Mussorgsky- Pictures At An Exhibition/Night On The Bare Mountain SACD (Pentatone Classics) excellent music throughout this disc; "Pictures" is filled with various themes that should be familiar to everyone... "Promenade" sounds beautifully majestic and discrete in surround. I know "Bare Mountain" from Fantasia. "Dance of the Persian Slave Girls" sounds very familiar... like it may have been used in movies, etc. This music makes me think John Williams was heavily influenced by Mussorgsky, because I can hear similarities throughout! (I love Williams' scores, by the way). In terms of surround, moments of discrete surround here and there with ambiance (maybe more like a wider soundstage) more often... I like it(y)

edit: Just noticed a typo on the SACD spine label: "Moussorgsky"

I have it as well, it is a good one! I'm the same, not a great classical listener and I picked up the composers I liked from the ones my father used to listen to, and I found I liked most of the music of those composers writing post 1850. Try Janacek's Sinfonietta (Fanfare is used on ELPs Knife Edge), I have the SACD https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sinfoniett...&refinements=p_n_binding_browse-bin:382529011 the surround is pretty good quite immersive.

Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique SACD (Pentatone Remastered Classics)... This is so great!!! I'm not a classical music aficionado (my exposure has mainly been through movie soundtracks and Warner Bros cartoons:mad:@:), but this is an excellent disc... track 5 inspired Stanley Kubrick's theme for "The Shining"... discrete sound in the rear channels (NOT ambience)... recommended!

Haven't listened to this in a bit, so last nite I whipped it on and enjoyed both great surround and stellar performance by Lou and Crew.

Lou Reed-Montreaux DVD DTS

15 mins of bliss with this one song "Tatters" with lots of guitar interplay.

Highly recommend this DVD, fwiw. :smokin

My favorite song(which I'm listening to right now) is

I have always wondered how good SILK DEGREES would sound if ES did a surround mix of that album...geeze...I mean LIDO SHUFFLE and LOWDOWN....it would be awesome...when you consider all the competition on the charts in 1976 and SILK DEGREES climbed to the #2 spot..

Standing by my ten on this one and adding a plus, it's outstanding. David Gilmour Rattle That Lock, DTS-HD MA 5.1 96k.

Bach- Brandenburg Concertos SACD (Pentatone Remastered classics) Great variety of Baroque music... I like how each concerto highlights a different type of instrument. Baroque music (especially Bach) tends to all sound somewhat similar to me after a while, but this collection keeps it interesting. Not a surround extravaganza, though... wider soundstage, but no discrete elements in the rear that I can hear. Recommended for content and fidelity, but not for surround.

Vivaldi- The Four Seasons SACD (Dutton Epoch)- Classic soundtrack for Grey Poupon and Luxury Cars. Violins/strings throughout. Really enjoyable. I love Vivaldi, although for me most of the songs are somewhat interchangeable (but all good!) THIS version has a great surround field with lots of discrete rear activity... and who doesn't like discrete rear activity?! Highly recommended for surround/ casual classical fans.(y)(y)

Except for the Boston DG recordings and a few others, a lot of Pentatone quad SACD have been a bit of a letdown with the very conservative mixing, including this one. Compare it to the Columbia/RCA recordings like the Vivaldi and it's a different listening experience.

Do you have any recommendations for surround mixes as good as the Vivaldi?

Vivaldi - La Stravaganza (Rachel Podger) SACD - So... this is ranked pretty high in the surround polls... that's why I bought it when I first discovered the QQ; great music & performance; wonderful fidelity, but I'm not sure what others are hearing in terms of surround mix... pure ambiance to my ears. If you're looking for Vivaldi in surround, get The Four Seasons SACD on Dutton Epoch... much better surround experience, IMO:)

You've got me intrigued with your description of the Dutton title. It's now on my to-buy list.

Agreed that La Stravaganza is not very discrete. Is is though, to my ears, the most engaging, high fidelity, "live-sounding" classical title I've heard. In truth the performance and recording are so good I'll take it any way I can :)

This is often a quandary for me...do I want a mix to sound "real", or discrete? Both are attractive in the right musical scenario.
