Randy Newman - Little Criminals (DVD-A)

Such a GREAT album, Brett. Wish AF would release Randy's Sail Away which was formerly a discrete CD~4 Vinyl disc.

Ditto! I regularly give old Randy a spin. I'm sure Adam is playing Sail Away thru the Surround Master. ;)

I picked up Jerry Granelli - Sandhills Reunion (SACD) today. Good, discrete surround mix, but I wonder what category this music would fail into. As you said, it has jazz elements, especially the saxophones. And there's a beatnik angle with the narration. But, there aren't really songs in the usual sense. At times it even reminds me of the soundtrack to the film "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (2007). Interesting.

I listened to the samples provided for this album...of the 12 tracks only the last one had any actual singing on them(at least the sample portion of the songs)...it's more like a poetry reading with music in the background..check out his bio HERE...that disc is certainly very cheap HERE

Aaron Neville Nature Boy just to hear Danny Boy. Now I am on to Porcupine Tree Deadwing. Starting with the bonus tracks, just to hear Half light.

The Aaron Neville 5.1 is superb I reckon (it was available in both SACD and DVD-A versions back in the day, which helps a bit with options picking it up now, since its long out of print and not so easy to get these days, it was once plentiful to obtain cheap on SACD at least - the DVD-A was always harder to find - but even the SACD has gone the way of so many of these surround discs, not quite unobtanium but not mega easy either.. its worth the effort and expense imho, Elliot Scheiner takes fairly pedestrian material by the scruff of the neck and gives it a new lease on life in surround).

Allman Brothers-Idlewild South....this sucker really jams:spot...brings me back to my rock roots..I've heard these songs many many times...but never this good...the more I play this disc the more I appreciate it...

Yes Yes YES! :upthumb

I'm hoping they (Bill Levenson and Kevin Reeves) bring us lots more (unexpected and wonderful!) new surround releases.. definitely these out of the blue things like Kevin Reeves' Velvet Underground and his Allman Brothers 5.1's are very welcome, very accomplished surprise surround releases.

2015.. what a year eh guys and gals!? Here's to 2016.. I've got a good feeling... :D

Lute

Great choice. That is one of my favourite SACD'S, and I find that I use it in rotation alot.
Takes a couple of listens though.I would categorize it as Beat Jazz/Blues/New Age, very moodie sounds I think.

I have 3 other 5.0 Jerry Granelli SACD'S , but none sound as unique as this one.

Me 2! Clint.

I find that this disc is very well mixed for surround.Kevin Reeves certainly does not"cheat" on the rears.

Still listening before I post my review. It was a little pricey at $70.00 plus tax=$80.00 but I do enjoy this album and the four bonus tracks in surround make it all that much better.20151229_191234.jpg20151229_191412.jpg

If Kevin Reeves has access to the "Mercury" vault tapes, I wonder if he'll consider another 1970's or '71 remaster in the form of Rod Stewart's "Every Picture Tells A Story"? Should be about time for a 45th anniversary edition in surround, me thinks.

I'm sure he would do it if asked. Most engineers are not particular. (They can't afford to be, lol!)
But the great thing about Kevin is that not only is he good at remixing classic albums in 5.1 surround, he's also a great mastering engineer too, so he can remaster the original stereo mix while he's at it, just like he did for both "Loaded" and "Idlewild South". :)
