(y) I have a few of these EMI DVD-A's with old Classical Quad mixes, including Ravel:Boléro/Daphnis et Chloé/La Valse-Martinon, Holst: Planets/Ballet from "The Perfect Fool"/Egdon Heath-Previn and this Walton one you've just picked up, Lute.. all great performances, mixed bag soundwise imho.. stupidly expensive nowadays unless you get lucky.
It's easy to get spoiled with the sound quality of new classical multichannel recordings that we can get now, isn't it!:brew

These early EMI DVDAs already show their age and show just how far we have come. You can include throw the DVDA of Kempe's famous recording of Strauss's Alpine Symphony into that mixed bag as well. It's another awesome 70s performance originally done in Quad, but the DVDA's 4.0 mix sounds cold and digital. The more recent Single Layer SACD box set has much warmer sound. To tell the truth, I prefer it. But, not only is this box set stupidly expensive, it is only 2-ch stereo. EMI needs to revisit their classic Quad recordings just as Pentatone has been successfully and inexpensively doing.

Where'd you find this? I've never found a solitary Nishimura DVD-A to this day, ultra rare.

Edit: Oh of course! You're in Japan! D'oh!

Yep. I picked it up at a local used music shop here in town. As with EMI's DVDAs, this DVDA's recording also could use a bit rate boost. In the final analysis, 24/48 just doesn't quite cut it. However, Bissie over at BIS swears he can't tell the difference between 24/48 and 24/96 recordings. Perhaps with today's recording equipment we could get a better and warmer sound image.

But anyway, I am really amazed at the fullness of the multichannel mix of this DVDA. The center channel is properly used and the rears, while basically ambient, have quite a bit of sound coming from them. All together they make this a fullblooded surround mix.

Emerson Lake & Palmer: Brain Salad Surgery Japanese DVD-A 3-disc set. Total cost shipped: $49.00 U.S. dollars. I'm glad I didn't get the box set. Yes, this does have the 5.1 lossless mix.

I've been building up my prog collection. I picked up In The Court of the Crimson King (from an actual physical store, no less) yesterday and enjoyed both the surround and stereo mixes. I've also got The Yes Album and Close to the Edge on order from the UK (even after shipping, they seem to be cheaper ordered through Headphone Dust than through Amazon US)

Please consider KC's Discipline. I was mostly unaware of King Crimson until fairly recently (thanks to QQ) and that one has turned out to be a repeat winner, well worth the time to "get" it.

Decided to take advantage of the last days of the Pentatone holiday sale (20% off) and acquire some less-conventional classical selections.
Of course, now I have added another day of backlog for my SACD ripping efforts.

All titles are on SACD in surround...

Nareh Arghamanyan - Piano Concertos by Serge Prokofiev and Aram Khachaturian
New Dutch Academy (Simon Murphy) - Zappa Symphonies
Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig (Kurt Masur) - Brahms - The 4 Symphonies, Academic Festival Overture, Tragic Overture
Gulbenkian Orchestra (Lawrence Foster) - Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, György Ligeti - Orchestral Works
Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg (Marc Albrecht) - Richard Strauss - Tone Poems
Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam (Bernard Haitnik) - Maurice Ravel - Daphnis et Chloé Suites & Ma mère l’oye

REALLY looking forward to hearing the Ligeti and the Zappa!!

Happy New Year!!

Well, I finally got the Chicago (II) DVDA. WoW! I am just amazed at the quality of the sound. Never heard it so good. I gather that the old quad mix had a more discreet use of the rear channels. Maybe someday they'll release a Bluray immersion mix with the 4.0, 5.1 and 2-ch mixes all on one disk. But until that day, this DVDA will be giving my system a good workout.
