Beck Sea Change, the DVD-A: it was time again, too bad we can't get more Beck in surround, though Guero is a good straight through listen too once I get past E-Pro.

They've concentrated on Vanguard's Classical Quad output. Most of these came out on DVD-A but at some point Silverline switched to DualDiscs for the rest of their releases.

I hope this helps. :)

We need to know if any of these are really true fake quad, as hinted at.

This is my first time listening to Mahler's Symphony No. 9. I must admit that I don't like it as much as the others I've heard. Not that it's bad per say but it's not pulling me in like some of the others do.

I wonder why every other Bernstein disc is available individually but for some reason the 6 and the 9 are only sold together. May that symphony isn't as popular as the others. Does anybody know?

My guess is that Japanese like to model these SACD reissues on the original LPs, with the same program, artwork, etc... I believe these symphonies were released together in a 3-LP set back in the 60s.
I am glad to hear you're enjoying the music more with further listening. :)

For: marpow (Mark) &

A pic of the rockabilly/blues cd/dvd by legendary J.J.CALE.

This disc may still be available, and I most definitely recommend it. (ignore that dts indication, it's DD 5.1 only)

Live in the Studio (79 ), sans audience. :upthumb

WHAT AN AMAZING GUITARIST HE WAS !! :sun

Thanks for the tip, fizzy! I'm definitely interested in becoming more acquainted with his music. Looking forward to these recordings. :brew

Oh I reckon you'll know some of it already, even I know a few of his songs and I'm still in kindergarten with all this stuff compared to folks like Fizzy.. things like After Midnight & Cocaine's been covered by Clapton etc. afaik..

I wonder if Going Down in the setlist on the back of that DVD's the same song Bryan Ferry did on Frantic..?
great track that.. love that album I think I'l give that a spin over le weekend :smokin

Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings
musically I like this one better than "Please Don't Touch", which isn't bad eiter. Surround mix is, as you would expect from Mr Wilson, very good.
Is it just me, or are there really no polls for the Steve Hackett discs?

Me, too. I'll be joining you at the kiddie table, Adam. ;) LOL!
I knew he wrote some of those famous songs and has been influential, but I've only scratched the surface with regards to his recordings. So much great music out there.

Hanson: Symphony No. 1 "Nordic", Symphony No. 2 "Romantic", Song of Democracy

Eastman School of Music Chorus
Eastman-Rochester Orchestra
Howard Hanson (conductor)
(SACD Mercury)

I thought I'd join Simon on this one. :brew

That's quite a nice disc. I'm enjoying discovering these more modern composers like Hanson and Copland.

These days my appetite for modern classical music has become ravenous! :yikes

One composer you might really like is Kurt Atterberg. His music is also in the late Romantic style. Chandos has recently finished their wonderful 5-volume series of his works conducted by Neeme Järvi. 4 of these are Mch SACDs. Alas, his 3rd Symphony was only released on RBCD. (Perhaps there is a Hirez download).

Thanks! :) I actually have a few of these on my wish list.

Mirage - Fleetwood Mac (5.1 from vinyl box set thingy)

First impressions = V. Nice :upthumb

.."all" I need now is a 5.1 remix of Tango In The Night.. and I'll be in FM 5.1 heaven! :D

..as a set of surround mixes I think I like these new Mirage surround tracks as much as the Tusk 5.1 stuff.. and I really enjoyed all that in surround.. there's a slight feeling some songs are "louder" than others, which ever so slightly disrupts the flow of tracks as an album when played as an album in one sitting maybe, if I'm making any sense?

also some tracks are fairly sparse, so its kinda stretching it with rejigging them into surround, I feel, one or two don't really gain a great deal from being in 5.1, though there's still an uptick in general atmosphere etc as you get from all well mixed surround no matter how little's going on musically..

..oh and some tracks (Oh Diane, for example) lead vocals seem a little buried, though they may well not be and that may be a setup thing my end as my rears are too loud these days thanks to untweakable 5.1-setup problems.. yawn.. so don't take that as proof of anything much unless you all start encountering the same thing on your systems..

..the bonus track (Cool Water) is a real demo worthy surround track imho, super immersive and sheer fun, in an almost vintage Quad kinda way.. love it!

..as with the Tusk 5.1's, running a couple of tracks thru Audacity for fits & giggles, the Front channels clip a bit and are a bit louder relative to the others.. but not audibly distorting or anything from what I can gather.. not sure still what that's all about.. some aesthetic thing maybe (to be fair there is more going on in the front L&R than any of the other channels in these mixes, for the most part) or some mastering decision on the part of the engineers behind these Fleetwood Mac 5.1's to give the front channels more punch.. I dunno..?

..mastering wise none of it is loud or bright or any other negative I'd say, if anything it needs a bit of a crank of the master volume my end to really make it come to life.. I've no idea what the menu's and stuff do or even look like btw, as I've just backed this up to my Mac straight away rather than play it as a regular DVD in the disc player and so will play the files from there from now on..

all that said, I do feel a rather generous QQ Poll vote score coming on based on the 5.1 mixes in their own right, they're great..

The Social Network, great stuff. Would be nice when Reznor and Ross release more of their soundtrack work in surround.

Not a threadcrap (or is it technically a "post crap"!? anyway its not that either).. but it would be nice if this surround soundtrack saw a reissue of some kind so plebs like me could afford to buy it without living off bread and water for the next month! :D

It would also be nice if Trent finally got around to RELEASING THE FRAGILE 5.1 HE'S BEEN TEASING FOR YEARS NOW!!!! :howl:howl:flame:nuke(n)
