I don't have this title yet but I was so excited to see it announced. Even though it's from a dolby b encoded Quad Open Reel, this remains a very sought after title and HDTT does INCREDIBLE Open Reel transfers. And to have it released in the original QUAD on BD~A makes it that much more exciting. From London Phase 4:

I had never heard of this company before. They have some very interesting titles.

So all this is legit? I know I shouldn't even have to ask knowing already QQ does not stand for the promotion and marketing of bootleg and pirated materials on their forum. But it just strikes me as odd, not sure why.

Absolutely legit, quicksrt. They even offer DSD downloads which fellow poster bmoura swears by. They utilize absolute state of the art equipment for their transfers and I have about 60 of their Open Reel transfers on DVD~V (96/24) and they really do sound superb.

Fantasy World of Bernard Hermann has been one of those RARE Audiophile titles that have been reproduced on almost every imaginable RBCD format (Gold, JVC XRCD, etc) but to hear it in QUAD for the first time should be that rarest of treats. They also offer a cheaper BD~A version w/o fancy case/liner notes for $14.99 (if you scroll down on choice of formats).

Good to hear! Are the Blu-Ray discs recordable ones or the standard pressed ones? I'd go for the $14.99 as well for the two titles that interest me.

They're recordable BD~Rs, Simon A....24/192 4.0. All of their discs are custom made on demand and they make a point of advertising: Our Discs are 'burned' NOT 'stamped.'

Are they using consumer reels for their mastering? I think this question and the answer is important.

This should answer your question. It's from the "About Us" section of their website:

High Definition Tape Transfers is the brainchild of an avid 2 & 4 track open-reel collector and a serious audiophile. Collected over the years, many of our tapes contain forgotten performances of historical importance. Our mission is to preserve and share these rare gems with other music lovers by painstakingly remastering them with the finest state-of-the-art equipment and best techniques available.

Our very special releases are your gateway to a unique musical and sonic adventure. Every one of the techniques of the HDTT transcription process makes important, audible contributions to the quality of the encoded digital signal. All of them together make sonic magic. The improvements with HDTT releases produce unusually good sound quality and are apparent on any kind of system.

Consumer reels, it just reeks of pirated material.

I'm sorry I worked in licensing at MCA, and audiophile reissues at Classic Records, after a stint at Fripp's DGM, and a job at EMI before that. Sony Music was my first job as a temp in catalog dev.

So I'm not right off the turnip truck.

I understand where you're coming from. I never meant to imply that you did not know you stuff.

Yes - 90125 - SpecWeb Upmix from 24x96 HDtracks... This is friggin AMAZING! This album really sounds discrete through SpecWeb and the sonics are fantastic... Highly recommended for trying this software out(y)

Most of HDTT Open Reels are in the public domain. I recall a few years back a soon to be released title was yanked from ever reaching fruition as there WAS a copyright infringement problem.

I was an avid Open Reel Collector and have noticed over the past few years that some of these QUAD Open Reels are fetching close to $1K EACH on ebay!

What I do admire about these 1970 era Reels is that most of them were produced from relatively 'fresh as daisy' Master Tapes and have not suffered the ravages of time a lot of archived masters have endured.

I totally understand your issue with "pirating" and I can assure you that with HDTT that is not the case (except for the rare example I've stated).

A list of currently available BD~R 5.0 and 4.0 recordings available from HDTT [Some are from newly recorded sources, as well, NOT from Open Reels]: http://www.highdeftapetransfers.com/search?q=blu+ray

Roger Waters The Wall. New Blu Ray of his concert. Discrete DolbyTrueHD 7.1. Sick. Unreal show to see in person. Great home experience. Superb separation and film.

I agree. If there is any room for doubt avoidance is the best policy.

I don't have any problem with trading or selling or giving away copies of things. I'm as guilty as the next guy myself. No angel here. But when you try and state that there is no active copyright, it's all PD, and you link the site to a forum that does not agree with having that kind of material linked, it's crossed the line IMO.

There is a place for their efforts, and then there is a place for legit reissues. Let's not confuse what it is that they do.

Btw, copyrights have been extended on record masters in several countries, I'm sure some of us know that. 60s and 70s reel to reels are well within this new extended protection.

Now with that out of the way, I like what they are doing and how they make up their pricing as the go. It's a ballsy enterprise. And I suggest picking up some of the really good ones before they get their plug pulled on them.

I e bought some DTS product, some of it I then posted to torrent sites, and some of it I sold and made my investments back.

Thanks for the info quad-ears...I'm a nut for Bernard Herrman's soundtrack work both with and without Hitchcock et al. I immediately started drooling at the prospect of owning "Citizen Kane" and the compilation set transferred onto blu-Ray audio....

It does not look legit to me at all. Anyone have proof that these titles are actually licensed from the publishers/artists/labels?

Loving it...

Love it too Gene, play it quite a fair bit.. but.. have you got the 30th Anniversary DVD-V set with the 5.1 remix of the Fly Like An Eagle album too?
Some of the tracks are very well mixed on the newer 5.1 set I reckon (and despite/inspite of the Dolby Digital encoding, I prefer the sound they got by going back to the multitrack masters over the Quad in some instances imho.. try it thru Foobar maybe and see how they compare to you? :p )
