I guess this means that Warner/Rhino are planning to release similar super deluxe editions for the other classic Yes albums, at least up to and including "Relayer".
As SW has already remixed all 5 of those albums, I'm sure it will be relatively easy as it was for this one to further expand these albums into Atmos
I'm in!
Trying to hold off on some of these big sets, but certain bands I can't resist, and Yes is one of them.

Ugh, well the good news is the 5.1's are getting re-released into ATMOS. The bad news, same thing.
I plan on another 30 years, so at this rate, the next hot thing will be the hologram version where the band is in your living space.
I only need 10. Maybe only 5. Money might run out early with the $$$$$ for box sets.

As much as I'd like Atmos mixes of the five classic studio albums from Yes (starting with The Yes Album) I'll be passing on all of them if they insist on the moronic decision to bundle with vinyl. Price will be a huge factor as well.

I would buy a standalone blu-ray with the Atmos mix, even a couple of years down the road, but not this big set. Who's Next was a different animal because we had previously gotten nothing in surround of that iconic album until release of the mega box. With The Yes Album, we have the excellent Steven Wilson 5.1 mix.

Regardless, the avid Yes fans / collectors should enjoy this big box.

That made my eyebrows shoot up!
But those are the same soundboards that have been shared for a long time now. Officially released a couple times now too.

Pull out the lone multitrack from the '71 show - where the two tracks on Yessongs come from - and mix the whole show in surround and then we'll talk!

From the description it looks like they are moving ahead with bundling in unwanted vinyl as well as padding out the number of CD's with "rarities" of questionable value - mono and single mixes, really? And unless the live tracks are very well recorded, these may be of dubious value as well. Finally, the blu-ray storage space once again appears to be way under utilized - no live tracks or rarities in surround or hi-res stereo included. All of this likely adds up to another very pricey box set of limited value - especially for those who purchased the previous packed and excellent 2014 5.1 blu-ray set (which has most of this stuff minus the Atmos mix and vinyl). Unless I see better info, an easy pass for me.

(FYI - the 2014 blu-ray set can be still be found, used or new, for about $30)

Here's a write-up from The Second Disc.

Wilson shares his insights into the new mixes in the set’s liner notes: “For the Atmos Mix, I used my 5.1 as a starting point but found myself taking quite a different approach on some parts of the music, partly by virtue of now having the extra speakers to place the sounds in, but also because I’ve learned a few things in the nearly ten years since I first remixed the album…I hope you enjoy The Yes Album in its new, fully spatialized form. To me, it still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded.”

No, I don’t want the vinyl, but I didn’t think $99 was too bad compared to something like Rush's Signals.

Yeah, I’m rationalizing. But it’s Yes, Atmos and Steven Wilson.

I did apply the discount code at Rhino and it basically covered tax and shipping... $101 out the door. I look forward to my “We’ve created a label, but you won’t see movement from the post office for about a week” notification in November.

Having bought it, I suspect any moment there will be an announcement of a standalone Atmos disc.

Wow!!! $99 and I'm in. That's a nice package even with the stinkin' vinyl. At least everything in the box is pretty much music. No extra chit to drive up the price.

Amazon.ca for CND$159.84 (with free shipping)
Yes - The Yes Album

Rhino US are just annoying now. Put it in their cart at $US99.98 for shipping to Canada as a comparison. Hey! Spend 2 cents more and I'll get free shipping! OK, Rhino, hit me with something to buy for 2 cents! Oh, I see: nothing. So shipping becomes $15.99...and then GST......so US$121.77 now.

Way more than Amazon.ca, but perhaps Rhino Canada (via Warner Music Canada) will do better when they get around to it (if they do).

Just a quick aside regarding the following FB post from yesterday;

SOME GREAT NEWS!!
I’ve managed to get a perfect digital copy of YES at Wembley 1978. My copy is directly off the official master tapes in the BBC archives.
It’s a 24 bit 96kHz copy - so the audio quality is truly outstanding.
The full recording I have includes two tracks not broadcast on the BBC - ‘Madrigal’ and the ‘Rick Wakeman Solo’ (‘Future Times/Rejoice’ could not be found sadly).
This two hour plus show really needs to be released by Warners. Ideally as an officially released box set.
I’ve done some remastering tests in a proper studio here in Sydney and the resulting audio quality is breathtaking (it’s far better than any bootleg broadcast you’ve ever heard of this show).
I’m chasing Warners for a meeting. If you want to see this Wembley show officially released, please let me know below and I’ll pass on your comments to Warners ?

Now that is what I would like to see released; Yes at their absolute live peak (IMO). However, JA himself was knocked back by the label when he compiled a live 'draft release' for their 50th so who knows. It would be a real shame if this doesn't see the light of day. Apologies for the diversion!

Yes is my favourite band, but I'm not convinced this boxset offers enough for me to buy it. I'm NOT a collector - I basically try to get the best edition of a given album, and, not having an Atmos setup at home, the additional value over my 2014 CD/Blu-Ray edition is minimal.

From The Second Disc writeup on this new release:

Eagle-eyed fans will note that much of the material on Panegyric's Wilson-helmed 2014 CD/BD edition has not been reprised here including some different live tracks and singles; fans are advised to hold onto that edition.

I'd encourage folks to carefully compare the content of the 2014 CD/BD release with this new package before buying. Based on the Second Disc details, it looks like the truly new stuff is yet another stereo remaster on vinyl and disc, a cd of previously unreleased live tracks (unknown stereo quality), one previously unreleased rarity track (the rest previously released on various formats), and a new Atmos mix.

Of course I'd like to have the new Atmos mix, but not for ~$100. Everyone's mileage will vary, but for me live Yes, unless very well recorded, is of limited interest (especially without video), for the vinyl and most of the rarities listed I have zero interest. Alternatively, the 2014 CD/BD release offers great value and can be found for far less.
