I’m good with the 5.1 blu ray of The Yes Album. The Yes Album 5.1 surround is one of my favorites by Steven Wilson. Even with a Dolby Atmos mix, this is an easy pass for me. How much better can the Dolby Atmos mix be over the 5.1 since 5.1 mix is better than most of the Dolby Atmos mix I have heard IMO. Just another money grab.

Thinking about it, given that the box contains both digital and vinyl makes it easier for people to go in on it as a duo with one taking the LP's and the other the Blu-ray. Hmmmm?
100% true, but it's not a big market to begin with so good luck finding the right person to split the boxed set (and who gets the other odds/ends?). I was going to buy the Signals boxed set when it dropped to $111 but when I looked on eBay selling the box sans bluray was a struggle, and with the recent price drop for people like me only wanting the bluray the market for reselling the rest of the box set is going to be saturated.

But it’s not just an option to purchase a Blu-Ray. That’s like saying you can purchase a tire but you need to pay for a car to get the the tire.
...but at the end of the day, the Blu-Ray does exist and I see that as a small victory for our corner of the music world.

I just recently purchased the deluxe box of Mirror to the Sky which was a 12” art book with the vinyl, blu-ray with Atmos mix and 2 cd’s for about $125 Australian, so The Yes Album shouldn’t cost any more than that…..if it is..we’re being ripped off !
( the Yes Album only just scrapes into my top 5 YES albums so I’m happy with the 5.1 ….I’ve heard it too many times in the last 50 years )

I did not buy the deluxe set, but my Amazon order came with the artbook creased all to holy hell. I waffled around and never complained about it. But I'm more into the music than all the artbook stuff at the end of the day.

Also do the same with the Jethro Tull catalogue
As discussed in other threads on this forum, if there's money to be made and the willingness to do it, everything will have a physical Atmos release. Unfortunately the more people sign up and use the surround streaming services the less likely that will be a thing.

I don’t really understand purchasing The Yes Album again for most people if you have the 5.1. I really believe Steven Wilson nailed the 5.1 surround mix the first time and is one of my favorite surround mixes. I can’t believe a new Dolby Atmos mix could be that much better than the 5.1 surround mix. Sort of like Pink Floyd DSOM Dolby Atmos mix compared to the Quad mix of DSOM. Is the Dolby Atmos of DSOM really better than the Quad or just different…..

Believe it. The Atmos mix really takes it to another level…

The DSOTM comparison isn’t exactly apt as the quad & Atmos versions were mixed by different people (Alan Parsons and James Guthrie).

I’ll take your word for it as it sounds like you have heard the new Dolby Atmos mix. I will check the Dolby Atmos mix out if it ever gets released on Apple Music. If you have heard the new Dolby Atmos mix maybe if you get time you could describe / compare the differences between the 5.1 and the new Dolby Atmos mixes.

I think it depends on who you ask. And maybe the situation they're in when you ask them.
I also think an important parallel issue is, how many people who already have the excellent 5.1 mixes of classic Yes albums will want to shell out AGAIN for Atmos versions? I suspect TYA is only the beginning.

And you just know in 5 years there will be something better than Atmos.... "Cosmos". Then they can resell them to us again, well, for those of us still around.

Oh gosh I hope so!

I’m one of those who has the 5.1 and will shell out again for Atmos for a couple of reasons.

First, I think Wilson will continue to do what feels like an amazing streak of Atmos mixes. I want to own it because I don’t trust something on streaming will always be there.

Somewhat related, like I’m finding with upgrading a stereo CD to 5.1, it’s hard to go back to a stereo if the mix is good. I could see myself hearing the Atmos mix on streaming and thinking how unlikely it would be to listen to the 5.1 if I had access to something that sounded better and did a better job of filling the space I’m in.

Obviously, though, that’s my take. I’m bummed that this may only ever be in a set that some people can’t justify paying for. And if people are happy with 5.1 and feel Atmos isn’t radically better (or they can access an Atmos mix on streaming), that’s totally fair.

I can think of titles I bought on 8-track, cassette, vinyl, CD, SACD, etc. So yeah... they’ve got me figured out. If it’s an album I love, I’ll buy it over and over in a new format.

Yeah, I'm sure we all have a substantial list of those. It's better not to think of it. When you do the math you can't help but feel silly.

I’m hoping we eventually hear some good Atmos news from the other “pillars of prog” bands... ELP and Jethro Tull. It would nice to know if there are any Atmos plans for them.

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Aqualung in Atmos at the very least. Not quite as confident with ELP, but fingers crossed.

Prog was made for Atmos.

I'll just have to wait and see on the Yes. I do love what Wilson did with the 5.1 mix, but I also love Atmos.
I did buy the last two Yes releases but they were reasonably priced.

I still have music coming I pre-ordered, and my budget is about shot for this year.
If not for the remix in Atmos, it would be like buying the Deadwing BD when I already have the DVDA. I passed on the BD BTW.

Time to take another look at the 2023 list on QQ and see what else is coming this year.

tell ya what, SDE, I'll buy you if the new SW Atmos mix makes the 'Perpetual Change' middle crossfade occur across the left-right plane (as on the brilliant original mix) instead of the front-back plane (where SW decided to be 'creative').

(yeah, that probably won't happen, so, probably not going to bother.)
