I had never heard Hanson's music before and I really like these pieces. The 3.0 recording is superb. I wish Mercury had released more Hanson SACDs. I did manage to pick up a few of his albums on CDs.

I agree. Hanson's symphonies are wonderful and contain some beautiful music. If you like Sci-Fi movies, you might have heard symphony no.2. The adagio was used for the end titles of Alien (1979). And there's also E.T., whose soundtrack was inspired by it.

My introduction to Brahms. Not only is the music beautiful but this 1976 Quad recording from Vanguard Records sounds superb. I've ordered most of these Silverline DVD-As and I look forward to discovering more wonderful music. At $10 or less shipped, I'm just glad they're still easily available. Catching up with so many great Multichannel releases is quite the workout.

So don't let yourself think for a second that these Silverline don't sound good. I wouldn't be surprised if these weren't their best sounding releases.

Really? Now that's really interesting…
Next time you play "Please Don't Touch", would you mind posting a picture of that disc's menu screen? I would love to see how different it is compared to the one in the box set. Thanks! :)

In the meantime, listening to the "Trespass" Multichannel SACD from Genesis before heading off to work! :)

Ok, Ryan.

I did my "homework" last night......so here are the menu's of Steve Hackett's other two standalone cd/dvds.

-PLEASE DON'T TOUCH. and. DEFECTOR.

Gotta make room on these shelves for more Genesis solos, I think future releases anyway.

Wow…that's fascinating that they re-authored the DVDs of "Please Don't Touch" and "Defector" but left "Spectral Mornings" as is with the "Premonitions" design.
Yet more reasons as to why they dropped the ball on several aspects of these releases (both the box set and the individual releases.)

Maurice Abravanel / Utah Symphony Orchestra - Brahms: Symphony 2 & 3 (DVD-A)

Thanks for the review, Simon! BTW since you enjoy these works, Brahms other 2 symphonies are equally brilliant IMO. His first is often compared (favorably) with Beethoven's symphonic work. In fact he so revered Beethoven's symphonies that he was initially very reluctant to produce any himself. And his 4th may be my favorite. A special treat if you're a Yes fan - Rick Wakeman's "Cans and Brahms" piece from Fragile is an adaptation of the third movement. :)

From this Silverline Series of Vanguard Quad albums, I have the other two Brahms disc on order and they should be delivered any day now. One has Symphony 1 and Variations on a Theme by Haydn whilst the other has Symphony 4. I'm also expecting the seven Sibelius Symphonies, Rachmaninov Symphony 3 and Mahler's Symphonies 1 to 6.

As for Brahms, I'll eventually tackle his Piano Concertos and Violin Concertos.

I'm really enjoying exploring these amazing recordings and performances. :)

Change of pace with Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection (SACD). What a great album. Good ole country comfort indeed.

I had this on order with the Marillion FEAR SACD, so as I cancelled that, this turned up this morning. I do like Debussy! For such an old recording the clarity is great, as there are only a few instruments its not what you'd call discrete, but its way more than ambience in the rears. It sounds like you sitting just in front of the musicians, maybe even amongst them - granted my seating arrangement is with my chair closer to the rears than the fronts.

I love that longer version of " Madman " with the incredible guitar workout by Mick Ronson. (y)

Additionally love the bonus instrumental he does on Bowie's-Ziggy (dvd).:music

Man, this was a great concert! A little bass heavy but great overall sound, although no real surround discreteness that I noticed. I liked how the first set was solo stuff and the second set was Genesis stuff with quite a few different song choices than the 'Genesis Revisited' show.

Honky Chateau ...first time with full range rears. Seems to have cleared up any mid bass "problems" I was hearing with the EJ SACD releases. Sounds excellent!

Yeahhhh..the brass section in the rears on "Honky cat" is masterstroke!!!

Blood Sweat & Tears - Mirror Image, conversion. Excellent mix!!

I'm continuing my exploration of the Silverline reissues of the Vanguard Records Quad recordings from the 70's with this Rachmaninov Symphony 3 (DualDisc), which I had never heard before. I've had the Symphony 2 for a while now (Edo de Waart - Pentatone Quad SACD) which I like.

This is the original LP sleeve.
