Listening to Now (In Surround) - Volume 2

Obviously there are a lot of high-profile releases garnering all the attention these days, but one of my favorite new releases has largely flown under the radar: a 2-CD/1-BDA set of Serge Gainsbourg's trippy L’homme à tête de chou, which can be had for under 30 bucks (US) from Amazon or jpc.de. (It came out at the end of June.)

Poussin, who has mixed pretty much the entire Gainsbourg catalogue in Atmos for Apple and Tidal (and who did the SACD and Blu-Ray for Histoire de Melody Nelson a few years back), was asked by Universal France to undertake a new, more adventurous Atmos mix for this set. He succeeded handsomely, IMO. The original streaming mix from 2021 is fine, too, though it intentionally hews close to the bone-dry, voice-forward stereo mix in its overall "feel." Histoire de Melody Nelson is one of Matt Berry's Baker's Dozen for The Quietus.

Cheap Thrills-5.1 SACD Sony Legacy 2002.
This has the Previously Unreleased 4 bonus tracks, which two are actually recorded live at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.
I had this my whole life and I remember how shocked I was to find out it was a studio album with dubbed audience and Bill Graham.
The 5.1 is pleasant.
There is a very good stereo MOFI also.

QS mix on CD. Feels like the front and rear channels are swapped in the quad. 180° channel rotation DSP makes the album sound absolutely brilliant.
