The other benefit (for me anyway) was that the Japanese SACD was available for $30 rather than the rarely available DVD-A which normally sells for twice as much :(

As for SACD vs DVD-A quality, in my experience, I've found titles in both formats that excel the other. Ultimately, I think it's more a matter of taste :)

fair enough.. though I guarantee you could still find the DVD-A for that kind of money.. (I'm almost tempted to do it now, as a challenge/to prove the point!).. I've done it several times in the last few years, having missed out on it when it was new, I thought I might not be able to find it cheap.. but it can be done if you persevere and look everywhere whenever you get the chance!

horses for courses and I respect your opinion/findings.. but I'm sticking to my guns, these things sound better to me on DVD-A.. and I've many of the same titles on both, including practically everything released on both formats by UMG back in the day, there's quite a few, among them albums I know inside-out (e.g. GYBR & Gaucho) and the SACDs are great and if there wasn't an alternative I'd be none the wiser.. but the DVD-A's just have that "breath of life" thing going on in the top-end that the SACDs just don't quite have, for me.. and believe me, I love my SACDs I'm not slagging them off for a second! :D

Interesting...
I do not have the SACD, nor do I intend on buying it...
Is it because the "ease of use"?(No menus, etc., although my oppo plays the MLP automatically once it's inserted)
Maybe , it's a rare instance , like Tomita's "The Planets" that DOES have a real extended range for an SACD...
Care to post a freq spectrum of a sample of the SACD?

Cheers....

(BTW, I think the DVD-A is a showcase of what DVD-As could be, but that's my opinion...oh, and Jon's too...I think... :) )

Listened to the DVD-A again as well and I don't think there is anything in it. I don't have any kit at home that'll do a wide enough capture of the SACD o/p, but if I can borrow one of the LeCroy oscilloscopes from the lab I'll have a go and get it to do an FFT. Amplitude resolution won't be that good but it'll show the spectra - though I'm not sure what the o/p low pass filtering cut-off frequency is on the Denon DBP-21012UD analogue outputs.

I'm normally of the opinion that if its been properly mastered for the format, and the original (analogue usually!) recording is good there is no difference. On my first Pioneer multi-player 575A (I think it was) I prefered the DVD-A o/p. For ease of use I go for SACDs mainly on the grounds that you put them in the machine and they play - no software in the way. That said the Denon is great as most times it plays the hi-Res 5.1 of DVD-A with only a few discs software causing it to wait for the audio option to be picked.

Curiosity got the best of me. This is front left channel of Rumours from both hi-rez formats. Can you tell which one is DSD and which one is MLP? :)

I concur! Every dvda I have IMHO sounds better than its sacd counterpart. Not only that, the dvda provides all the extra's that they're know for. Rumours dvda, for example, has the "making of Rumours" with tons of behind the scenes information spoken by the various band members.

A few others that come to mind where the dvda is better than the sacd is Beck's Sea Change and Dire Straits BIA.

Whoa, that looks great for SACD (the bottom one!)...well whaddayaknow???
Thanks for the post....
Gonna have to try to see other ones that "may" have REAL extended freq response!!!

Yes, the bottom one is the DSD. It's interesting that the MLP goes to 48K Hz and the DSD goes to about 39K Hz. You would think the DSD would go to 44K Hz, but a filter has been applied.

thank you for all the neat info :) how much of that "Rumours" DSD signal above 20K is ultrasonic gubbins (if any) or is it all high-rez music going on?

forgive my ignorance but I don't know what to look for in those graphs regarding what's "musical" noise and what's just "noise" noise..!

Great to hear, bought it based on a review I read here...I have high hopes for all these :)

the Belafonte's a brand new AF release right?

never heard of that "Limon y sal" DualD.. what's that all about? is it Dolby Digital?

ah..it may have been me raving on about the Lalo DD!? I PM'd Jon about how good it was and he kindly added a QQ Poll

Yeah, the Limon y Sal is Dolby Digital and so far it is not bad, but not overly impressive either. I'll check out the Lalo tonight :) Thanks for your raving review, I hope ;)

anytime! (although I ought not take the credit if it wasn't me raving away that inspired you to buy it, I do feel chuffed that I got a QQ thread/poll for it knocked up to get this unsung hero some attention!) :)

Sorry forgot to respond to the Belafonte release. It is a very recent if not new release. Good sound on this one...I have a hard time judging the sound quality of some of these remastered older recordings.
