I do enjoy some Melville. I hope Criterion releases more of their back catalog of his in 4k.
I recently watched Un Flic for the first time, drove me nuts trying to figure out who Simon was until I hit IMDB (hint, Col. Trautman from First Blood)

How 'bout them special effects? I think I said out loud, "Aw... cute" when I saw that helicopter/train scene!

Most unfortunately, Marplot, according to Blu.ray.com's video review, Criterion failed to do this UHD4K remaster any justice.

I implore you both to watch THE KING'S MAN ...... It was actually supposed to be released in 2019 but due to Covid, was delayed. I really truly enjoyed every minute of it. Actually clapped at the end which is uncharacteristic of me.

I just watched Kings Man. It might have been OK as a standalone but as a precursor to Kingsmen it fell rather short for me.
It wasn't as tongue in cheek entertaining and the action scenes rather far apart and daft.
I wont go into specifics for those that havent seen it.

That makes me sad.
Interesting read about the different colour grades. No reason why they couldn't have included the original and new colour grades on this release as it's been done before with movies like Reflections in a Golden Eye and Scalpel. I'd take blu-ray.com's reviews with a grain of salt too. They've lauded some releases that aren't that great while saying others are terrible when they're not that bad. I'd vote for seeing for yourself rather than relying on a blu-ray.com review.

While I would tend to agree regarding blu.ray.com's reviews, it seems the color grading was part of the extensive restoration done on Le Cercle Rouge. And agree that Reflections in a Golden Eye which contained both color grades was an exemplary release.

Will axiously await additional reviews on Le Cercle Rouge from other internet reviewers!

I also finished watching it about 30 minutes ago. I agree with your assessment.

The original Kingsmen movie was much better. It not only had all the spy/action stuff in it but there was also much more humor that made the movie quirky. It walked a fine line between serious and goofy making it very unique. I will say I thought this new one was better than the second one, "The Golden Circle".

"The new color grading job is deeply flawed and obviously very disappointing.."

The use of hyperbole here inclines me to not sweat a single review. I doubt a warmer color range meets that definition for me.
I am sure I will see other reviews in time to be able to take care of the next Criterion flash or Barnes & Noble sales.

thanks for the link though.

WHO DO YOU TRUST, Marplot??? ... Well, GHOSTBUSTERS, of course.

All reviews are subjective and I agree some of them should be taken with a grain of salt. I recall blu.ray.com's review for Twilight Times' "A Month in the Country." They dissed both the audio/video with exceptionally low scores. I bought it on sale directly from Twilight Time and while it wasn't the greatest, it certainly did not deserve to be dissed as it was.

And yes, ALL Criterion BD~V/UHD4K discs should be purchased when Barnes and Noble blows them out for half price ......

For new movies I rarely read reviews until after I have seen them. I generally don't want predisposed one way or the other by someone on a pulpit with their own views. I will read some afterward to see how it matches up with my own opinions/experience.

For the technical aspect of a re-release such as this, I usually read reviews at a few random locations but unless there are glaring issues, I already know if I am going to get it or not. Kurosawa or Melville in 4k, its on my list.
Red Cliff every hits a 4k, english subtitled release, day 1 purchase.

For music I actually allow myself to be swayed to try a release/band/genre based on exposure, comments here, websites, kick *** artwork, musicians I know that I like involved in a different project, chicken bones, hell pretty much any reason to try something new.

Now I did recently take a cinema course and have found myself watching movies a little differently which I believe has enhanced my enjoyment; although enjoying Il Gattopardo is still a large ask. Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale are great but the ballroom scene ... kill me now.
