Earth Wind & Fire - Open Our Eyes SACD/Quad

It's so funny....we all set our bars so high for these releases....and sometimes when we first listen...we are disappointed. But...this disc sounds simply amazing to my ears right now. So good..

EDIT - guys...I've got this flat out cranked and it really sounds so excellent. Whoa...

Sometimes it takes a couple of plays to get involved with a title...could be nothing to do with the disc...you could have had a bad day or weren't in the right frame of mind to really listen to the music...that's why I try not to vote on the polls right away...I've had discs that I only played once or twice and put them away for a long period of time and when I play them again I wonder why I felt that way about the disc and they sound great...for me...my emotions play into the evaluation process...it has to "speak to me"...if I don't get that connection I get bored with it...which means it's banished to the shelf...

It just seems like a tuneless dirge..! A dirge-er-ee-doo..! :p

I've not got the houseroom for a real didjeridu so this will make for a neat in room substitute! Next up a quartet of wobble boards in glorious 5.1..! Just so long as they don't do a surround disc of Rolf's Stylophone, or that's one disc I will actively eschew..!! :D

I have not had the opportunity to listen to Rolf's album, so I don't know exactly what your ears were subjected to.

As for the Didjeridu, I agree it is an exotic instrument and therefore probably an acquired taste for most people...especially when the grunts and growls get going. But, I find its sound very meditative, hypnotic and pleasurable. Its role in Sculthorpe's quartets actually isn't so overwhelming. Often, it plays the part of the traditional basso continuo and blends in with the cello. At other times, it takes the role of solo instrument and we get an interesting chamber ensemble similar to Mozart's & Brahms's famous clarinet quintets. The music is more modern, though... and has a mood that's more similar to 20th century (or even Beethoven's late) string quartets.

Sounds positively wonderful..! I have an aversion to the instrument (blame Rolf Harris! :p ) nevertheless I shall add it to the shopping list on your recommendation :)

Yeah, unfortunately Rolf Harris made the instrument into the Didgeridon't for this listener...:yikes

It's AVALON time..that disc just picks me up no matter what the circumstances in my personal life...it's funny...before my involvement in surround music I wouldn't have given this album the time of day...but now I couldn't imagine a collection without this disc..just love it...

Thanks QL for that YouTube link. "Root Beer Rag" is an amazing piece, and it's awesome to watch him play it. Especially back then when he played it at a full speed ahead pace.

Argh! How crazy do I have to be to buy that disc at the prices it's going for right now?
With all of those other WB CD/DVD-A sets I just recently bought, there aren't too many older DVDAs left that I really want to have in my collection, so I'm turning my attention to a few older SACDs that I'm still hungry for like "Avalon" and "Boys & Girls".
I just have to keep being patient...

It can be bought for around €70,- and I don't think you will ever get it any cheaper than that :couch
