I'm continuing my exploration of the Silverline reissues of the Vanguard Records Quad recordings from the 70's with this Rachmaninov Symphony 3 (DualDisc), which I had never heard before. I've had the Symphony 2 for a while now (Edo de Waart - Pentatone Quad SACD) which I like.

This is the original LP sleeve.

Did they do a lot of Vanguard quads? I was not aware of that. And I thought Silverline were a DVD-A company, not knowing they tried out DualDisc for some releases. You are so far ahead of me.

It is a beaut.. (New City Quad too).. is your Mirror Image from SQ or Q8?

Q8. Very discrete! I believe New City was a 2fer on this conversion, and I split them up. All the BS&T releases were excellent in the origional production, they translate well to any format...

Steely Dan Live FM Quad ...pretty sure Michael McDonald does some backup vocals on this in the rears. Live from the Record Plant in LA...Notch lower in overall sound quality but mix is excellent, especially for live.

edit: bongo's in rears, another no-brainer mixing choice. Do It Again!

FM should sound good, no static at all.. :smokin

They've concentrated on Vanguard's Classical Quad output. Most of these came out on DVD-A but at some point Silverline switched to DualDiscs for the rest of their releases.

Here's what I've found on Amazon so far:

All of these are by Maurice Abravanel & Utah Symphony Orchestra

Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 14 / Chanson Georgienne
(DualDisc)

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake - Grand Ballet in Four Acts, Op 20 (DVD-Audio)

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker (DualDisc)

Mahler: Symphony No. 1, Titan (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Mahler: Symphony No. 3 (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Mahler: Symphony No. 4 in G Major (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Mahler: Symphony No. 5 (DualDisc)

Mahler: Symphony No. 6 (DualDisc)

Hector Berlioz: Requiem (DVD Audio) also available as DualDisc

Brahms: Orchestral Works (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Brahms: Symphonies Nos 2 & 3 (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Brahms: Symphony No 4 / Tragic Overture / Academic Festival Overture (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Sibelius: Symphonies Nos 1 & 4 (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Sibelius: Symphonies Nos 2 & 3 (DVD-Audio)

Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 5, 6, 7
(DVD-Audio)

Fiddle Faddle: 15 Favorites by Leroy Anderson (DVD-Audio) also available as DualDisc

Vaughan William Symphony, No. 6 / Dives & Lazarus / Dona Nobis Pacem (DualDisc)

I hope this helps. :)

Arrived today - Barclay James Harvest - Gone To Earth dvdv. I had this album on record and I honestly haven't listened to it for 20 years. Its bringing back memories! Another excellent Esoteric package, and the surround mix is pretty good. Me and my Friday night Malbec are enjoying this :music

Thanks for posting this, I love JJ Cale's music and I didn't know this existed! So just got the DVD/CD European (Region 2) for a whisker under £10!

This is my first time listening to Mahler's Symphony No. 9. I must admit that I don't like it as much as the others I've heard. Not that it's bad per say but it's not pulling me in like some of the others do.

I wonder why every other Bernstein disc is available individually but for some reason the 6 and the 9 are only sold together. May that symphony isn't as popular as the others. Does anybody know?

I'll admit that my reaction was based on the first and second movements. I like the third and fourth much more.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, Van Cliburn - piano, Symphony of the Air, Kiril Kondrasin - conductor (SACD)

Well technically 3-channel, not surround. Remarkable sound quality for 1958 - the clarity of the audience coughs throughout is most impressive. :)

I had the pleasure of seeing pianist Garrick Ohlsson give a stunning performance of this last night with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I wanted to revisit the piece while it was still fresh on my mind.

I like that disc a lot too. Let's be honest, those RCA SACDs are superb.
