Nice one :upthumb Look forward to your reaction to the mix and so on in the fullness of time :)

Lovely stuff. Thanks Lute!

Glad you liked it. That SACD is one of the more immersive polychoral surround recordings I've heard. It's not discrete mind you. But rather the rear channels are more active than usual with the reflections of the voices. It works very well.

Btw, I ordered The Power and the Glory Bluray. Is it basically the same as the DVDA version?

It's DVD-V, not DVD-A so you did right by getting the Blu-Ray version.
Same content, except that the Blu-Ray has it all in High-Res. :)

This just arrived and I'm really loving it. I had given up on any classical surround sound titles over a decade ago as they always seemed to only have ambience in the rear channels. But after reading Lute's comments about Tacet I decided to give this one a try. Truly discrete mix with lots of activity in the rears. I will have to check out more of Tacet's catalog.

Thanks Lute!!! :music

Oh, also, I got it from importdcs.com who, I am finding, seem to regularly beat everyone else's prices. Thanks to everyone here who pointed them out. I ordered it along with a copy of the stereo SACD of Excitable Boy. I bet they don't get too many people putting Bach & Zevon together in the same order!

DVDV!? Phew! And to think I almost went for it due to its lower price.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease! :D

Thank YOU! It's reassuring for me to know that my posts on Classical music are relevant here.

And I am really glad to hear you are getting back into Classical in surround. Not only are we getting some great reissues of 70s Quad recordings, such as the ones done by Thomas Mowrey, on PentaTone. There are also a lot of terrific new surround recordings available. Along with TACET, the Norwegian label 2L also has some spectacular 360 surround recordings. https://shop.klicktrack.com/2l

My pleasure! :) I've warmed up to Jävri's approach and enjoy his recordings very much. His Schumann is also excellent, especially Symphonies no.3 & 1. Here's a review...http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/6807.
A good alternative is Dausgaard's cycle on BIS.

I think you'll really like the Gabrieli (...if you can handle a whole lotta brass! ;))
It's powerful, moving music. I absolute love it!
Give it time to grow on you. It ages very well.

Thanks but hold on youre helping me spend my money too fast!
Your analogy to George Szell has moved me to buy the Rossini overtures set. I adore szells Haydn symphonies and have several original vinyls and cd collections. I just found a copy of a radio promo of his Beethoven 8 and Shuman. 4 symphonies

even without surround or stereo great music is great music.

Who knew that DG has 300 quad performances in the can?
These two threads have been some great reading.

Oh sorry! I get carried away with music so easily. :friday: LOL!

Perhaps I shouldn't post the above Single Layer Stereo SACDs on this thread (sorry again), but

I have long been an admirer of Szell, too. His Wagner Ring highlights recording is another desert island disc...along with the Schumann. Quite a few of his recordings have been released on SACD... http://www.sa-cd.net/search/Szell And fortunately, many of these were released a second time, so it should be possible to find them at more reasonable prices than when they were OOP. It's surprising that his Haydn symphonies haven't found their way on to that format. Hopefully, that situation will be rectified someday.

Yes, older recordings...stereo, mono...and Quad are wonderful, too. I hope you like Marriner's Rossini as much as I do. The one complaint is that although it includes Barber of Seville, some other famous overtures are not included, for instance The Thieving Magpie, William Tell, and Semiramide. Marriner did record all of Rossini's overtures, but only those on that SACD are in Quad. Anyway, I am ecstatic to have them.
