Please post your thoughts and comments on this new Blu-Ray Audio edition of the classic album "Skylarking" by XTC.
Originally remixed in 5.1 surround by Steven Wilson in 2016, this new Blu-Ray Audio edition contains a new Dolby Atmos mix also mixed by Steven Wilson alongside Steven Wilson's 5.1 surround mix from 2016.

This is a review of the atmos mix of the album as I don’t have time (or inclination) for most extras…drum roll…10. Mr Wilson has that knack for approaching mixes that enhance the artistry and impact of the music. The songwriting and musicianship is generally strong as is the production. I don’t recall the 5.1 version being this good. Worth the upgrade.

Mr Wilson needs his own poll thread for every release he's mixed in Dolby Atmos.

I keep saying to myself can he get any better with each new release that he's mixed in Dolby Atmos?

It's a fantastic skill to have.
And for a Dolby Atmos fanboy like me, it's like I'm in total surround heaven.

This new XTC mix just transforms Skylarking beyond anything you've heard before.

Don't hesitate folks, it really is that good.

It’s really that much better than the 5.1?
Wow…that was one of my faves…guess I’ll have to plunk down again…sigh…

It sure is....the opening track just takes you on this mystical journey of Atmos mixing at its very best.

Yep, I've become a fanboy of a certain Steve Wilson.
To my discerning ears he can do no wrong.

And you get an instrumental version in Atmos ... wonderful.

I guess you’ve left me no choice 🤑

I have purchased this album six times now in different formats. It is in my top 10 albums of all time and have listened to it 100s of times. I could not resist getting in Atmos.

Overall album benefits from having the full range of speakers that Atmos can provide. Like it more than the 5.1. mix. I felt full immersion as I listened through it.

Made some notes on individual songs as I was listening.

Summer’s Cauldron

Can really hear the nature floating around you.

Grass

Don’t like new mix as much as original. The high harmony on vocal is lost as is some of the instruments being pushed back into the mix. It is the one song on the mix where the separation and space makes the song inferior to original mix.

The Meeting Place

The environmental percussion (cash register, steam) is pushed back in the mix a little too far for my liking. Other than that great surround mix.

Supergirl

Really spreads itself out. Always liked song, but 1986 mix always felt thin and compressed.

1000 Umbrellas

Wow!

Earn Enough For Us

See supergirl comments

Big Day

Really spreads out across the speakers. This song was greatly improved in a spatial setup.

Another Satellite

This song floats around you like it is in space. Was never my favorite track, but the dimension that this mix has makes me appreciate it much more. The heights add a lot to this song.

Man Who Sailed

Great use of the the full range of the speakers. Chorus vocal circles around the room.

Dying

Miss the transition with the tapping from Dear God on the original mix. Colin’s doubled harmony vocal is retained on the song unlike Grass where it was mixed out.

Sacrificial Bonfire

The song really puts a great end to the album. Great mix.

Had to give it a 9 because of the mix on Grass not really working. Almost everything else was really great and highly recommend if you have the system to listen to it.
