Ok, I just saved this posting until I'd heard several tracks... another 5.1 classical disk that barely uses the rear speakers. I compared the 5.1 to the stereo tracks and yes there is a difference. The 5.1 has a larger room feel and on brief occasions, I thought I heard parts coming from the rear as well as the front speakers. I tried turning the amps mode to Multi In + Neural:X to give me more in the surrounds but it didn't really help. And another disappointing thing, what's up with the "cannons" on 1812?! I was so hoping for startling loud fun cannons, but we got weird sounding pop/bangs... really disappointing. Hell, the booming bass drums are louder during this track!. I have now gone online and checked out some reviews of this disk and I see I'm not alone in my criticism of this recording/performance... another just ok disk headed to the bottom shelf....

I was a band geek in school and played in our school bands for 8 years. Later in college, I sang in our chorus and performed with the Macon and Columbus Symphonies. Being on stage within a large group, surrounded by music is a wonderful experience that I miss. I really have no interest in listening to classical music "from the audiences" perspective. If I buy a 5.1 surround disk .... I want to be surrounded by the music, not sitting here wondering if the rear speakers have any content.

If anyone knows of any good SURROUND recordings of classical orchestras, please let me know.

i'd seen that disc divide the crowd over the years.. so i passed on it for the longest time.. when i finally got it i sat there like "err.. i know what they mean, this is not good!" (or words to that effect..) 😂

fwiw, since i'm a Classical neanderthal this is far from the most qualified recommendation but the best/most surround-y 1812 i've yet to hear is the CBS Quad from 1972, mixed by Ray Moore (who did the Quad of Bitches Brew, nuff said!).. it is as rousing a hoot as ever you'd want! however, right when it gets to the cannons is at the end of a very full side of the SQ LP and its a bit of a torture test of any turntable setup to have such wildly dynamic stuff going on so it kinda all fell apart and felt a bit compressed or something!? i'd hoped to transfer my Q8 tape to see if it was murky like the LP but my deck went tits up so that's that.. but the SQ is still worth hearing, it totally kicks the coconuts off that Telarc rendering at least! boom-tastic!!! 💣

Just arrived finally a good Surround of Gustav Holst:- The Planets.
Its the best I have heard, grew up listening to the Planets, my music teacher had a weekly session explaining each track so grew to love it.

Hamilton, the TACET classical label excels in MOVING SURROUND SOUND which means you are literally SURROUNDED by the instruments.

One morning in an exceptionally bright UK, Adam awoke from his golden slumbers to feel something strange at the bottom of his bed .... no, it wasn't a severed bloody horsey head but rather a bust of Ludvig V Beethoven. Perhaps an epiphany, he thought, of how he had heretofore shunned the classics in deference to surroundy rock 'n roll and other assorted pop ditties.

And he flashbacked to how Kal Rubinson, ubertrout, humprof and yes, even 4~Ears with his well over 1200 Classical SACD/DVD~A/BD~A collection had frequently posted on QQforum, their love of the classics, heralding some of the most mellifluous melodies ever written and after imbibing a third cup o' java, got busy on his trusty iMAC rummaging through the thousands of pages of HRAudio.net furiously ordering hundreds upon hundreds of priceless classical SACDs [in ambient surround] to play catchy uppy on his paltry selection of ultra discrete chic classical SACDs.

And the rest, as they say, is HISTORY. Adam 'fredblue' of the UK has indeed become a CLASSIC FANTASTIC LOVER! Perhaps as a wee tyke, he refused to eat his peas ....... but as his mum and dad used to say: 'Try it, you'll like it,' and thus Adam has graduated from being a rabid CLASSICALPHOBE to a genuine lover of MUSICAL LORE!

I have this too and have always been underwhelmed by it and disappointingly so, since the redbook has always been fantastic, and a speaker killer with the bass when the cannons fire off.

to me this is a great example of 5.1 btw., up there with Mr. Clearmountain's best work (and that's some benchmark, as well we know) 🏆
