Honestly, I can't understand this policy. I don't own a turntable because I own a blu ray player. Before that I didn't own a turntable because I had a universal dvd-player. Before that I didn't own a turntable because - you see the pattern?
So why should I spend so much money (excuse me, probably I could afford it, but ~130 Euro? For one disc? Never!) for records I can't play at all? I am wondering why the music industry did develop new technic when they obviously don't want us to buy the products to use it.

Yes, but he also said a similar thing in 2011. :(

there has been a lot of rumors of the wall coming out in 5.1. if i remmeber correctly james guthrie was supposed to do a 5.1 version of the wall when the immersion bex sets came out. but to to constraints (Probably his scheduling and the bands scheduling) he was not able to do that version in time for the immersion set release. he commented that it is on his "to do" list. so hopefully in the near future (see article below).

personally waiting for animals in 5.1.

And here is a more technical reason of why it is taking so long:

Is Pink Floyd's The Wall Immersion edition going to have a 5.1 Surround Mix?

James: My understanding is that EMI plan to stick to their release schedule for the 'Why Pink Floyd?' campaign, which means there wouldn't be time to include a 5.1 mix in 'The Wall' Immersion Box. I will be doing a 5.1 mix of The Wall for release on SACD, but we don't have a planned release date for that yet. The original multitrack tapes are in pretty bad shape, so the project will take some time. I'm currently working on a Blu-ray release of 'The Wall' Movie.

By "the original multitrack tapes being in pretty bad shape" - are you referring to the Ampex (or other brand) reel tapes manufactured post 1978 that can gum up tape machines and shed magnetic oxide?

James: Yes. Half-way (ish) through the 70s, and unbeknownst to all of us in the studio world, the tape manufacturers changed the formula of the glue that bonds the oxide to the backing of the tape. I'm told that the original glue contained whale oil, so they had to change to a synthetic oil and that synthetic oil unfortunately causes the glue to break down over time, producing a gummy substance that seeps through the oxide making the tapes unplayable. Fortunately, a bright spark bravely discovered that you could bake the tapes and then safely play them a few times. But, that's not the only challenge when it comes to restoration - Edits, or tape splices, and the breakdown of the glue in the splicing tape that holds those edits together, have caused huge problems. I made hundreds of edits on both the 2" and the ¼” tapes of 'The Wall', so you start to get an idea of how time-consuming the restoration can be.
Additionally, there was a manufacturing period of 2 or 3 years where the tapes were particularly unstable. Of course, they appeared fine at the time. Both 'The Wall' and 'The Final Cut' albums are recorded on the peak of that bad tape.

Are any other Floyd multitrack tapes, in your experience, suffering from this particular problem?

James: Everything after 1976 or 1977 is susceptible to the problem. Even the tape we are using now. And it's not just the multitrack tapes that are affected – the ¼” and ½” masters are in the same predicament.

Yes, it was probably AMPEX tapes they were using - a pro standard at the time. I've just obtained a food dehidrator with trays which fit 12" tape reels and my next winter project (when the air is less humid) is to try and "bake" my tapes from the late 70s and the 80s and make a transfer. You have to keep them at a very stable temperature (I have notes on the actual suggested temperature target elsewhere) for 24 hours then immediately make your transfer after they cool before the humidity starts to build up again. A friend of mine actually baked some of his in a gas oven and though some started smoking, was able to make a transfer!

So we likely will not see a Final Cut remix and Animals may be in very bad shape also. That is unfortunate.
I would think they would've made safety copies of the tapes without the splicing tape which could lessen the task if the masters are unfixable.

Uggggggggggh I go to order - the dvd is 9.99 pounds but the only delivery option to the USA is courier and that is 19.18 pounds..........double the disc :yikes

total price is 48.73 US Dollars

2/3rds of that is shipping. Yes Snood wants, but will wait til Amazon lists it! Which I hope they do

NEVERMIND - Change your country to USA at top - Shipping changes to 3.99 - cost of disc is 14.99

Switch to U.S. dollars and you should be down to $14.99 + $3.99 shipping + tax.

Thanks just figured it out and posted right before I saw your post - Thank You Doh!

Ordered and Thank You - Made my day \o/

This is awesome that you can order seperately, hopefully they do a seperate bluray as well.
Anyone know if this is a Dvd Audio, wonder who we can check with to find that out?

peter

Given Pink Floyd's track record I expect it will be a DVD-V with Dolby Digital at 441K and 640K. (n)

Where's the standalone blu-ray?

Animals was recorded in 1976. The tapes are just fine: Guthrie stated that The Wall and The Final Cut were the albums he was concerned with.

I'm tempted to buy that dvd-v stand alone. I wish it was the blu ray as well, and would hate to order this and have a blu ray pop up sometime soon. I'm not sure what to do now...

I'm in for the 5.1 DVD.
It will probably be DVD-V.
I doubt it will be DVD-A.
Maybe it will be DVD-V/A?
I hope it has at least DTS
24/96 would be a bonus
But it's only DD you say?
Will do until the BD one day.

(Don't shoot me. I'm an engineer not a poet) :)

HAS ANYBODY TRIED TO PRE ORDER THROUGH THE OFFICIAL PINK FLOYD SITE ?
