So, I totally forgot I had this disc.
Genesis - Nursery Cryme

The set I have has not only a DVD-A (or is it DVD-V) and a SACD. Both Multi-channel of course. Wow! I had no idea it had both formats on 2 different discs...how weird...or maybe cool is that?

Now. The DVD is 48/24 DTS, while the SACD is of course DSD lossless.
I cannot tell 1 ounce of difference between the 2 discs. I've ripped both and asked my wife to play 1 or the other...then play the other. I couldn't tell any difference...whatsoever.

So - what gives? Everyone wants to think that lossless is way superior to DTS 48/24...I dunno. AT least on this disc, my ears cannot hear any difference..not one bit. :)

Anyway. Still, I get it. If someone is going to offer a new release...just give us lossless 96/24. I get it, really I do. But in this case, I cannot tell any difference.

I could be wrong , but I'm almost positive that the SACD and the DVD-V (DTS 96/24) have the same cutoff freq : about 22K...that's why you can't tell the difference...I'll have to investigate further into this...

So, you have this as a stand alone disc and not as part of the box?
(I'm a fanboy and have got all of the Genesis boxes)

Great LP, to me that first LP with the "classic lineup" was something else... I remember being overwhelmed with joy when I found a US Buddah Records pressing (yes, they were the ones who got it initially , before Atlantic came along and said "Hands off, it's mine!"), way back in a used record store in Philadelphia in 1984....I forget who I went to see in Philadelphia that time...my Dad worked for Eastern , so I could fly for free...

I have a stand-alone disc. So, if it was never released that way, that means I purchased it from some 3rd party...which of course, I don't remember. Yeah, it's of course possible about the cutoff. Those are things I don't know... :)

It was released as a standalone, and like all the other Genesis 5.1 DVD-video remixes the DTS is 96/24. Your setup might not support the higher res and therefore would drop it down to 48/24, or there might be a setting lurking in some setup menu that's holding you back. As far as whether you'd hear a difference, YMMV.

Thankfully only my dog can hear the ultrasonic noisy non-difference ;)

My setup handles high res of course. :) I guess all I know is when I loaded this into DVD-AE, it only showed me 48/24 as an option, so I assumed the 96/24 didn't exist. Maybe I need to rip it with Audiomuxer to find the 96/24 if you say it exists.

So, I loaded the Nursery Cryme DVD-A into Audiomuxer and yes, it shows DTS 96/24. :) So, I'll rip it this way to ensure I get the best listening experience. (y)

Hugo In Winter Wonder Land! - Hugo Montenegro (Dutton Vocalion SACD)

Lovely renditions of what I suppose were then Stevie Wonder's recent hits and album cuts, now looked upon some 40-odd years later as among his Classic tracks I guess..

..suitably active surround mixes for the uptempo numbers and more restrained but still discrete and immersive surround for the slower stuff.. I can see myself playing this one a lot!

hey DV, can we have the Hugo does Elton Quad on SACD next please?
Rocket Man, burnin out his fuse on Quadraphones..! :D

Stand Up: Elevated Edition - JT

partial to a bit of flute in the elevator?

..lets go living in the past!

i'll get the negative out the way, this isn't as surround-y as I'd like really (maybe my expectations unrealistic with the available multi's? 8 track? i dunno.. maybe I've been listening to too many batty old Quads lately, with their mega discrete-o-matronic mixes!) one or two things kinda lose their impact in that they appear to open up compared to the old mixes but they kinda lose a bit of oomph in a way.. maybe my setup, I need to check it again since moving the room around (again  ) I'll try out a few old faithfuls and see if its that.

on the upside, the sound quality strikes me as really exceptional, its like the band are in the room with you.. something I never got with the old mixes or mastering.. so maybe that's what SW was going for, always got me old chrysalis cd to go back to, though I do prefer to do it all surround-y these days so maybe I'll just get over it and stick with this new DVD.. possibly least excited about this than any of the other Steven Wilson remixed Jehtro Tull, maybe Benefit which I don't remember playing since I got it, the others are all incredible, I'm gonna go back to old faithful next I think (TAAB).. my 1st and still my fave Tull album, a master work.. and in amazing surround sound! wow! :worthy

Its not quite a direct comparison, but the DSD on a SACD works out at about 20-bits lossless (though it does use data compression techniques on the disc to get everything to fit), compared to the 24-bit lossy DTS. Resolution, i.e. the number of bits is more important than sample rate, but the sample rate sets the maximum frequency that can be reproduced. I have always found HDCD which is 20-bits to be an improvement over CDs 16-bits. At the end of the day though, if the original recording isn't 'brilliant' (IMO overuse of compression or clipping) more resolution/higher sample rates or even the lossy/lossless reproduction won't make that much of a difference. But to quote the Doobies "Listen To The Music" :)

I have this disc and it's one of my fave GENESIS discs. I have the U.S. copy which (reminder) is a DVD only disc not DVDA (but oh I wish it was) and it's from the "green 70's" box set with the 70-75 discs. I also have the SACD/DVD Euro edition.

To the best of my knowledge they were both (European U.S.) available as stand alone discs as well as Box sets.

Gotta love "Return Of The Giant Hogweed" from that disc. One of my must play every now again tunes.:upthumb

We will likely never get to listen to their first disc in surround as it's being held .Perhaps for Ransom and by none other than Jonathan King. But it's not a great disc, kinda chamber like music, so it's not much of a loss, everything after is rather what they're famous Prog Rock Geniuses for afterall . ;)

Nursery Cryme is probably my favourite Genesis album, and "Return Of The Giant Hogweed" is my go to track, but I like them all, I do like the vocals on "Harold The Barrel" but I have no desire to serve my toes up for tea!

afaik, Lamb Lies Down and the bonus discs in the 3 (Green,Blue,Red) boxes were the only ones without a standalone release and even Lamb got an SACD+DVD-V standalone mini LP in Japan, iirc?

I have over 300 new mixes done. I have put most on hard drive, so just listening to them now to see if any changes need to be made. Will take a few days at least. I got a couple of Bee Gees songs last night as well, so just done 2 surround mixes! Nice sounding stems.

my dear fizzywizzywoo, the new Stand Up's very very good (don't get me wrong! as Chrissie Hynde would say! :D ) but now I've got Thick As the proverbial SW 5.1 on and really.. well.. I'm not going to even compare, that would be unfair..! :yikes

what's the Bee Gees stuff you've remixed?
I remember quite a bit of the SNF era stuff floating about as stems at one point

Just listened, 461 Ocean Boulevard 5.1 Elliot Scheiner mix, now listening There's One In Every Crowd, 4.0 original Quad mix. Both Blu Ray at DTS-HD 24/96 from the 6 disc set. Eric Clapton Give Me Strength, the 74-75 recordings.
