I don't think the BBC generally produced matrix encoded masters, I think they only encoded at the point of transmission. The reason being that they didn't want to lock particular versions of the fast evolving Matrix H into recordings but could use whatever was the best variant available at the time of the broadcast.

Your likely correct @Soundfield. But I think perhaps a small number of BBC Concert Quads in H/HJ do exist.
Surely they have some of those encoded tapes in their own Tape Vault ?

Maybe it's time UMG, ....Island/Rocket/Universal, issued a Big complete box of Elton John's completed 5.1 surround recordings by Greg Penny . And if not on SACD's then on Blu-ray discs.

we know Greg Penny has been trying to get his EJ Surround mixes released in some form over the years without joy.. maybe Atmos is our best hope at this point, since he is heavily involved in that?

or maybe the gentleman who largely curated Elton's "Jewel Box" of B-Sides and Unreleased tracks (who recently joined the Hoffman Forum and afaik is a big fan of the 5.1's) is working on something and its only a matter of when, not if!?

keeping all my Pinkies crossed!! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞❗

"Pinky's as perfect as the 4th of July,
Quilted and timeless, Seldom denied,
The trial and the error of my masterplan,
Now she rolls like the dice in a poor gambler's hand..."

I have a quad BBC vinyl record that is definitely surround, as my friend with all the right equipment un-encoded and burned me a multichannel DVD.

Anything's possible I guess. But even if such things exist they will not be discovered unless someone in the BBC happens to be specifically researching material for a programme and stumbles across them and thinks them of sufficient interest to actually use. Compound unlikelihood I'd say.

Hi Freddums ol sock 👋

Maybe , but I don't know about some of those members of SHF , regarding surround releases.
To many there it's like a bad religion .
For some it goes something like this :

"Mark my words! Surround is the work of the Devil !!" 👿

And in Atmos may not be such a good idea if it should go that way. That means remixes , and that could be costly.
Not to mention delays .

But you just never know , maybe that's an overall likelihood.

In case you still have doubts but well justified given the timeframe.
I know of 2 that did occur and Both Prog Rock/ Rock releases FWIW.

Gentle Giant -" GG AT THE GG", BBC "Sight And Sound" in BBC Matrix HJ CD/DVD . This set contains the January 21,1978 Concert , released on the Alucard label.
also ;
The Jack Bruce Band - "Spirit" on Polydor Records.
Recordings Live At The BBC. One disc has a live Concert in either BBC Matrix H quad (or SQ ). Contains the April 30th 1977 recording.

Aside from that there are a few SQ encoded CD's that retained their quad matrix encoding from the
BBC Transcription Services.

Elton is the reason why you dont have the rest of his early catalog in Quad. Audio Fidelity was in negotiations to do them BUT Elton wanted his entire Pre-Geffen work put out by AF. Marshall passed on that offer and the rest is history. This comes directly from Marshall's mouth....not speculation.

Are you saying AF SACD's in Quad 4.0 .......or the 5.1 surrounds by Greg Penny ?

I thought we'd put a few of those to bed already? Someone in the know confirmed to us that "Brothers and Sisters" was never done OR, at least is not in the vaults and there is no entry for such album. And I thought Mark Linett confirmed that the Beach Boys 20 Great/Good Vibes was never even attempted? Something about once they learned that most of the Beach Boys multitracks (8-track most of them) were generally 1 or 2 tracks of instruments and 6 or 7 tracks worth of vocals?

Three Dog Night "Dog Style" is erroneous and no such album even exists. "Dog Style" was the working title for "Coming Down Your Way".
Janis Joplin in Concert?? First I've heard of that! Maybe???? It would've been smack in the middle of the short 31xxx series of Quad releases. But the multi's would be either 4 or 8-track at best.... most of the performances on that album are from 1968, 1969 and 1970.

Man, some of those are news to me! Not saying they don't exist. I've found LOTS of albums mentioned in passing in old magazines that never came out.

Yeah sorry about that Three Dog Night "Dog Style" title . I was not aware that it was the working title for "Coming Down Your Way".
But I know now , so thankyou.

Now the "Janis Joplin - Live In Concert" quad listing is from the :
... Greatest Quits Thread .
Guess what , not the first you ever heard about it .
Sorry Q-Eight , but you acknowledged this release in Steely's post #38 , (in the same thread on April 05th.)
I suppose were all getting old and have some memory problems.

The Columbia Records Quad Release listing is provided by @vinylguy4 (post #18)
It's a very revelelatory quad information article on what may exist in the Columbia/Sony Vaults.

I learn something new everyday on QQ .
Case in point ;

I absolutely missed the mention of that Byrds Fifth Dimension SACD by AF and that it was a 4.0 release
yet to come !! .
Shocked and surprised describes best my reaction to the belated (for me)information .

Initially, the same "Dog Style: Their Greatest Hits" was being plugged as a title for just such an album by Three Dog Night, and had been originally the CQD-40015 planned release. Or, at least, according to one catalog of current and upcoming quad releases; I can't remember which one. In any event, it never materialized.

The 4.0 mention in that description for the cancelled Byrds AF SACD could easily be a mistake--it seems more likely to me that it was the completed-but-unreleased Thom Cadley 5.1 mix from 2003.

Ok S J , but FWIW you should have mentioned this sooner.
Like in your post #28 in the thread regarding " SRV & BYRDS To Be Hybrid " where you have it clearly stating 4.0 !

But If we had it or were getting it we would know for certain .

The few Matrix H/HJ off-air recording I have, I have a couple were from the 2nd broadcasting, Be Bop Deluxe is one, first time it was aired I heard it in the car as my father was taking me to Uni for the first time, so even then in '76 I dreamed of Quad!
