purchasing (for the first time in years, as I think you know prior I would buy anything with 5.1 on it!) and totally threw myself into the SQ thing instead, the Silverlines and the obscure SACDs/DTS/DVD-A and DualDiscs were the casualties.

I'll no doubt renege on that at some point but thats how I've felt the best part of the last few months at least, any new 5.1 things have to be very good to impress once you're fully immersed in day to day listening of the old Quads, many of those Quads were just sublime surround productions.. and that was like 5 decades ago, they really tried their best with the gear they had to remix it all back in the day and it shows, many stand up really well today.. there's no excuse these days for sloppy surround, so Silverline (and co) are victims of the SQ slaughter! :D

Thanks for your VERY kind words, Clint and the feeling is mutual.

Regarding my stance on Silverline: I'm coming from a different place in my assessment of Silverline DVD~As. My wild and crazy and laborious and expensive disc treatments have saved MANY a Silverline disc from the trashbin and I am also using the fantastic Meridian DVD~A/V 800 machine (which I just had upgraded) which makes these discs sound even better than ALL my Universal disc players (Oppo 105 included) combined. It's been discontinued which is why I spent a small fortune upgrading it. Also I have a Meridian 808 reference series RBCD player which includes one of the best DVD~A stereo players on the market which makes those insanely crappy Front Row discs sound better when one plays the stereo layers (and dispenses with the horrible attempt at surround). One has to realize that MOST of the Silverline 'masters' originated as stereo...especially the ones culled from Sanctuary Records.

And as the ole saying goes......if Silverline didn't exist....someone would have to invent it.

But the ones that DO sound good, sound REALLY GOOD (via the Meridian 800/Ralphie Tweaks) and some sound as good as those from the Majors.

OK, my 50/50 assessment might've been TOO generous but back in the day I paid $12 each (or less) for most of them and now I see that some of the better Silverlines are fetching relatively BIG bucks which does say something.

BTW, The Vanguard Classical Silverline DVD~As sound excellent (about 15 of them were released) but it took a lot of elbow grease to accomplish THAT.....NO small feat!

(Well I talked it up so I ought to really listen to it since its been a while.. )

Listening to now in surround...

Isn't that one of the Columbia Quads Sony mucked around with the channels on for the SACD?

I know they royally mucked up the Boulez Conducts Bartok SACD, the producer who redid it for 5.1 SACD thought the old Quad was too discrete or something, the ******* *****..

Boulez Conducts Ravel is a superb Quad transfer to SACD (which is 5 channel). This one was done right! It's immersive with discrete rear channels. Highly recommended!!

Boulez Conducts Bartok (SACD) was screwed up. Its rear channels are only ambient. The performance is wonderful, though.
