Ah but Mr. 'blue. The thing that many people forget with regards to SQ or QS or any other matrix disc for that matter. In 2017 we can purchase the finest SQ decoder we can find, either vintage (Tate II, AS&IC, etc) or modern (Surround Master, SQ super script from OD or others). What we can't do is escape the fact that the SQ LP was created with a early 1970's ENCODER that cannot be upgraded because the encoding is a DONE DEAL.

I would wager that a modern technology SQ Encoder would create something very close to what you get from CD-4 or even quad tape that either the SM or a super script could decode. Trouble is, the source is still the product of an old technology encode - and there's no escaping that.

VERY true. And thankfully, one of Universal's true gifts to us quaddies was the incomparable mch SACD of the Carpenter's Singles which they used to blow out at the old Columbia House Record club for $5.99!

Well, it's pretty easy to determine between the two.
If the best audio option available on the disc is MLP, it's a DVD-A/V disc, and if the best audio option is DTS, then it's just DVD-V.

:)

Huh, how did I miss this post? Really, that's the quick and easy way to tell? That does seem pretty easy. But....I get mixed up then in terms of MLP. Is LPCM and MLP the same thing? I often see LPCM listed (if it's DVD-Audio Extractor). Or maybe I only see that on Blurays? Heck I dunno.....@:

You shouldn't see "LPCM 5.1" on any commercially released DVDs in DVD-Audio Extractor, but you will see it on Blu-Rays.
"MLP 5.1" is almost exclusively used on DVD-A discs as I've never seen it on a single Blu-Ray.

Dolby True HD is actually an implementation of Meridian's MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing).

I know, I know....while this doesn't seem right that GOS would even consider listening to this....I do have morals....oh and culture. :) :smokin

I so want to like classical music...and I've purchased a few discs over time. Here is what I have tonight....and it's tagged correctly thanks to Simon. :yikes

oh I dunno.. a bit of rock/pop/alt/indie/country.!? :D

maybe check out his stuff on iTunes or something first before chucking your money at the OOP SACDs/DVD-As?

(fwiw out of the 2 prefer "Gold" musically to his other Surround title "Rock & Roll".. it's great.. it's also a 4.1 mix no Centre channel.. my favourite album of his is "Heartbreaker" there's a Stereo SACD which is pretty decent iirc but not played it for a while, kind of locked in a 70s Quad groove these days donchyaknow! ;) :smokin

I never purchased his surround sacd's nor latter DVDA'S but now regret it. So he's on my want list.

He does a great job with Cowboy Junkies on their "Trinity Revisited" cd/dvd a 5.1 DD, great mix though.
