Opeth - Pale Communion

View attachment 28128

I've just ordered this from burning shed, I got Heritage the other week and have been enjoying that, so I thought I'd find out if there was more like it out there, had a listen to pale Communion on Youtoobe and liked what I was hearing so went looking for a copy some on ebay, then discovered the shed had it cheaper and brand new, so ordered it.

Whilst listening to the album 2nd time round I set out to find out why on burning shed it had said this was the "corrected version" which of course brought me back here to read about the whole sorry saga.

I'm glad I ordered from the shed 'cos if I'd gone for an ebay example i might have ended up with an uncorrected example :yikes

I think I'm gonna like it more than heritage.

Listening to now: Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Blu-ray in DTS-HD MSTR 5.1

Going XMAS all out this weekend,

Mannheim Steamroller, Vince Gauraldi (Charlie Brown Xmas), Charlie Brown's Xmas redone with a variety of Concord jazz artists,

and the rather bizarre Flaming Lips-Christmas On Mars

Whilst the uncorrected disc has the front left and LFE channels out of phase, the 'corrected' disc still has the LFE out of phase. I ripped my 'corrected' disc to flacs then loaded them into Audacity, selected the LFE channel and inverted it to make a truly corrected version. To me, it made the bottom end more cohesive and defined, less muddy, although it does make the kick drum appear a bit more prominent in the mix.

I prefer the fully corrected version, and I assume that this is the way Steven Wilson (who did the surround mix) intended it to sound. Some people actually prefer to have it out of phase as it weakens the power of the kick drum, but I would rather have everything in phase as intended, then turn down the LFE to my tastes, but me being a drummer I think it sounds great with the powerful bottom end.

I think the corrected version is very difficult to listen to. The Kick drum is overwhelming and the bass guitar goes missing. SW tends to mix the kick drum this way. The new Rhapsody Dolby Atmos Blu Ray is the same.

You were the very 'some people' I was referring to. :) I don't have any difficulty listening to it the correct way at all. In fact after critically comparing both versions many times, I much prefer it this way. I just can't imagine that listening to anything that is not properly phase aligned would actually be beneficial in improving the overall sound quality. Yes, the kick drum is very forceful. With most surround albums, depending on how they're mixed, but with most I end up turning my subs up a few dB in my receiver, but on this one I leave it set flat and it's still almost too much, but just almost and I prefer to have really strong deep bottom end, especially on heavier music. As far as the bass guitar level, I agree that it's too low in the mix either way for my tastes, but if anything I think it seems to come through just a bit clearer and smoother overall with the phase corrected.
