Yeah - I meant, when I'm ripping the music from what we typically call a DVD-Audio, sometimes it's really not a DVD-Audio, but a DVD-Video disc (with music). The labels are often not accurate, so I just meant, I don't know what the trick is to know what you "really" have. It doesn't really matter, as long as the damn thing plays correctly - me, along with many others are just a bit OCD about such things. :)

Oh a P.C. type thing, gotcha.:sun

I know ZIP about Ryan Adams. Is he considered country?

oh I dunno.. a bit of rock/pop/alt/indie/country.!? :D

maybe check out his stuff on iTunes or something first before chucking your money at the OOP SACDs/DVD-As?

(fwiw out of the 2 prefer "Gold" musically to his other Surround title "Rock & Roll".. it's great.. it's also a 4.1 mix no Centre channel.. my favourite album of his is "Heartbreaker" there's a Stereo SACD which is pretty decent iirc but not played it for a while, kind of locked in a 70s Quad groove these days donchyaknow! ;) :smokin

Well, it's pretty easy to determine between the two.
If the best audio option available on the disc is MLP, it's a DVD-A/V disc, and if the best audio option is DTS, then it's just DVD-V.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (adam??) Dual Disc DVD-A

Wow, just ripped this one....and the DR is off the charts...even on this dualdisc....so happy to have an excellent version of this classic recording. Miles is absolutely THE MAN! Can't you just picture him in some crusty old jazz bar in Chicago in 1960? I can.... :):)

Thanks for the [inadvertent] tip. Am a huge Mingus fan but apparently never heard of this late period Mingus album from 1973. How does in sound in CD~4? I just ordered the UK Rhino Import RBCD from 1993 which includes two bonus cuts not included on the disc. I figured for 98 cents (used...VG condition) + the requisite s/h I couldn't go wrong.

I'd love to see it reissued as a QUAD SACD........

2017 is rapidly approaching and what better way to bring in the New Year than with Mingus, Mingus, MINGUS. Have a Happy Adam.:friday::party

Is it cosidered a travesty guys that I've never heard if Mingus? Let alone a surround treatment in addition....

I FINALLY finished converting all of my multichannel discs to flac, so right now I'm listening with Kodi's "party mode", which is just a way of saying "random". Simple Minds just finished, and now "Fiddle About" from Tommy is playing.

Converting everything to flac and loading it on a NAS may be one of the coolest things I've ever done!

And now the Eliot Scheiner mix of "Free Bird" is playing.

Nice one Doc. I just bought my Raspberry Pi and burner. As 'The Proclaimers' sing "I'm on my way to misery and happiness..." I hope my conversion path is more happiness than misery however.... Might need some pointers along my path...

I had a good amount of misery, but I suspect not all will find it as challenging as I initially did. All is mostly good now for me. :)

Singles 69-73 : Carpenters

cannot get over how **** the SQ is compared to the CD-4 of this one
(and I think everyone here knows how much I love SQ and hate CD-4! )

My father loved the harmonies on their music, and I got hooked too! Out of curiosity how many songs are common with the SACD release Singles 1969-1981?

Ah but Mr. 'blue. The thing that many people forget with regards to SQ or QS or any other matrix disc for that matter. In 2017 we can purchase the finest SQ decoder we can find, either vintage (Tate II, AS&IC, etc) or modern (Surround Master, SQ super script from OD or others). What we can't do is escape the fact that the SQ LP was created with a early 1970's ENCODER that cannot be upgraded because the encoding is a DONE DEAL.

I would wager that a modern technology SQ Encoder would create something very close to what you get from CD-4 or even quad tape that either the SM or a super script could decode. Trouble is, the source is still the product of an old technology encode - and there's no escaping that.
