The Remains of the Day (1993) 4K:

1. I got this one that actually shipped from the US store: The Remains of the Day : Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, Christopher Reeve, Peter Vaughan, Hugh Grant, John Haycraft, Caroline Hunt, Michael Lonsdale, Jeffry Wickham, Kazuo Ishiguro, James Ivory, Mike Nichols, Ismail Merchant: Amazon.com.au: Movies & TV

2. Superb new 4K image with Dolby Vision. I had to increase (make brighter) the black levels on my TV to reveal detail hidden in the shadows but I do that with every movie so it's nothing out of the ordinary.

3. New Atmos audio has very loud surrounds on my 5.1 setup. I dropped them 3dB and that fixed it. Great lows from the score and discrete surround activity (birds, people walking out of frame behind you).

4. I have the previous Twilight Time BD release which had the isolated score on a separate audio track. No mention of this on the 4K (all the other extras are the same as the TT BD though) and I didn't check to see if it was there so you may want to hang on to your BD just in case.

5. One of my favourite period dramas. Superb all round.

Thanks for the review! I'll have to grab the 4K... it's always been one of my favorite soundtracks so I'll have to seek out that BD release as well!

On July 18th, Arrow video will release both a NATIVE UHD4K AND 3D VERSION OF MARTIN SCORSESE'S EXCELLENT HUGO

I have Paramount's 3D version and totally agree but am tempted to double dip as I don't own the 4K version. And it IS a limited edition release!
I don’t know of any hardware that’s compatible with both 3D and 4K, so it’s odd that they would be releasing those discs together. Oh, wait, “Passengers” had a similar release, and the only way to get the 3D was to buy the bundle. I’m sooooo confused!

The OPPO 205 and the SONY800 series and the Panasonic 4K players handle both 4K and 3D but you have to have a 3D capable receiver and Flatscreen TV.

Alita, Battle Angel, Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's long halftime walk also came bundled with 4K, 3D and 2D as did a few European releases [Spiderman No Way Home]...but they're quite rare. I did order the new Arrow HUGO 4K/3D/2D combo

I know one of the LG OLEDs was both a 4K TV and 3D...used versions of the TV sell for $$$. I think it was the C6/E6 series.

Hoping to get some help on accessing the 5.1 sound track on the Criterion Collection of the 4K video of The Last Waltz. I’m using a Sony UBP-X800 to play the disc. The menu shows all the different audio choice’s including 5.1 Surround but it’s the only one that is not selectable. I also tried the blu ray in the same package with my Oppo 103 and saw the exact same issue. Thanks

I don't have that disc but I do have that player so for what it's worth:

1. The 5.1 not being selectable would suggest it's already the active audio track. Is it playing as 5.1 when you play the movie? If you press the Display button on your remote, that will show which audio track is currently playing in the top right too so you know what's happening once the movie is underway.

2. If not, start playing the movie and then press the Audio button on your remote to cycle through the different audio tracks on the disc. Sometimes, menu options don't allow access to everything that's on the disc due to poor quality control.

3. Could the 5.1 track be accessible as an extra on the disc? If it's a Criterion Collection disc, their menu navigation I find to be horrible but it could be hiding in the Supplements section (I think that's what they call their extra content).

Hope that helps.

It does very much! Thanks for your quick thorough response!

Rewatched this wonderful documentary for Black History Month
View attachment 63761 standing in the shadows of MOTOWN
The film focuses on the work of a group of studio musicians known as The Funk Brothers, telling their story intercut with live performances. The stories the members tell are engaging and captivating, and the performances are absolutely electric! So much fun! I watched with the DTS 6.1 soundtrack, and the whole experience brought me pure, unadulterated JOY! Interviews are crisp and clear and front-centered and the musical numbers take full advantage of the soundstage–my sub was LOVING it! So was i–very highly recommended! Don't skip the extras on the second disc, with more sonic delights from the jam session!

The Times published a belated obituary this morning of the filmmaker Paul Justman, who died earlier this year at age 74. In addition to Standing in the Shadows of Motown, he made documentaries about The Doors, Deep Purple, and the J. Geils Band (that one, Postcards from the Road, aired on PBS, and it's available to watch on Vimeo; Paul's brother Seth plays keyboards for J. Geils), and he was an assistant on Robert Frank's famously suppressed Cocksucker Blues.

Shadows has disappeared from the streaming services, but it's been uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo.

Here's a question for you movie aficionados:

I remember watching SuperFly years ago, and I was sure there was a bathtub scene after he gets beatup by the bad guys, where he's nursing his wounds in the tub & there's a track from Miles Davis' "kind of blue" playing.

But I just rewatched the film & that scene is not in it. Am I thinking of another movie? Or did they cut it out?
