Who knows he didn't say. But it's kind of hard for me to believe that Bob Clearmountain's mastering would be that radically skewed depending on format or number of channels.
I happy that there's a least one dissenting opinion although I have no doubt that many will not be happy with the SQ of this set.
Just look at the vilification of Pepper & Giles Martin and even more so for 1.
Personally I think it has as much to do with shitty systems and set ups as not understanding the process and being ignorantly\overly critical.

Ok first...Clearmountain did the mix...not the mastering...that was Ludwig...but yes there will be complainers...there always is...but as long as I'm happy...that is all that maters to me:D

AMEN. I actually had a jerk off on Hoffman PM me this morning, in the most obvious use of passive / aggressive I've likely ever seen in writing, how I really have no business giving a SQ review due to the price of my turntable. Then went even further, advising me how I should "tell the others" of my "situation." As if they don't have enough common sense to look at my profile themselves, should they so choose.
I promptly reported him to an Admin., should a blood bath break out.

Just don't get all whopper jawed:oops:

Or chicken tendered!

I've been a member over there for 4 years...and never made a post...it's not as bad as it used to be...there are people like that everywhere...even here...the difference is that other members here will usually police the activity before it escalates

A phrase my father used comes to mind about that individual "They are obviously somebody who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing!"

One of my favorite Oscar Wilde statements about cynics...your Dad was a smart man(y)
Its funny I was talking to my friend/neighbour the other day, about another friend (and a great guitarist) who has just died leaving a widow and two teenage sons, and remarking on the point sometime after your father has died when you realise (a) he knew what he was talking about and (b) he knew more than you

Mine has just arrived from Badlands.co.uk! Not with the Pink Vinyl though.

The CD & BDA are inserted in the cardboard sleeve so not ideal. The inside of the sleeve shows the Tape Boxes, and some are 4 track and some are 8 track, it looks like "I shall Be Released" is made from bounced down tracks to fit on a 4 track (i.e. Bass & Guitar on 1), copied across to an 8 track machine and then vocals added on an additional 3 tracks.

Now I need to find time to listen to what Bob Clearmountain managed to do (and to listen to the others albums in the pile!)

Curiosity got the better of me, and I gave it a listen. Well all the 17 tracks on the BD-A (11 original, 3 Outtakes & 3 Alternate versions) are in surround at 24-bit/96kHz, Selecting 2.0, 5.1 DTS-HDA & 5.1 DD-HD as a Pure Audio disc. Its sounds like it has been cleaned up compared to the DVD-A (which I haven't listened to in a while). The surround is basically fronts & centre with instruments appearing in the rears as they come in on a lot of tracks (the 4 track only ones I suspect), a couple are more immersive (so the 8 track ones I think), I feel the The Weight is very centre centric.

Its not an 'oh wow' mix, but it can't be with the limited tracks on the multi available, it does seem in keeping with the music. So I think Bob Clearmountain has done a good job with what is there. I'm not sure what score I'd give it, probably overall a 6->7. Musically its not my favourite Band album that is 1970s "The Band" (with Up On Cripple Creek on it).

Overall its a nice package, if you can find it at a reasonable price get it. Even though it is an iconic album at £81.99 it 'feels' a little steep for some photos, a booklet, 2 LPs, a 7" single, a CD & a BD-A.

A review of the box today over at The Second Disc. In regards to the 5.1 mix, Joe says:

"...the real highlight of the Blu-ray is undoubtedly Clearmountain’s new surround mix in DTS Master Audio HD and Dolby TrueHD. This isn’t the first time Music from Big Pink has been released in 5.1 audio; Don Gillet mixed a version in 2002 for a DVD-Audio release. The new surround mix adds vivid dimension and an enveloping sensibility on “To Kingdom Come” (dig the clarity of the piano in the left rear channel!) and “Caledonia Mission,” just two of the tracks which make particularly good use of the rear channels in highlighting the contributions of each Bandmate. Other tracks are more conservatively mixed, such as “The Weight,” but the results are never less than interesting as the ear can’t help but pick out a new part or line previously submerged. The vocals are well-delineated on “In a Station,” and on “We Can Talk,” the voices of Manuel, Helm, and Danko are very much all around the listener. In a nice touch, all of the bonus material has also been mixed into 5.1. The new stereo and surround mixes don’t, and shouldn’t, replace the original, but do offer valid and compelling alternatives."

Snood's arriving from Amerzon tomorrow also :dance

Mine is not.

Screw 'em, will pick up Wednesday at Wally World.

Unreal. There are some real pieces of work there.

Here is my sad tale...I had ordered from Walmart and the projected delivery was for Wednesday...and I was ok with that...then amazon comes in at the last minute and undercuts the Walmart price and also offers a guaranteed Friday delivery...so I sign up for prime and pay an additional $2.99 to get it today...so I checked yesterday and the music hadn't shipped yet...so I checked again this morning...and still no shipping...so I had a long conversation on the phone with amazon today at 11am and the manager I spoke to said it will still be here today...in this long conversation I pointed out to him that there are 6 Fufillment Centers in Florida and one is only 85 miles from my residence...so I'm expecting the delivery today...and he agreed...so a little over 2 hours had passed and I receive an email stating the delivery won't take place until Thursday....so I talk to another manager at amazon and she confirms this and admits that they DON'T EVEN have the product yet...that is why they can't deliver it to me:mad:...so amazon undercut Walmart when they didn't even have the product....so I tell her to refund my money and cancel the prime and give me a full refund for the prime(my first order with prime)….

But all is not lost...so I go to the Walmart website and thru the checkout they offer me a local pickup instead of shipping...which saves me the tax I'm charged and I can have it on Wednesday...1 day quicker than amazon..so my total is $67.50 and it's very close to where I live...I could walk there if I wanted...I did mention to the amazon rep that maybe there slogan should be..."over-promise and under-deliver"
