Can you describe your system? Speaker angles, etc? What do the extra speakers do for 5.1? 4.0?

I keep the side surrounds just slightly ahead of the seating position. Rears are in the ceiling, more the result of room compromise than anything else. Sound depends on the source, some 5.1 music is discrete and will not find its way to the rears, but most 5.1 ends up in all four surrounds. Pics here:

4 1/2 - Steven Wilson Blu-Ray Audio

WOW! Would you expect me to say anything else...even after the first song? On song number 5 now...Vermillioncore. Wow again...each song is generally VERY different. This is one a wild rocker with some super sweet keyboards bombing around in the speakers. Couple songs are slow, quiet and very moody/somber...but so far, I'd say it has the harder edge that many of us like (PT like in some cases)

I would agree overall with your assessment concerning the music. I don't have my Blu-Ray copy yet, but I have been able to sit with this mini-album for several days in stereo. At first, it seemed really disjointed and not cohesive at all, the last thing you would expect from someone like Steven Wilson, but while it lacks in cohesion, all of the pieces of music stand up very well on their own as individual tracks, which is something you don't get on some of his Porcupine Tree albums. (i.e. some tracks only make sense and sound good within the context of the album.)
I would also agree that many tracks on this mini-album sounds like they could have been Porcupine Tree tracks. "Happiness III" for example was written during the writing sessions for the "Deadwing" album. Overall this is a great release, and I can't wait to get my Blu-Ray in to experience the full surround immersion for myself! :)

LOL - well, it came a day earlier than they said. It's just killer...IMO. He remakes the Porcupine Tree song Don't Hate Me from the Stupid Dream era....just awesome....and it has a Pink Floydish Sax solo right in the middle. Man...

That sax solo is courtesy of Theo Travis. Not only has he been a part of Steven Wilson's band off-and-on since 2011, but he also played this same sax solo on the original Porcupine Tree recording, and both times, he completely nails it!
What does bother me about this new recording however is Adam Holzman's keyboard solo. I much prefer Richard Barbieri's original approach to the solo, which was a lot more simple, but it fit much better with the song and was a beautiful melody in and of itself. Adam on the other hand sometimes doesn't always know when to hold back, and on this recording, he just sounds like he wants to show off instead of creating beautiful spaces in-between the phrases.
So again, that's just a very small complaint in the midst of what is overall a very stellar and impressive from mini-album from SW. ;)

Yeah, I love DVD-A and blu-ray when they're done really well like with Steven Wilson's remixes - and now Jakko's. One thing that pisses me off though, is how it's such a crapshoot with DVDs as to whether you're going to get a DVD-A or a DVD-V. For example, The Geese and the Ghost by Anthony Phillips gets a DVD-A, yet the Tony Banks reissues are going to be DTS DVDs and Esoteric (Cherry Red) is involved in both cases. And, of course, there's the situation with Steve Hackett's recent DVDs which were actually labeled for DVD-A but came out as DVD-V. I think the industry is determined to phase them out.

I think ignorance and apathy are the driving forces in this constant battle between DVD-V and DVD-A/V, not to mention that it makes a difference in which formats are used based on who the project manager is for a particular release, which in term most of the time determines who they contract to author the DVDs.

Metallica - S&M
Oh yeah, baybay!
Full volume. Brain melting...

The entree sting thing about this show is...
You can pick a symphony only (or band only) 2.0 mix. Listening to just the symphony is very cool!

Gadzooks.. Now even the UK releases are coming out in the U.S before they're available here..!! :yikes

I am officially, Gene, green as a sprout (and I don't do jealousy.. I've usually got this stuff before you lot anyway.. apart from Mike in New Zealand, he always gets this stuff first.. ;) )... dammit.. I wanna hear it! I wanna hear it! I wanna hear it! Come on Amazon you b@st@rdos.. Stand and deliver!!! :flame: (well they did deliver earlier and I was expecting 4 1/2 to be in the packet but NOOOOO... just a load of other crud!) Grrrrrrr.... HULK SMASH..!!!! :D Hahahaha..
Ps. This rant sponsored by Chardonnay.. :smokin

Me too, my 4 1/2 from Amazon has been "dispatching soon" for 2 days, and I've just got a dispatched e-mail for delivery Monday . Amazon used to be reliable for a delivery on release day.

Something that may, or may not have been clear. Songs below are not all in 5.1
The first 7 songs are in 5.1
Songs 8-12 are not...though 8-12 are actually not on main menu, they are part of a sub catagory called "VERSIONS".

View attachment 24894

I guess to comment further on the exact layout of the songs. When you click "PLAY ALL", what you will then get is this:

TRACKS 1-6 as the main tracks.
TRACK 7 is called BONUS

On top of that, the insert they provide clearly only mention songs 1-7, no word at all about the additional tracks...which initially got me worried. I thought somehow there were 2 versions floating around and I got the short-handed one. Read on...

Once you finish listening to all 7 songs...I assumed it would continue with 8. Nope.... Uh-oh I thought... So I go back to the main menu and realize there is a catagory called "VERSIONS". Click on that and then press play and it starts at song 1 again, only within the extras (which I refer to as 8-12 above).

So, regardless of how the song list is presented on Amazon (1-12). That's not the way it is on the disc. It's 1-7 main, then 1-5 in the Versions.@: Yeah, a little confusing at first.

My vinyl copy arrived yesterday and is amazing but this is another stellar 5.1 mix from the god of 5.1 mixes.

Herbie Hancock - Gershwin's World (SACD)

Great disc, great mix. Features Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea.

Snow day here in TN. No travel and no work, so while I'm waiting for "4 1/2" to grace me with its presence, I'm revisiting other Steven Wilson albums, starting with the Blu-Ray of "The Raven That Refused to Sing". :)

Certainly not their best but it's ok, musicwise anyway (still hoping for Images and Words done by Mr. Wilson :worthy in this case :)) even the Dulbymix is acceptable I guess if you like this music (still listening on my travel kit :)). Still hoping they get rid of the singer? though!!
