"Welcome back my friends…" !!!
I just listened to ELP for the first time today(Blu Ray; Montreux) and i am very impressed! The Blu Ray isn't even great but shows how good the songs are. What should i pick up first? Bear in mind i have heard no studio material whatsoever.
Trilogy is very accessible. Brain Salad Surgery is their best. Pictures AAE is quite fun. The first album is full of surprises. Tarkus is enjoyable, but might become less so with time. What should i pick up first? Bear in mind i have heard no studio material whatsoever.
I'd recommend their first record, sounds fresher and without all the excesses of the later recordings. Having said that, Brain Salad Surgery and Trilogy are pretty good
The Blu Ray isn't even great
I'll check them out. Is the reunion Blu ray worth a look? What about other Live DVDs? cheers.
Quite simply, no, it's not.
Sound mix is crap, and the performance is mediocre at best.
If you want any other live DVDs, go for the 1970s performances.
I highly recommend getting the 3-disc sets for the first album and "Tarkus" so you can hear Steven Wilson's stereo and 5.1 mixes for those first two albums.
"Trilogy" is great as well, but it's likely we will get a 5.1 surround deluxe set of that album sometime soon, so I would hold off on that one until the remix comes out.
"Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Welcome Back My Friends" are great live albums, but I would approach with caution concerning any other albums in their catalogue.
....To say the least !
If you began with this 97 live and enjoyed it, I'd say that you could pick up about anything they ever released, whether it's live, studio or compilation, and you'll be surprised. AFAIK, this Montreux show is the lowest point of their career live-wise, and one of the worst products they ever released. My opinion, of course.
I'd go with the double feature : Pictures at an Exhibition and the first eponymous album (remastered of course). If you're not afraid of more commercial stuff, the Black Moon album is filled with great songs too.
Beyond the Beginning is better than the bulk of ELP video I have ever seen.

What is known now is that BSS will be dvda, Power and the Glory bd/cd and dvdv/cd, APP 2cd/2dvdv and Drums&Wires bd/cd and dvda/cd.Silly question...
Will the new Jakko ELP BSS MCH mix be only released on DVD-A (no BluRay)???
Same question for GG TPATG and JT APP...
Best regards!
I'm now especially glad I pre-ordered the box set as the 3-disc edition is delayed until June and doesn't contain the new stereo mix on CD (a major selling point of the box for me, as I never thought the original stereo mix was that great…)
Usually it's the exact opposite though, in that the smaller edition comes out first and there are delays on the box set.
