I have both of those SACDs. Mine are opened, and played. Good recordings, good surround (acoustics of the recording space).

time to open them then! :) things have a habit of getting to the bottom of the pile and totally forgotten about.. usually until someone mentions something on here and reminds me! :D

I think Otto is talking about a different album though.

these are all more "surround-y" than yer average Classical MultiCh bear

no, that's was on DVD-A only [well, beside usual CD]
i have those SACDs, bought after DVD-A with expectation similarities in mix.
sadly they aren't. albeit they not bad but isn't as good as everything was done on DVD-A which is just brilliant.

this one was everywhere for a while for about $20 but seems now its hard to find new.

Someone wants 41 UKP for it on amazon.co.uk and used at that. I'll pass at that price.

Thanks for all the info Val, I'll keep my eyes peeled for Renee's DVDA now. IIRC there was also a Vivaldi Surround DVDA from the time before Universal went SACD-only (with predominantly black and gold cover) from Decca/Universal that always looked interesting but I've never seen it in the wild for decent money so no idea what it's like.

you meant performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter?

i have this and it's good too but different and not really comparable to mentioned above.
about same time with Renee Fleming's DVD-A i got similar one Cecilia Bartoli - The Vivaldi Album. DECCA as well.
performance are good by recording terrible. bloody sibilance of voice just drives me mad.

The pictures on these last two posts look like avatars you would see on the SH forum.

I have a fair bit of classical music in 5.1 - the SACD was much more readily accepted in that world, and lives on there - but the surround mixing tends to be ambient concert hall in the rears, rather than the kind of thrilling, inventive organic sound you'd get from Elliot Scheiner or any of the greats who've mixed for popular music. It's less of an artform, more a pleasant bonus.

That said, the 2L Nordic Sound disc is simply the best-sounding BDA I've ever heard. The 2L guys are recording in the highest res possible, and really know what they're doing. I don't know why we need BDA and SACD in the same package (give one to a friend?), but as hi-res surround system demo discs go, this one's a keeper.

Hope to order this soon although because of health reasons, I have been unable to unpack and set up my surround sound system I purchased last Winter. This past Spring I purchased a Marantz NR1403 receiver, Oppo BDP-103, and a pair of B&W bookshelf speakers for my upstairs bedroom so I could at least have something for entertainment until my health improves. I also have a pair of Cambridge Bookshelf speakers that I purchased several years ago that I may or may not use with this system. Because of the size of my collection and lack of any additional storage space, I don't have the room to add a subwoofer upstairs. So for now I have to settle for 2.0.

Karlos Kleiber's legendary early 60s recordings of Beethoven's 5th & 7th with the Vienna Philharmonic are so widely thought unsurpassable that Deutsche Gramophon reissue them on every new format that arrives. They kept improving the CD versions, then there was SACD 2.0, followed shortly by SACD 5.1 (I like to think after complaints about the lack of 5.1 on the first SACD).

I first heard these on vinyl in the early 70's since my parents had these and other classical LPs in their collections.

The only surprise about seeing it on HFPA BDA is that it appears to be the 2.0 version, from what I can tell (release info is so patchy and unreliable with HFPA). As they have created a 5.1 mix already, and there is huge space available on these discs, it's just mystifying. Given that they promised 5.1 "where possible" on HFPA, this is either incompetence, stupidity or plain laziness. I'm not replacing any discs I already have in hi-res surround - Beck, Derek & The Dominoes, etc. - with HFPA versions, and most certainly not if they have reverted to 2.0 for this format. If you do buy the Kleiber, let me know what you think, especially if I'm wrong about it being 2.0.

My order ships tomorrow and if I'm lucky, will be here by Saturday. I'm somewhat hesitant to post my opinions considering my current system but since you asked I will.

Unlike Karajan - who was obsessed with recording technology (and would have loved BDA) - Kleiber almost never allowed himself to be recorded, believing the live performance was a unique event shared between himself, the orchestra and audience, so he's an unlikely source for an audiophile recording. The engineers he reluctantly let in that night at the Sofiensaal must have known what they were doing though and, whilst there are better-sounding classical recordings in existence, the music is completely electrifying.

Although it's been many years since I last heard both of these releases, I agree and hopefully they really are sourced from the true masters.

I've never opened them..

lol!!! Now you sound like me. I have at least 500 discs on various formats that are still sealed. Trying to grab older stuff before it goes OOP and prices increase and also trying to keep up with the latest 2.0 and 5.1 releases that interests me.

5.1 HFPA BDA confirmed so far (afaik):

A Night At The Opera - Queen,
Histoire De Melody Nelson - Serge Gainsbourg,
Tommy - The Who,
Sea Change - Beck,
Les Miserables OST.

Queen and Beck have been pre-ordered and hopefully will be released in the U.S. soon. I'm still debating on ordering "Tommy" since I already have the DVD-A set. Probably will wait until a few of you have it and post opinions. I assume at this point Nick Drake is still unconfirmed 5.1 although I already pre-ordered it from Amazon.com. Speaking of Amazon.com, has anyone else noticed that shortly after these "HFPA" titles are released , they are seriously increasing their prices? Some have been increased from around $21.00 USD plus tax (depending where you live) for pre-orders up to $35.00 USD a day or two after released.

The BD Audio discs are also starting to show up in the U.S. stores. Acoustic Sounds has over 20 titles in stock for $29.98 each - see http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=results&orderby=12&NewArrivals=true&LabelID=333

there may not be enough 5.1 on these Blu-ray's for the liking of us Quaddies but there is a LOT of interest in general.

I've been watching Amazon UK's stock levels deplete for the rock & pop titles - no sooner are the latest batch in stock then they're out of stock again.

these Blu-ray's are selling out! you couldn't say that back in the day with DVD-A and SACD..

sorry I got it wrong, the black/gold cover Classical UMG DVD-A I recalled seeing was Verdi's Requiem.

there's a single disc BDA version of Tommy, apparently.

when the Amazon UK pre-order went live "x" number of months ago it was depicted as being in HFPA-branded clear plastic BD case. now that the same listing has gone from pre-order to an on-sale item, the pic has changed to the 2013 Deluxe Edition digipack.

who knows for sure!? QQ folks have the expensive (but cheap thru Amazon.de pre-order balls up) box set with BDA but either nobody has bought any of the other versions/packages or if they have they're not saying what the package looks like/comprises of.

its one of the reasons I like pix of stuff posted here, it's always handy to see what we're keeping an eye out for when shopping etc.!

The Who - Tommy: Just received the single disc edition from Amazon.co.uk today, and it's a HFPA edition. I'll post pictures in the poll thread.

I may have missed in this thread since it is 45 pages long at this point... but what is the point of having LPCM, DTS-HD and DolbyTrueHD
