I don't know if SHM-SACD is defunct but Universal Japan are busy with Blu-ray Audio at the moment from what I can gather, lots of titles in the offing.

Stereo and surround, or just the former? Different titles, or ones that have already been released on Blu-Ray?

Oh I don't think it's anything for us Quaddies to get too excited about RT! Stereo only afaik, mainly Classical (Deutsche Gramaphonn included I think) with some Jazz (Blue Note or along those lines iirc?) don't recall any Rock/Pop.. most new to Hi-Res I think though one or two may have been on SACD before, they ring a distant bell but I'd need to check.. so pls don't quote me on that or indeed any of it! It was a while ago I heard about it and lot going on at min sorry

According to someone on sa-cd.net Blu-ray Audio is defunct also.

It probably is.. but then people were saying that about Quad in general and 40 years later we're still here buying it, enjoying it and rabbiting on about it... ;)

So what you're saying is Blu-ray audio will return in 40 years so we should all wait around for that.

Maybe they were talking about SA-cd.net...just saying..

It's well known that Universal has been disappointed by BD Audio sales.
We will see where that leads.

As for the SHM-SACD format, it was supposed to be used for a limited time, limited number set of releases.
SHM-SACD has lived on longer than most people expected. Whether it's time has now come to a close, I don't know.
That wouldn't be a surprise given the original plans for the SHM-SACD releases.

Do Universal know how disappointed their customers are by their BD Audio effort?

I've had it defending them.. they'd get no sympathy from me if HFPA went belly up tomorrow, they'd have brought it all upon themselves.. no doubt "consumer apathy" would be cited for the failure, rather than the truth of the matter = their underwhelming product.

You are spot on....they kept shooting themselves in the foot and then they would reload...blu ray(in general)is a great format that has been mismanaged from day 1 for both video and audio...from marketing to the technical side it's been a cluster *uck from its inception....and the shortcoming in sales will most certainly be blamed on "low interest" instead of their own ineptness..

I agree with basically all that's been said by Adam and Clint.
If Universal are disappointed in Blu-Ray audio sales, they have no one to blame but themselves. Here's why:

Screw-Up #1: Throughout the entire first year, 95% of these Blu-Ray audio releases were stereo-only discs, including a few (like "Layla" and "The Look of Love") that actually had surround mixes to begin with! Finally when enough people complained about the lack of surround, this then led to…
Screw-Up #2: Re-releasing surround mixes previously available on DVDA and/or SACD. 90% of their releases this year have been surround mixes already available on another format, so if they're targeting surround fans who already have these discs, there's definitely a less likely chance they will be willing to buy them again.
Screw-Up #3: Terrible Marketing and Promotion. All they basically have for promotion is their Facebook page, and even then, they missed out on promoting several high-profile releases, like "Legend", "Reckless", and (especially) "Songs from the Big Chair"
Screw-Up #4: Lack of standards. Different menu and background designs, audio codecs and order, bonus tracks or no bonus tracks. Nothing was ever decided upon, and so each release is different from another, and not always in a good way.
Screw-Up #5: FAILING (as of now) TO RELEASE THE UNRELEASED ELTON JOHN SURROUND MIXES! THERE'S NO GOOD EXCUSE FOR WHY THESE STELLAR MIXES CONTINUE TO SIT ON A SHELF COLLECTING DUST! THEY BELONG IN OUR HOMES WHERE WE CAN ENJOY THEM! IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, UNIVERSAL! DO THE RIGHT THING!

Am I missing any screw-ups? If so, let me know, or add them yourself! :)

Oh, I forgot one!

Screw-Up #6: NOT RELEASING "ROXY MUSIC" THIS YEAR LIKE THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO!
(This one really grates at me as I thought this could be the ultimate surround mix released this year, but I guess we're just going to have keep twiddling our thumbs until they get their s*** together on this release.)

One of my favourite surround songs, The O'Jays "Get Your Shit Together"..! :D (Dedicated to Universal..)

I knew a company run by a couple of brothers, hugely successful. One had a son who was, how shall I say, not blessed with a smart business acumen. Because of his constant nattering, the brothers decided to give him a small, meaningless (to their core business) off shoot from the company to keep him occupied and out of their hair. I see a parody here, if there were a pair of Universal brothers, and a young pain in the @ss son who needed something to play with that wouldn't destroy the main business. And HFPA was then born @:

It's rather sad (and maddening) really since Universal were seemingly quite willing to license their music (old Quads, new 5.1's, you mame it) to Brad Miller for those DTS CDs..

- Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Blvd QUAD (Polydor),
- Eric Clapton - There's One In Every Crowd QUAD (Polydor),
- Allman Brothers - @ Filmore QUAD (Polydor),
- Bachman Turner Overdrive - Not Fragile QUAD (Mercury),
- Ohio Players - Honey QUAD (Mercury),
- Ohio Players - Fire QUAD (Mercury),
- Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth (MCA),
- Vince Gill - High Lonesome Sound (MCA)
- Steely Dan - Gaucho (MCA),
- Reba McEntire - If You See Him (MCA),
- Olivia Newton John - Back With A Heart (MCA),
- Olivia Newton John - One Woman's Live Journey (MCA),
- George Strait - One Step At A Time (MCA),
- Trisha Yearwood - Where Your Road Leads (MCA),
- The Mavericks - Trampoline (MCA),
- The Police - Every Breath You Take Hits Comp (A&M),
- Sting - Brand New Day (A&M),
- Sting - Nothing Like The Sun (A&M),
- Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales (A&M),
- Sheryl Crow - Globe Sessions (A&M),
- The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Passed QUAD (Decca),
- The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn QUAD (Decca),
- Marvin Gaye - Forever Yours Hits Comp (Motown),
- Boyz II Men - II (Motown),
- Diana Krall - Love Scenes (Impulse),
- Don Henley - The End Of Innocence (Geffen)..

.. but as we know everything changed dramatically when DVD-A and SACD took over.. Universal chose not to license anything out anymore and Sony likewise so they could "focus" (ha!) on their SACD caper.. and we all know how that worked out.. it's been that way ever since, the lumbering major labels thinking they can do the Surround/Hi-Res thing better than the specialist labels.. which they clearly can't.. well the tide is turning now with Audio Fidelity..!

I really hope Audio Fidelity could work something out with Universal (some division of Universal MUST have old Quad and 5.1 titles they have no interest in reissuing ever..!?).. and Warner too for the long term.. Audio Fidelity have achieved something of a miracle with Sony.. Fingers crossed they can do likewise with Universal! :D

I would hope that one day the Sting titles could potentially be reissued on HFPA Blu-Ray.
