I'd welcome that. I've got quite a few classical surround SACDs but with only a select few being other than the 'in the hall' approach. Most sound excellent but I'd be curious to learn of titles that bravely place discrete elements in the surrounds.

There's an old Naxos DVD-A of the Four Seasons with Concerto For Double Orchestra on the same disc that had one set of musicians across the front and another in the rears, I'm sure Brett knows the one?

This one..

Steely Dan Gaucho DVD Audio: Clearly a very good disc, just wish the drums (snare, tom?, I'm not instrumentally competent) could have been as good as "My Rival" throughout where they're in the surrounds (bongos?) and hit the mark for me soundwise. As fine as it is and as much as I like it, miss that clean snap of the drums. Don't get me wrong, the mix and content are extraordinary.

A hauntingly beautiful and intense work for orchestra and chorus. A true postwar masterpiece!

Perhaps one needs to be in the proper state of mind to fully appreciate and take everything in. But... If you are into modern, abstract Classical music, then this should be playing on your audio system. The surround mix is superbly immersive with discrete rear channels.

A moving experience!

Sorry if I often post obscure pieces of Classical music. I just find myself being attracted to such music.

Anyway, here is a recording of more accessible, but equally gorgeous music. The immersive surround mix is a joy to listen to. Ravel has long been a favorite composer of mine. Tacet has been generous to also released this delightful recording on Bluray. I am playing the SACD version.

You should never feel the need to apologise! I for one love all your contributions and recommendations, the more left field and out there the better! :teleport: :alienrob: :worthy

Good music is good music! and if no-one posts what they find and like, none of us can try it, so keep the posts up - and funnily enough I was thinking of getting some classical in surround, preferably with the mix surrounding rather than ambience. Any recommendations?

hey man - I agree 100% with everyone's comments about you posting your love of Classical. I have often...and I mean...OFTEN wish I could have some classical music in hi-res.....but there is SO much, I wouldn't know where to start. I love seeing all the stuff you listen to. It's impressive...and keep it up!

Thanks for your kind words, Adam (and everyone!!) And let me express my appreciation for your (and everyone's) enduring support and the wellspring of information & inspiration you ALL give.

I'll stay with something more 'infield' and recommend this lovely performance by the Auryn Quartet of one of Schubert's most heavenly works. Tacet has once again done a terrific job with this immersive surround recording (although the Ravel disc is a bit more immersive). It has also been released on Bluray.

I have 5 Tacet recordings and the surround mixes are true surround mixes - not ambiance. The fidelity is great as well (except for Piano Trios which is fine but not as good as the others). I have bought other labels but those are disappointing (mix-wise) in comparison to Tacet.

Beethoven: Symphonies No. 5 & 6
Mozart: Gran Partita; Fantasia
Rachmaninov · Tchaikovsky: Piano Trios
Schubert, Franz Peter: Octet in F major
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons

There is a Tacet thread although no postings since 2011.

If you had to chose one of those 5 you listed for the "novice"...which one would it be...I'm a little familiar with Vivaldi...
