My apologies Dr. Simple, I missed your review...thank you!👍
I hadn't visited this thread in some time. When the Mission arrived, in my haste I jumped to the last page and missed your post entirely. (note to self -- read before spouting off:rolleyes:)

No worries. Like I said: I liked GOS’s reviews better!

I didn’t want to Post about this album again in the Listening to Now (Volume 2) Thread but I have to say, a couple of so-so songs in the beginning (1 and 3) and this album really picks up! I’m impressed. I really need to play this one a couple more times over the weekend before I vote. Though, I still don’t like the drums in every speaker but the mixer is being quite adventurous.

Of course I have the tv off. I keep wondering why the keep playing Khedive over and over....LOL

GOS - I used MakeMKV to do a full backup of the disc and then ripped to flac using DVDAE. I didn’t use Audiomuxer at all.
I didn't try the full backup.....so you somehow use the MKV backup in conjunction with DVDAE? Mine is still misbehaving this morning. No matter what I do....it goes wacky. This morning, it won't even rip anything....just bizarre. I must have other issues....and who knows what they are....

Yes. Here's the step-by-step:
First, to be clear, I'm using DVD Audio Extractor. There's something else, I'm told, called "DVD Audio Explorer", but that's not what I'm using.
1. In DVDAE, in the "DVD source:" drop-down, select "Folder - Open DVD files from file folder..."
2. Click on the box immediately to the right of the drop-down box.
3. Select the "STYX_THE_MISSION" folder, and don't bother selecting a sub directory.
From there I believe it is self-explanatory. Well, not actually: there are two titles that both appear to be identical, titles 8 and 12 are both the same (I believe). Someone who knows more about authoring would know better than me, but I suspect that maybe they made two stream to accompany the with and without visualizations playback methods. Heck - I really don't know!

I think I may have figured something out.....which is honestly not what I wanted to read....in MKV, I was just getting error messages...now I read this...

IT WORKED! LMAO... :SB

I know you will all rest easy knowing GOS 3.0 is happy......

After all those error messages in MKV.....and word of failing blu-ray drive.....I dug back into my OPPO 103 memory banks......OPPO support told me to try cleaning the lens with rum...I mean rubbing alcohol....

So, I open the blu-ray drive and clean the lens carefully, drop The Mission back in....open up DVDAE and it ripped just perfectly.....

:dance

Luv's random thoughts...

I mentioned elsewhere that Ive had the CD since its original release. At that time there was already a rumor that the band was hoping for a 5.1 release. I think the idea that they put together a science fiction based concept album lent itself well to the idea of sound effects that just begged for a 5.1 presentation. I'm very happy that it even got accomplished at all not to mention that the result seems so successful based on the early returns.

My copy of this is on the way from the Moose so I haven't heard it yet. Its great to get all these previews.

Regarding the performance itself, like I've said already, its the best thing to come from Styx since DeYoung left, but not as good as any of those releases with DeYoung in the band, IMO. I may be biased however. As most of the Styx material I like is the DeYoung stuff as well. I find it odd that Gowan's vocals are in limited supply on this disk. I find it odd that this release is the largest success the band has had since DeYoungs departure, and its a concept album, arguably a rock opera even... the same type of thing they didn't like about DeYoungs contributions. Shaw and Young were always in favor of the strait ahead rock tunes.

The descriptions of the mix being "very immersive but with discrete elements" makes me think of the 5.1 mixes of "Amused to Death" and "Misplaced Childhood". I hope it sounds more like the latter (which I like very much).

I so appreciate the sacrifices made by Mr Baggins. If I could send a 5.1 experience to you , I would.

Excellent. For a minute there I thought we were gonna be in for a long, long day.

First of all let me give you props for joining the 3rd party posting brigade...LUV'S random thoughts is a nice touch...usually it's G(Gos)posting to himself...and of course my vote for the best third party post of all time...edisonbaggins posting to Mike Vieira ...now that is classic....I would like to add some opposing views to your observations about DeYoung..

You are being honest with your admission of bias toward DeYoung...and you certainly aren't the only one who has thought the same thing... but I'm not one of them....although doing these concept albums work sometimes... sometimes when they sell lots of records...they fail...Kilroy did achieve platinum status..but the band lost a lot of money due to DeYoung's insistence on having these elaborate stage shows...and they lost a lot of their fan base and most importantly...DeYoung insisted on firing the manager that had paved the way for their success...but it was much more than the difference in styles...DeYoung refused to tour...and touring was needed to promote the music they had just worked on...

Fans always want these "classic" lineups to stay intact...regardless of how toxic the atmosphere becomes within the band...the most common was the Roger Waters/Pink Floyd combination...these bands are so different that your average work environment...you don't just show up on the night of a concert...play the music...and go home...you live together on the road...practice in the studio...the time you spend together is almost 24/7...so putting up with someone that is the polar opposite is difficult to sustain...it's a unique situation...that's why you see some much turnover in bands...longevity is rare in the music business...

I think if DeYoung would have been more flexible and not insisting on everything being a concept album...they might have survived...and in the recent interview I saw with Dan Rather.. the members of Styx said that if they would have taken some time away from each other...especially away from DeYoung...maybe they could have extended their relationship...but they are all in agreement that they don't ever want to work with him again....and just like Fleetwood Mac needing to tour and Lindsey not wanting to..something has to give...so Lindsey was gone...

Gah! Baggy nothing compared to Master Snood!

This release just got some serious bashing in Amazon's customer reviews section.
My copy is on the way (fingers crossed for Monday!), but without all the QQ feedback, I'd probably cancel my order straight away reading this:

There is a saying 'Styx and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt yee'.
I'm very pleased to report that I'm not in pain.
As I've been surrounded by words., coupled with a fantastic, drivin, rockin rhythm.
It's just a total, pure and simple pleasure, that I've received to my lugholes.
I want to play it again and again.
And I am.
Don't do that to many records.
Favourite track, so far, is Red Storm.
One little boy got his sweet shop treat!!
Nuff said really.
