The bar code is the first giveaway. Even though they used the Quad cover, I believe that those fake Quads still have the stereo prefix on the spine, rather than CQ, PCQ, EQ, etc.

I would tell him for educational purposes.......when did the album come out, 1974 or something? I don't recall seeing any barcodes back then!
No need to get into the weeds about quad pressings repackaged and released in 1989 or something...."Well it could have happened, right?" Yeah....

You're right.. barcode's the clincher.. still I feel he acted in good faith.. that said the shrinkwrap was open already, so if the seller had any experience of selling Columbia SQ LPs before they would've known by the red label when they inspected it to grade it rather than the gold label. Ah well.. I'll seek out an alternative copy :)

Silly b@st@rd barcode! :D Isn't it a funny thing.. annoying in the extreme, I wish I'd known I'd have asked about the barcode/spine things  (Learning all the time!)

I remember distinctly seeing that repressing with a quad logo on it in the stores late 90's early 2000 and there is no way I could believe that the disc inside would be a "positive" for SQ repressing.
Unless they used the SQ metal master or an encoded Reel, you would have to bite the bullet on that one Adam, sorry.

At best I was disappointed that Sony would do that without using SQ masters, hell in Japan they were almost all single inventory SQ in my observations.

"Quadraphonic Sound And Remix Supervision : Phil Ramone"

How sad that the artist himself - allegedly - wants these Quad mixes to remain under lock and key now.. they could only enhance, in addition to the late gentleman's numerous other great achievements, the legacy of Phil Ramone, imho
(I've heard all the Paul Simon Quads already and to me they're excellent.. why Paul Simon refuses to license these now, as has been alleged, I simply cannot fathom).

Oh yes.. If anyone spots that semi circular "C" shape bit of detritus in between the plastic sleeve and the rear cover...

..it's a bit of dried up old masking tape that fell off the gold label, seemingly covering the "Quadraphonic" lettering on the outer rim of the disc label, a similar strip of tape of which is still stuck to the label on the other side of the LP.

How odd!

Can anyone here shed any light on what the dickens this is all about?

(I omitted to mention but since I started playing through these LPs, I noticed The Johnnie Taylor/Eargasm SQ LP I picked up the other week also has this circular band of white tape all the way around obscuring the "Quadraphonic" logotype on the labels of both sides of the record.)

Fredblue

I suspect that tape was an attempt to further de-quad the recording in order to sell it as stereo. Yes some idiots could not grasp the meaning of compatible.

Just one of those things that happened in the later 70's during the"FALL OF THE QUAD EMPIRE"

I actually think the tape was to mask the Columbia brand and replace it with the CBS brand as they are two separate labels in the UK. I have also seen these on Columbia discs in Canada that were pressed in the US but not sold as imports. I have them as full circular bands and as quadrants over two quarters of the label, i.e., covering the word Columbia, but not the word Quadraphonic, and replacing the Columbia with CBS and the logo. These are usually gold with red or blue writing in my experience. You will also see US sleeves with a gold or white sticker replacing the stereo catalogue number with the quad one, or a UK replacement catalogue number. Some of these stickers have peeled leaving only white underneath, which is what I suspect is your case, Adam.

Ah yes! That must be it! Thanks! The Paul Simon and Johnnie Taylor were both seemingly imported by the same organisation back in the day and have the same importation sticker on the front of the sleeve!

Continuing my Project 3 odyssey with this little haul that arrived today, quick listens to each confirms SQ for Tony Mottola's 'My Favorite Things' and Enoch Light and The Light Brigade's 'Charge', the rest are QS.

In addition I got one more Ovation quad to tick off the list (single inventory only I believe for this one) but is it EV or QS? There's only one way to find out...and I hope it's QS.

Two absolute smashers here to take off the Project 3 list too - QS for Tony Mottola (which is pressed on the bare minimum amount of vinyl you need to make a record!) but Louie Bellson's Breakthrough is for sure confirmed as QS, channel placement matches the Quad reel almost exactly. The Bellson is so crankable as well, with tons of detail to the arrangements that really shine and sparkle. 'My Own Person' (track 2 side B) is an utter knockout in terms of quad presentation and dynamics. Get a NM or sealed if you can though, surface noise kills this one. Really wish Enoch and Louie had have worked on another quad. It's the best Jazz record he put out as far as I am concerned.

One last entry for today; thanks to Rustyandi's detective work an unknown QS treat in the form of Gloria Gaynor!

Sealed and ready for Friday night listening :smokin

Edited For those wishing to know what the wax should read to be QS, you are looking for these. Also the breakdown in Casanova Brown is quad-tastic and worth the $7 alone. Get a 1975 first pressing if you can, the pressing is a little shrill but it's superior disco for those that do.

UPDATE - it sure sounds like QS to my ears, track two opens out with a clear split L/R in the rears for percussion and an extra guitar. Very well engineered with some lightning picking going on.

Adam, given your SQ/QS odyssey has begun, I wonder if you'd care to indulge in a fantasy covers compilation challenge? I just listened to 'Take Me To The Pilot' on 'Charge!' and it's awesome - so quad it's almost ticklish with a soaring quartet of trumpets and trombones freestyling against each other throughout and I'd vote it to open a Quad Elton John covers album. I'll throw in number two as well - 'Rocket Man' from the 'John Keating Space Experience' SQ album because the vibes are immense (and the fonts are Helvetica). Obviously any other QQers should pitch in, just I'm aware of Adam's fondness for Reg.

Inquadwetrust,

I thought it was Mark Anderson that received the confirmation that Gloria Gaynor was indeed QS.?

RE:Albums In The Quad Discography That Are Not Quad-thread post#28

At least I think that's what it's stating?

Sorry, my apologies - I thought it was Rustyandi that started it and Mark Anderson and others confirmed it with their sleuthing. It's possible it's spread out on more than one post and I only saw one. My sincere thanks to anyone involved for finding it at any rate and thanks for pointing it out Fizzy :smokin
