as you may see, spectral analysis does not show dynamic of the sound, when waveform can give
the hint on what goes on with dynamic range.
dynamic range tool implemented into foobar2000 eventually can confirm any suspicions which arise
from seeing graphical representation of signal in a waveform.

A new release date for Nick Drakes (Five Leaves Left) Blu-Ray-Audio on Amazon.de: February 2014 ;).

Universal....you really act professionally! :ugham:

We should not remember the 5.1 release that not exists......so they went to a release date far from today :).

What? Universal messing things up? Surely not?? :howl :yikes @: :slap: :xp:

Sorry for my ignorance, does Queen ANATO HFPA have a new surround mix or a previously released one?

It's the same surround mix as the 2005 DVD-V (DTS and DD5.1 on that) and it is still brick walled with loudness wars. I guess you could say it's an improvement in that it's lossless, but the earlier 2002 DVD-A is much better.

Meanwhile for me it is a real boring product.
I can not support such an unprofessional thing...sorry, but for me it is more dead than DVD-A.

I go to sleep about it now.....
:zzzzz

DVD-A's not dead! :p

In just the last couple of months we've had superb DVD-A's of
Yes - Close To The Edge,
XTC - Nonsuch,
Dream Theater..

..among others!

I feel confident there'll be more 5.1 DVD-A's to come in the months ahead too :)

I believe that fredblue confirmed its the 30th annivsary mix formally DTS and definitly comressed

thats right Fletch, it's the 30th Anniv, horribly compressed and nowhere near as good as the old DVD-A in 5.1 in any respect (mix, mastering, you name it, the DTS DVD-A is the way to go). The Stereo's alright on the new BD-A though, pretty good as it goes.

I'd go further, the stereo on the Blu Ray A Night At The Opera is the finest we've ever had and are ever likely to get. I believe it reaches the limits of what is on the master tape, given you can clearly hear tape artefacts that I've never heard before. Definitely a new transfer for the stereo, nothing else sounds like this.

yeah I posted about the very audible tape dropout and saturation over at the SHF. I don't think I bothered mentioning it here, seeing as it was just re: the stereo... it strikes me its a flat transfer of the stereo mixdown, which is a pretty incredible thing in itself I reckon and as you say must be a unique mastering for this album.

it's not amazing sounding, though it is much more listenable than the disgusting 5.1, to be fair it's been a loooooong time since I've played the old CD and an even loooooooooonger time since I played the LP, so it may well be the definitive version.

gotta say, as much as I love the album, I'd much rather have 5.1's of Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Day At The Races, News Of The World and Jazz than another version of ANATO.

I agree, a 5.1 mix of Queen II would be pretty much the holy grail for Queen surround fans. A Day At The Races would be my second choice, and that was going to be the third DVD-A before the project was dropped.

I also have the 2003 DVD-A of The Game. It's a strange choice for a 5.1 release because the aim for the original album was a cut down sound, less multi tracked than Queen had been in the past. I guess they did the DVD-A because the original album was a huge seller in the USA, but I still think it's a bad choice for 5.1.

IIRC, there've been rumours over the years of an unreleased Quad mix of Queen II, though I've never been able to find it or confirmation that it even exists.

totally with you, The Game was a strange choice from a 5.1 POV and also agree it was most likely chosen for being such a big seller in the States. turned out pretty fab in surround though, didn't it?

as a big Queen/Bowie/Elton fan, I've come to be thankful for what surround mixes we have had of those 3 in the last 10-ish years (which really is pretty good when you look at it on paper - ANATO/The Game, Ziggy/STS/Young Americans/Live/Stage, EJ/TC/Madman/HC/GYBR/CFATBDC..) considering they all got shafted in the Quad era when they were at the peak of their powers..!

Yes, but two of those were simultaneously released as Blu-ray. Depending on which sells better, the end could be near. I doubt they will keep doing both and I doubt Blu-ray will go away.

Don't I know it, I bought the Blu-ray's only (it was hard not to go with good old DVD-A.. but something's gotta give!).. I've a sneaking suspicion both formats for the Yes & XTC are selling well at this stage, so it may be too early to tell but I'd say Blu-ray's got the upper hand as you suggest, though personally I'd prefer CD + DVD-A sets for everything and anything in 5.1 at this stage of the game, you can't stand in the way of so-called "progress".

So, thus far, I'm quite unimpressed by these Blu-ray Pure Audio releases. I'm sure it is a combination of factors including that the titles aren't by any extent of the imagination my favorite music, the lack of interesting/enticing packaging, and that they are simply stereo. Sure, the sound quality is somewhat better than the other versions (CDs) that I have, but I don't think the improvement is so dramatic that it is worth the re-investment. We'll see what the others bring....and that Nick Drake had better be in 5.1

It's in stock at my local store. I've not got into Nick Drake, so wont buy it myself. But I'll check the cover for mention of 5.1.

Actually have two of his DVD-Audio discs but only listened to each once. Didnt jump out and bite me. Maybe I should try again...

Didn't have to look to hard. This was on the bottom of the 'Pure Audio' disc display stand:

Believe it or not. This is a real photo!

No Nick Drake at this store though. I will call the one I visited on the weekend and ask them to check. [edit: Phoned them. They can't tell me it's in surround as not in stock. Now I'm sure I saw it on the weekend. Their website says in stock on 22 Nov. I maybe going senile - they say it happens when you retire too early...]
