Ok I dug around & apparently this was widely bootlegged for years. Well now it's been officially released, sourced from the original tapes & mastered by Bernie Grundman. It sounds great!

There is some noise from Neil's bracelet or something hitting the guitar on track 1, but otherwise it's clean and a window back in time to Dec 4 1970.

( edit: widedly?? Thats not a word )

Oh check this out, from his site:

" This recording was made from the show on December 4th 1970 and it was the first time Neil ever walked onstage at Carnegie Hall. There were two shows at Carnegie Hall, one on the 4th and one followed at Midnight the next morning. No bootleggers ever captured this first show, and it was, by far, a much superior show according to NY."

Right!? I was really taken aback by that final sentence! We can only imagine what that first show was like! Also, makes me ultimately not want to buy the record, given Young's assessment of the performance! But as i said, he has NEVER disappointed me when i've seen him live. How do you rate the show?

Oh, this *IS* the first show!! So it's the one he's talking about. Get it!! It's a raw live performance, and the audience hadn't heard a lot of the songs yet.

Neil Young with just an acoustic guitar is mesmerizing onstage. Especially from that era. I wish he would do more interesting acoustic work these days: back then he used various tunings & the parts were more intricate too. Nowadays he mostly strums chords.

That said, a few years back I saw his live acoustic set ( with Diana Krall opening ) and he can still play like that, if he wants to!

What's kind of interesting about the back cover is the embossed YES logo at the, always wonder
if the band approved that  BTW the OG UK has Tom Pick but not the copy right date
I believe they all took a break to do solo albums, and most of them guest on each other's tracks. So I think it was all amiable, and approved.

It probably gave them enough clout to even do it, with the label support?

Another thing: the piano sounds fantastic on this recording too. I believe Neil had it in his tour rider to get a Steinway supplied for his gigs. Which might explain it? It sure sounds better than all the electric/sampled piano on most modern live shows & recordings.

Plus, it's Carnegie Hall. Great acoustics!

You had me at "this *IS* the first show!!" But now ima need to raise a little cash and make some room in my April shopping cart! Thanks for the posts! It's good to see your original post back up there. Young's site may be deluged with requests for this release thanks to YOU! Spin On, Comrade!

Got a pretty handsome sale on Discogs...the buyer has really good taste, my guess is that it's a classical musician...playing the only of the three I had not play graded---I ALWAYS like to play them before shipping them in case there is something wrong..thank goodness I always downgrade my stuff by one degree..this is a pretty solid VG+, and , for a sixty year old slab it's really nice!
