Picked up a couple of the REM DVD-A's the other day; New Adventures in Hi-Fi, and Automatic For The People. They were in the used CD bin, marked at $12.99 each, so I was a bit surprised when they rang up at $8.54 for the two of them; apparently, they were $3.99 each! I may have to go back and pick up UP as well, if only I liked REM a bit better......

This 2L release that contains a Blu-ray audio and SACD of Valen's String Quartets arrived today. While there isn't a huge difference in sound, the Blu-ray sounds marginally warmer and richer. It also seems to be mastered at a slightly higher level. Of course, there is a time lag between comparisons while switching discs (I'm using my Oppo 95):ideally, one would have two identical Blu-ray players that also played SACD so the switch between formats would be instantaneous. Still, I give the nod to Blu-ray for this comparison.

John Wesley Harding - Bob Dylan (Hybrid SACD),
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan (Hybrid SACD),
The Phantom Of The Opera (OST) - Andrew Lloyd Webber (Hybrid M/C SACD).

Phantom marks my 300th SACD (according to my sa-cd.net Library).. only another 356 to go and I'm done!

Bargain! :) Go and treat yourself to 'Up'!

I'm desperately waiting for my copy of Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' on SACD... the wait is, quite literally, killing me :(

Its worth it, I prefer the SACD to the DVD-A, I reckon I've bought this 5 times now. Vinyl when it came out, CD, remastered double-CD, DVD-A, and recently SACD.!

Interesting...
I do not have the SACD, nor do I intend on buying it...
Is it because the "ease of use"?(No menus, etc., although my oppo plays the MLP automatically once it's inserted)
Maybe , it's a rare instance , like Tomita's "The Planets" that DOES have a real extended range for an SACD...
Care to post a freq spectrum of a sample of the SACD?

Cheers....

(BTW, I think the DVD-A is a showcase of what DVD-As could be, but that's my opinion...oh, and Jon's too...I think... :) )

Ultimate Mancini - Henry Mancini (Hybrid M/C SACD),
The Sugarhill Gang - The Best Of (DVD-Audio).

What's that Sugarhill Gang disc like? The one I've seen (on Silverline Records) always looked "unofficial", much like the awful Gary Numan 'Anthology' disc they released about 10 years ago.

the DVD-A goes straight into auto-playing the opening track, with or without a TV, it couldn't be easier.

it'll sound better on the DVD-A too.. as is my experience with everything I have on both SACD and DVD-A, the DVD-A's are more detailed.

the only benefit I can see of having the SACD would be the CD layer for ripping/the car/iPod whatever.. though the mastering may just be the common or garden remaster which is alright but not a patch on the LP/DVD-A..

..but that's all just my twopennuth :)

The other benefit (for me anyway) was that the Japanese SACD was available for $30 rather than the rarely available DVD-A which normally sells for twice as much :(

As for SACD vs DVD-A quality, in my experience, I've found titles in both formats that excel the other. Ultimately, I think it's more a matter of taste :)
