Thank you for the post Failed Muso as I would also say it would be a personal thing. I will talk to my friend who has a version of DSOTM perhaps be able to listen to that album and judge for myself. Wow, it's been 5 years already sad Richard Wright was a talented musician and a good writer as well. We all should agree that the keyboards on Floyd's DSOTM was awesome. Since the only version I have in Quad is the parson's version..and yet to hear anything else...I will keep my mind open when listening to the different mixes. Thanks again for the information! :)

Album II - Kem (DVD-Audio DualDisc).

Pleasant surprise, this DualDisc is a DVD-Audio (48/24 MLP in 5.1).

On one quick listen, its got a seemingly subtle but genuinely discrete surround mix with cool things like little electric guitar "wocka-wocka-wocka-wow" & "Bom-chicka-wow" moments discrete in the rears.. tho I'm pretty sure it's 4.1!

I can't detect anything going on in the centre. someone more techy than me could put it thru a PC and check but I'm pretty sure its 4-channel.

what a kooky old disc! well worth hunting out though. very easy on the ears smooth soul, with nice fidelity for a more "modern" production, certainly not brickwalled or anything. Holy Neo-Motown quadtastic!

it's still readily available from several sellers new & sealed, including several of the eBay big e-tailers, I got mine from "BlowItOutaHere" for £7 ($11).

Another recent under the radar surround winner that can still be found for sensible money. Recommended (y) (y)

Looks like you got the last one from them They now have it on back order :(

Oh NOOOOooooo..!!!! :(

Yup, never mind. I have a few oddities winging their way to me this week to compensate, and I've just dealt with the lovely Lisa at Burning Shed who has sorted me out regarding swapping my Yes/XTC pre-orders from DVD-A to BD

This weekend I rather enjoyed:

Jethro Tull - War Child

Original quad mix from: original commercial reel to reel mastered to DSD.

The transfer could have used some EQing(the tapes sounded a tiny bit dull..) but the mix was enlightening & masterful. Too bad Quad was so expensive back in the day...

I hope Ian Anderson releases War Child, Songs From The Wood and Too Old To Rock'n'Roll in lossless 5.1 at reasonable prices (similar to ELP and the upcoming YES...)

I sure won't be buying the upcoming Benefit or Passion Play if he charges over $30 each for lossy DTS...:howl

Yes, that would be nice too. I have War Child - Jethro Tull in Quad Vinyl its in fine shape as well. I played mine but sparingly have it transfer to stereo tape :( not quad...don't have a 4 track deck yet...

Hey Dude,

Very nice informative post. :)

The one little thing I would chime in with is that Pink Floyd didn't necessarily not like AP's quad mix, Pink FLoyd is on record saying they did not believe their music was deep enough to spread out
over 4 channels, so they vetoed releasing the 4.0 mix. That was more of a no vote for Quad itself, not Alan's fine mix into 4.0.

I'm not sure if one could actually compare the Guthrie 5.1 and the Parsons 4.0. Because they are apples & oranges sound qualty-wise.

The Guthrie 5.1 remix was done from original multi-tracks with the benefit of digital processing of the individual instruments/tracks after they were converted into digital, love it or hate the digital processing end of the deal.

The Parson's 4.0 mix was taken from the old tapes a long time ago. The sound quality was locked into whatever was done in 1973. Maybe they did some basic EQ on the 4 channel tracks for the inclusion
on the recent BluRay Immersion set??? Can somebody can chime in here? Otherwise it would have been a flat transfer of the old 4.0 master tape.

Either way they both are two very different things sonically, regardless of the choices that Alan or James made in the actual mixing into channels.

For me, I much prefer the 5.1 mix. Having that extra speaker, dead center, lets you do things you simply can't do in quad. For evidence, check out Steven Wilson's 5.1 mixes of Thick As A Brick
or Aqualung. Simply stunning. Oh, how bout Steven Wilson's ELP & Tarkus 5.1 mixes...:smokin

We may give you the Analog Kid award for this year! I have always done tech for a living, but apparently not to the lucrative degree you have. Props to you:phones!

I would have loved to have heard Tull's - Warchild in quad back when I was buying records, but I could barely afford a cheap single pair of speakers back in the mid seventies... not to mention all the quad gear... I get a lot of mileage out of my Oppo 980 combo player!

What other Jethro Tull records were sold in CD-4?

Funny how you mentioned Aqualung( one of my favorites) Ian Anderson did not like the studio in which that album was recorded...in was in a converted church..Zeppelin was in the smaller studio and Tull wound up at the top..didn't like the sound at all. In fact the Masters were missing for quite a long time when suddenly Ian received a package containing the master tape of Aqualung. They remastered the album from Ian's original tape.. that's no fish story..its true.

Yeah Quad Linda I have the same LP is Quad..in fact I just placed all my quad albums back into the rack no. 1 shelf!!

I have another project ..or continuation of the same project..more LP's to digitize. Chicago 19, Black Sabbath(Rhino 180 grams)Nautilus Super Discs The Moody Blues On the Threshold of a dream. that's on the project wall for tomorrow!! I don't believe Ive ever played this moodies album..I have a stereo copy from the 70's I played several times...I like the Moody Blues!

Hi Dennis Moore Jr.
I know Tull released Aqualung....the second album I think was War Child might not be correct here..but I believe only 2 albums were quad...anybody can help here..not sure...don't like give misinformation.

About the gear!! well, I was barely 18 when I started picking up receivers for quad..My Very First Quad receiver was a Fisher 22 watts per channel came with a BSR semi-auto turntable and Fisher Speakers. The Second turntable was a Dual 502?? belt driven, then DBA 10 dolby, pioneer rt-909.got it retail for......600.00 I paid him cash on the spot!! when the unit came in he was upset...because he charged me his price not retail.. take the unit and run that's what I did!! woo hoo
