Last night...one of my all time faves and , to me , a MONSTER of a disc....too much to take in in one sitting (hearing)...

Pat Metheny Group

"Imaginary Day"

Woweeeee!!!!

One of my favourite SACDs and one of MFSL's best.

It's a beautiful recording, isn't it! MoFi's other 4.0 SACDs are worth acquiring if the music interests you and the price is reasonable of course.

Now listening to PentaTone's RQR SACD of Rachmaninov's piano concerto no.2 & Paganini Rhapsody. Haas, Inbal and RSOF's performance is simply gorgeous. The 4.0 recording is excellent...warm, detailed and quite immersive. The string section is often highlighted in the rear channels. Highly recommended!

I have the Ravel coming soon, not the Bolero, but the other one. I cannot wait to hear it.

I already have three version of the Rach 2 but I guess it'll soon be four. :D

Speaking of Rachmaninoff, although Gergiev's SACDs have been a wildly mixed bag (as others have noted he's spread himself far too thin on repertoire, conducting and recording everything in sight but not doing most of the rehearsal personally - and seeming not to know many of the scores that well), his work in the Russian repertoire is unimpeachable, especially his collaborations with Denis Matsuev. Highly recommended.

Listening now to Telarc, SACD, mch, 5.1, very discrete and fun as heck. Junior Brown, "Down Home Chrome". If you are a rock a Billy, country boy, hay seed like me, you'll love this surround disc.

If you like your rockabilly, mark ;

You should check out the J.J.CALE cd/dvd 5.1 DD disc available on concert one. It's live in the studio at Leon Russells Paradise Studios from a 1979 performance, no audience just Cale's band with Leon on organ (and piano ?).

goes double for you , Lute.(y)

And he does play all his classics, btw.

Love this post and pic, thank you Fizzy.. but if I may be so bold as to say, that DVD should not be allowed within a million miles of that beautiful CD-4 LP, imho.. it would pollute the vinyl's 4-channel embedded grooves with its multichannel mediocrity.

That STS 5 ch quad redone mix is still in no way mediocre, freddie ol friend. :D

It just lacks a bit of "punch" that the CD-4 disc has/had. You may want to adjust a setting or two but that quad mix is still quite original and worthy.
I wonder if a dts cd of that quad mix might have been slighty better ?

Oh come on Fizzy ol' bean, surely you jest..!? ;)

STS..? Isn't that something you catch? I always thought that was a typo rather than a new and unique Multichannel presentation, exclusive to that Deluxe Edition..

Forget the mix for a minute, I'm talking about the sound quality..
..to me, the DVD in that set sucks wet dog muck through a moth eaten sock compared to CD-4, Q8 & Quad Reel versions I've heard..
..the only punch I'd like to give that DVD is a punch to its hub to snap it in half, its a disgrace imho.. I wouldn't cross the room to get that disc off the shelf let alone adjust a solitary setting for it at this point.. I tried to eek something out of it 5+ years ago and came to the conclusion you cannot polish a turd :)

Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks SACD: first time I've heard this and I like it, the range is fantastic, comforting low end on up to BD's nasally highs and harmonica. Country folk works for me, who knew?

That might go good with the Poco-Cantamos and Lynard Skynard-Southern Surroundings I listened to yesterday...

Yes of course STS is a typo.

The correct spelling is in the menu, afterall.

Trying to polish a turd you say.? You got a home studio ? Well perhaps you do. I still will play mine, from time to time though.I have no intention of selling it, if that's to be the final solution.:upthumb
I just like the quad mix is all.

And it does not have that "punch" that my CD-4 disc had , can't comment on a Q4 of it, but no doubt it would be great.Sorry to hear you are parking your CD-4 experience so soon via gear problems, disc problems.-Been there, done that, gave up on that.

My only bone to pick is ; Geez Louise, we could surely use more quad Sabbath, or maybe 5.1, of those first few albums of course.
I'm daydreaming though.:smokin

Cantamos in Stereo or from SQ LP, or Q8?

Very good Q8 conversion. I never do stereo when cruising QQ :)

Listening to Eli and the Thirteenth Confession now from a quad reel I think. Damn it sounds great! Doubt the SACD will sound that much better when I eventually get it.

You don't need a home studio (I haven't got one, I've barely got a home!) just a receiver with EQ and tone controls etc to try and buff up a floater.

That DVD is a Quad travesty imho., I'm not going to debate it anymore sorry Fizzy, I respect you so much but I won't be playing that Paranoid DVD anymore to me it is not just an STS DVD it is a Super Audio Crap Disc! :)

Yep, had it with CD-4, for now anyway.. the results do not justify the expense and effort.. you did warn me about it being a potential nightmare.. and I did pay heed to your advice as I always do.. but I was already part way down the CD-4 road at that point.. ah, well, back to the Matrix reloaded! :chill

Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings

This pic from the menu of the standalone cd/dvd. Just could not work out an equitable low price for that box set.

This music is so sublime. And adds to my ever increasing Genesis and solos library of surround.I hope more will come. :sun

That's so fascinating how the DVD authoring and design stayed exactly the same from the box set to the individual releases, even though the individual releases do not bear the "Premonitions" name or artwork at all...
