The Black Album. The DVD~A 5.1 sounds pretty astounding.

Tonight I had the pleasure of watching Lou Reed's LIVE version of his 1973 opus BERLIN. Filmed by Julian Schnabel with assistance from his daughter Lola Montes Schnabel, Berlin is, IMHO, one of Lou's masterpieces. I loved the filming and the back up consisting of a children's choir, string section, brass section and Lou's incredible band filmed in Brooklyn, NY has the benefit of exceptional sound. The rears are used mainly for ambience and audience applause (minimal) and the band rips through Lou's angst~ridden originals with a vengeance. Some powerful guitar work and amazing drumming round out this wonderful set.

Well worth investigating.

BTW, I visit "HRAudio.net" from time to time and it's like a Ghosttown. Wonder if Zeus really did make the right move. Wish Markie would post here, as well. REALLY am loving QQ. Wonderful bunch of guys!

..well, time will tell won't it.. you, however, certainly made the right move! I wish Markie and co would also come over to the Quad side.. (I just don't know what took you so long.. ;) )...this is much more your kind of place anyway.. your great knowledge of surround and Hi-Res, your enthusiasm, your thirst for new/more surround and just all-round wonderful character can bubble over here to your hearts' (and our) content.. and have you noticed even though there's a lot more traffic here than at the other place there is a lot less bitchiness.. some of the goings on there were I'm sure a big part of the turn-off of the forum section for other users AND the owners..! :D )

Powerful guitar work? Alright, now you're talkin!! Where the h*** is Markie!?

He's missing all this 'sound' wisdom. WOCKA WOCKA WOCKA! :51banana:

No seriously, it looks great. Just went in the shopping basket.

And...I haven't given up on Mark yet. So let's rachet it up a little...

I love the friendly, easygoing mood here on QQ. The only thing people seem to bitch about is having to wait and wait for our Quad treasures to get released. AAAAAAAHHH!!!! :yikes
Oh! And that the rest of the world doesn't give a s*** about the glories of surround sound.

You're probably right about people over there getting turned off (more like pissed off! :violinLOL!). With everyone thrown in the same pot, I guess it was inevitable. But even though there were plenty of Drama Queens over there, the discussions generated by the variety of users/listeners were stimulating... Stereo vs. Multichannel, Rock vs. Classical, DSD vs. PCM...
My favorite, though, was Jesus vs. the dinosaur. :ugham:

If you find the poll on this you'll see I regard this DVD-A considerably higher than many. Compared to the original LP/CD it is a vast improvement. It has balls and teeth and good separation.
It's a win in my book, even though it could have been somewhat better and I wish they'd do Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction.

As a rule, edisonbaggins, DTS Entertainment, with few exceptions, always released quality products......this DVD~A among them....an excellent album ALL around!

In fact, were it not for DTS Entertainment with their DTS RBCD releases in the late 90's and early 00's, I don't think we'd be experiencing 5.1 MUSIC only releases today.

To this day, I continue to thoroughly enjoy their older 'lossy' DTS releases and on NEWER equipment, some of them sound as good as or in some cases better than even full fledged lossless DVD~A and SACD 5.1 releases.

Thankfully, Audio Fidelity is continuing their splendid work but I will always cherish the MANY DTS releases, both RBCD 5.1 and DVD~As that they released over the years.

Oh man! I completely agree!
Ralphie and I (and Mark) were always praising the Peace Sells and Metallica DVD-As over on SACD.net. Sure... like you said, Peace Sells could have been better, but it rocks in our homes! Glad to have it!!!

And a double YES YES on Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. I wish Metallica's first 2 albums (at least) would be given the Hirez Surround treatment as well.

And what about...

Judas Priest
Slayer
Ozzie's first 2 albums with Randy Rhoads
Sabbath
Saint Vitus
Sleep
Sunn O
.
.
.

The list of great metal bands that need to be in Hirez Surround goes on and on...

So, Brett, in Markie's "absence" why don't YOU start a HEAVY METAL thread? That's what I love about you, Mr. B....you, like myself, love all types of music although I will admit, I am NOT into opera......Joplin's Treemonisha is my limit (a "ragtime" opera?)

I will email Mark sometime today and petition him to post over here at QQ and he does have Derek's email so maybe we can enlist Derek to do the same.

SA~CD.net, Adam, was started mainly because the moderator (Zeus) was SOLELY into classical music. AFAIK, he had a chronic distaste for ALL other genres of music. There was always this constant tug 'o war between the 'rabid' Classicist snobs who looked down on those discussing other genres of music.

It was fun while it lasted although like on MOST forums, some of the discussions (some of mine included) were OVER The Top and I suppose Zeus (Stephen Best) and fellow moderator (John Broggio) tired of "babysitting" and censoring those out of hand discussions.

I will continue to visit HRAudio.net from time to time to see what's newly available on SACD (and DVD~A) and read the reviews but my heart now belongs to QQ!

I did email Mark today and enlisted him to post over at QQ and since he has Derek's (Our man in Glasgow) email address, hopefully he'll petition Derek to do the same.

ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY.....and counting! :woopie

And along with moderator Jon Urban, Adam, you can be our 'honorary' den mother ala Mrs. Doubtfire:yikes

Ravel Orchestral Works - Boston Symphony Orchestra, Ozawa (Pentatone Quad SACD)

Wonderful material with exceptional fidelity. One of the most impressive examples I've heard of a surround disc capturing the hall so warmly and organically. Lovely stuff. Thanks Lute!

We are certainly fortunate to have you on this board:)

Oh right, well he and I probably wouldn't get along too well then (I had some minor interaction with John Broggio there and he was charming).. I'm all for people voicing their opinions etc but personally can't be doing with musical snobs, such superciliousness often turns into something more sinister than just expressing a preference for one genre over another when these things go online imho.. it's weird how so-called "music lovers" can have such revulsion for a 'different' form of music.. it's prejudice bordering on audio-xenophobia (I hesitate to use the "R" word! )

Right ON, Adam. And what I particularly enjoy about QQ is the utter freedom to post links to vendor sites, something positively prohibited over at SA~CD.net. As there's a little bit of E. Scrooge in all of us, I don't like to pay a whole lot for my music, especially when I've previously owned it in other formats and am re~purchasing it for the nth time.

Well, my British "Amigo" have yourself a VERY Merry Christmas and we'll continue our discussions of ALL types of music infinitum without fear of censorship. You're amassing quite the collection of SQ/QS vinyl and hope your find your Technics TT. I did have two back in the day and used to be somewhat of an "amateur" DJ ....even had a microphone hooked up. Work on that 'sexy' bedroom voice if you're to be successful. It IS SOOOOO much fun! :music

Frank Zappa-Roxy The Movie...blu ray....I'm about 15 minutes in and the sound is very good considering the age of this material...Frank is killing me with his lyrics...good stuff(y)

I LOVED every minute of it, Clint.

I'm now in the process of buying his 2012 Album remasters ALL from the original analogue masters. They really sound incredible for RBCDs. Well worth seeking out.
