Q8 or CD-4 source?

I agree the quad mix is great, but I can't seem to find any good sounding version of it. My CD-4 is noisy (I've heard most copies are) and the Q8 conversion I've got is really dull and hissy. The On The Border CD-4 is slightly better but still not great, and the orange Q8 cart is pretty atrocious sonically. I've heard the purple Q8 carts have much better fidelity, but are really expensive.

Those two really need to be reissued, along with the unreleased quads of the first two albums. I was hoping we'd start seeing Eagles box sets every year after the Hotel California box in 2017, but it hasn't happened yet

i honestly don't think the On The Border Quad is ever gonna sound that spectacular, many times with this old Quad stuff at least one version by somebody somewhere hints at what might be trapped on those master tapes but i've never heard it sound any good. the Q8 and CD-4 i have of it are among the worst examples of Q8 and CD-4 technology i've encountered, the tape is absolutely awful and the disc atrocious and both are in excellent condition, in fact my Q8 was brand new when i got it.

i have higher hopes for OOTN if the Quad master tapes survive because several versions i've heard hint at a nice sounding Quad, even my own limited attempts at getting something out of the Q8 & CD-4 are decent, despite a crackly CD-4 pressing and a dull Q8, the CD-4 has sparkle and lots of detail and is still very listenable despite the vinyl flaws and the Q8 just needs a good crank and it comes to life a bit, with some EQ and NR on my Q8 and some click repair etc on my CD-4 they could be perfectly serviceable in the absence of it ever seeing release but tbh i can't be bothered with all that fannying about there's so much good stuff out at the moment (ok its not The Eagles but we have had Poco! ) that i really don't care! if/when the flow of new releases stops i might get back into the whole old quad record/tape thing but it doesn't feel like that'll be necessary anytime soon. fingers crossed for a good outcome for us all, including those who crave the Eagles Quads in master tape quality.

My Easy listening fix for the day: Hangin' Out w/Henry Mancini and Theme from Z:

WOW, that these 70's QUAD RCA masters sound so great after almost 50 years of 'incarceration' is amazing. As Adam surmised: a rousing remarkably vibrant "Loves Theme" and "The Stripper" on the same disc is awesome.

Yep, Hank could swing with the best of 'em...........and write enduring classics like "Moon River...." What a guy!

sexyyyyyy... everything about that disc is so sexyyyyyyyyy... (it really hits my spot! oh yeah!)

it really is superb. i could never find the Q8 back when i was buying old Quad tapes, its appeared on eBay since but i'm out of the game now.. still the ol' Quad LP decodes really well thru the Surround Master, easily one of my most played QS rekkids!
