The other benefit (for me anyway) was that the Japanese SACD was available for $30 rather than the rarely available DVD-A which normally sells for twice as much
As for SACD vs DVD-A quality, in my experience, I've found titles in both formats that excel the other. Ultimately, I think it's more a matter of taste
fair enough.. though I guarantee you could still find the DVD-A for that kind of money.. (I'm almost tempted to do it now, as a challenge/to prove the point!).. I've done it several times in the last few years, having missed out on it when it was new, I thought I might not be able to find it cheap.. but it can be done if you persevere and look everywhere whenever you get the chance!
horses for courses and I respect your opinion/findings.. but I'm sticking to my guns, these things sound better to me on DVD-A.. and I've many of the same titles on both, including practically everything released on both formats by UMG back in the day, there's quite a few, among them albums I know inside-out (e.g. GYBR & Gaucho) and the SACDs are great and if there wasn't an alternative I'd be none the wiser.. but the DVD-A's just have that "breath of life" thing going on in the top-end that the SACDs just don't quite have, for me.. and believe me, I love my SACDs I'm not slagging them off for a second!
