Bit of a Who's Next virgin, having only really heard the hits, Baba O'Riley & Won't Get Fooled Again, which were great, sort of struggled with the tracks between, wasn't my thing, the bonus tracks had much better hit rate.
The mix has a sort of mature ambient quality (even though you get surprised by discrete sounds from the surrounds when you don't expect it).
On the bonus tracks really like Relay (Extended) & I Don't Know Myself (Eel Pie Sound Version). Hard to explain, a clear, not too showy mix keeping in the spirit of the times? First impression anyway 5.1.2

Mine turned up today! Bizarrely, the Steven Wilson stereo mix of My Wife is a different master to what was on the box set bluray. The box set had the Jon Astley mastered version, and this disc seems to have the un-mastered Wilson mix of this track only. All other tracks are as they were on the box set version.

The instrumental mixes are all non-mastered Wilson mixes.

Got mine yesterday. Only had a cursory listen. Sounds good so far. I don't know why but I've got this weird urge to watch CSI Miami and New York now 🤔😉

Will report back and score once I've had a proper listen.

One question I do have for those of you more knowledgeable than I is....

Why do a penteo mix for 'Bargain' when the demixing software used on Revolver is available and capable of creating a proper surround mix????

Things may have changed, but my understanding is/was that Jackson let The Beatles use his MAL system exclusively.

I may have read he let The Band use it for Big Pink. If so, I imagine Jackson’s Beatle-phile nature extended to them since they were seminal to George’s desire for a different creative camaraderie in 1968-1969. But that’s just my cockamamie theory.

Interesting 🤔

I know that similar software is available, even as a phone app, so I'm surprised they're still using Penteo. Clearly these decisions are made by people with more knowledge than me !

The more I see the less I know... and that's a pretty low bar, even if I'm not deaf, dumb or blind.

So even though I'm not steeped in the tech, I'm surprised as well. Can't say I'm really shocked. Tech is moving so fast. I'm sure Wilson knows what's out there. If I had to guess, with his busy docket and with release deadlines, he just went with what he knows and has on hand. Guess we'll all be buying another copy in a few years. Meet the new format, same as the old format.

I mean, I'd like to think I wouldn't be fooled again, but I bought the SDE in March and added this last week. Eventually couldn't resist this because I also love instrumental mixes, isolated scores, and other oddments that rarely find their way out. There are more expensive comforts to hibernate with through the insanity outside.

i don't know but i suspect because Steven Wilson is more au fait with Penteo, having used it a number of times on previous projects?

Thank you Madscot and SeanSKA01 - it was a s simple as turning the receiver to 2 channel instead of Multi. DOH!
I usually use the AFD (Audio Format Direct) setting, so it presents the audio as it was mixed, with an exception to bass management, which has some bass frequencies sent to the subwoofer. I know some receiver settings would specifically exclude the subwoofer, or exclude it if there's no LFE involved.

On the box set Blu-Ray, both the remixed stereo and 5.1 seem to have had some limiting applied (probably by Astley as you suggest) whereas the Atmos was untouched. Is the 5.1 audio any different on the standalone?

Has Peter Jackson made it freely available?
