Just in case you're not aware, Ken Scott had nothing to do with the surround mix of this album. It's all Greg Penny, and he did as masterful a job on this record as he did on the other 5 (technically 9) that he remixed for Elton.
Plus, I love Ken Scott. I even had a chance to meet him last year when he came to give a guest lecture at MTSU on Recording the Beatles (he even signed my book for me!) but despite all of the great things he's done in the world of music production, he is NOT good at surround sound mixing.
Take a listen to his surround mix of "Ziggy Stardust", and you'll see what I mean.
Finally, neither one of the albums you mentioned will probably be getting a surround release anytime soon since "Crime of the Century" was just the subject of a big reissue last year, and "Hunky Dory" is part of the new "Five Years" box set from Bowie out in September.

So, now that I've said all that, get back to "Honky Chateau"! :)

I sit corrected. I knew he had not mixed them but since his engineering job on those was so amazing, I thought he could have done a good job in Surround. You're too right about Ziggy's mix. As for the two getting a Multichannel release, it was mostly dreaming aloud on my part... ;)

Simon, could you give the product code off of that? Thanks -

Also Simon... Is there a surround mix on this album?

Yes, but don't expect anything crazy here. The point about the Surround is simply to envelop the listener with the beautiful music to recreate the hall/room where the album was recorded. I'll be playing this one very often. I had come home last night from a twelve hour day (the first of many in the weeks to come) and this was the perfect antidote. This is an album I may buy a few copies of just to give to friends. Should any of you buy it, please let me know what you think.

I had not heard the original versions of these Philip Glass piano pieces before, so I did not have any preconceptions of how the music should sound. To be honest, the first time I heard it, I was really moved, and this was just by hearing the samples on iTunes. From reading other online reviews, it looks like I may not be alone. I'm still curious to know what those of you who buy it think of the music.

Glass: Metamorphosis, The Hours - Lavinia Meijer

I thought I'd join you. Hope I'm not too late. ;)

Simon's review is spot on. The catalog number is CCS SA 33912...just in case.

Tell me Lute, have heard her other SACDs? If so, are they as exquisite?

Now Listening to "Nonsuch" in surround, DVD-A version that is.
Those DVD-A versions of "Nonsuch" and "Drums & Wires" might become more valuable now if those will be the only DVD-As for the continuing XTC Surround Sound Series.

Unwrapped Insurgentes by Steven Wilson... Well, this is the first SW music I've tried that didn't grab me right away. Really industrial, distorted sort of sound. So than I opened Nonsuch by XTC... WOW! Now we're talking... My first XTC experience and I'm loving it... Now the mood is right:music

Yes, Nonsuch is perfect pop music. Well of course there's the Beatles but nevertheless...Nonsuch shines as well.

Until we get Rubber Soul and Abbey Road in surround, everything else is a poor substitute (the surround mixes I ripped from The Beatles movies and The Anthology are great, but I really want to hear the original albums... And while Love is a really cool experiment, I usually only get about half way through before I put on a real Beatles album!)

XTC "Drums & Wires" DVDA

I have particularly memories attached to this disc and hearing it for the first time.
Still one of my favorite Steven Wilson surround mixes to this day! :)

Now it's time for "Discipline"!
Thank goodness we didn't have to wait nearly as long for this one to come out in surround as we are having to still wait for "Beat" and "Three of a Perfect Pair"...

Hi everyone!

Just finished a 67 hour week so I haven't been here these last days. I'll get around answering PMs tomorrow so my apologies for making anyone wait.

Just got home to 4 discs, including this one, which sounds absolutely bloody amazing! It does sound like the orchestra is here but luckily for me, it's just a very pleasant illusion which means I won't have to hide my Vodka bottles, those lads can't get to them... ;)

I'm hooked to that Mercury Living Presence sound. Wow! Thanks again Lute for another superb recommendation!

I've been wanting to hear this one for a long time and finally I get to savour every second of it.

A good Friday evening to everyone with their ears on :) I have 3 albums for my listening pleasure tonight. Close To The Edge blu ray 5.1, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road SACD 5.1 and (sorry, breaking protocol for this last one in stereo) Black Sabbath SHM-SACD. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

After watching The Who Quadrophenia film for the first time was inspired to listen to Tommy on my drive to work past 2 days. What a awesome album to listen to in 5.1 and the bonus extra tracks on disk 2 have a bit of fun/sillyness factor to them and not bad listen either.
