I just had to join ya on the threshold... :teleport:

These will be your first Moody Blues SACDs but is this the first time you will own their music or are you discovering them?

I think you may get hooked just like I did after hearing how well done those Quad mixes are. I confess listening to at least one album in Quad every day. I appreciate them even more with each play. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on those after you've heard them.

I have these two blu ray concerts, but this will be my first go with SACDs, very much looking forward to them. I chose these two to start because of the price and MC mixes. I'll drop a note after I spin them next week ;)

View attachment 20529Insurgentes: Boy did I get the speaker placement right today, simply chilling.
Oh, I love that post. Speaker placement, I'm sure, causes more consternation amongst surround-aholics than any other aspect of multichannel system configuration. Trying to manage 5 speakers (plus a sub) always seems to be something that I continually diagnose.

The "Live in Munich" Bluray sounds like a rockin concert. How are the surrounds?
Is there anything discrete going on in the rear channels?

And/or... How is the overall surround image?

I'd be a player if the soundstage is natural and at least somewhat immersive.

Well, unfortunately , the ONLY REAL Surround mix in their catalog is the (SPECTACULAR MIX) "Network" DVD-V ...Audio only...

Audio wise...This is the typical ambience and crowd in the back,
BUT
if you play it back in stereo , it decodes VERY NICELY (almost discrete) in DPL II or NEO.
The sound quality is SUPERB and the picture quality is VERY GOOD (not grainy).
EXCELLENT performance...

If you like it, get this, it IS worth it...if you don't like it, I'll buy it from you! ;)

EDIT(CAVEAT EMPTOR!!! There are 2 different "live in Munich" DVDs, the one I'm referring to is the "Spin it again!" one ..the last one....although I don't know if the 1st one , "Contact" was ever released in BD)

I was lucky to catch SAGA many times in the bars of Ottawa in the 70s. They were killer musicians and on the technological edges with their gear. I'd buy any of their albums with a quality surround mix.

Lynn and I were listening/watching the Queen Greatest Video Hits double-dvd collection today and found the DTS 5.1 mixes shiny and fun!@:

Good to hear! I was hesitant to get that one.

Currently playing my first Elton John SACD in Multichannel. Bloody Hell those mixes are tremendous! I thought the banjo was going to poke my eye out in the first song it was so close and "there"!@:

Dear Ken Scott,

Please get working on Multichannel mixes of two of your best productions, Hunky Dory and Crime Of The Century asap. I need to hear them real soon and I know I'm not the only one feeling like this. Thank you!

Here's more thumb porn for Linda... ;)

Honky Chateau is amazing on several levels...as good as it sounds and I love the content it amazes me that this disc has been around for 11 years and it's still available for a cheap price...you would have thought the supply would have been exhausted by now..but it lives on..Here

Love Rocket Man...sounds so good and I've always liked Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters....glad you are enjoying it:)

One last one as I get ready for a well deserved sleep.

This one is for relaxation or a rainy day and sounds absolutely superb. I've always had a soft spot for well played Harp and Lavinia Meijer is one of the best.

Just in case you're not aware, Ken Scott had nothing to do with the surround mix of this album. It's all Greg Penny, and he did as masterful a job on this record as he did on the other 5 (technically 9) that he remixed for Elton.
Plus, I love Ken Scott. I even had a chance to meet him last year when he came to give a guest lecture at MTSU on Recording the Beatles (he even signed my book for me!) but despite all of the great things he's done in the world of music production, he is NOT good at surround sound mixing.
Take a listen to his surround mix of "Ziggy Stardust", and you'll see what I mean.
Finally, neither one of the albums you mentioned will probably be getting a surround release anytime soon since "Crime of the Century" was just the subject of a big reissue last year, and "Hunky Dory" is part of the new "Five Years" box set from Bowie out in September.

So, now that I've said all that, get back to "Honky Chateau"! :)

I must admit that I did get it just for Rocket Man (or Rock-It Man as William Shatner sings it), but I've actually enjoyed a handful of tracks that used to leave me a tad lukewarm before. Cannot wait to hear Madman...
