Johnny Mathis - The Christmas Album SACD- The fidelity and surround mix on this are just awesome; Johnny's voice is sounding smooth... Great!
The new Rush - A Farewell to Kings in 5.1 DTS-HD MSTR
What a Lovely boxset this is I'm glad I decided to go for it, I don't suppose I'll ever play the vinyl (All I need is the 5.1), or wear the ring, but I know it's there and can look at it from time to time. I'll probably only read the booklet once too, but the music is the best I've ever heard it and the video that goes with it is great too!

RTF- Musicmagic
I think this was actually my favorite release of the year. It's just such an unusual recording and the quad mix is a blast. It's awesome that Columbia commissioned quad mixes of obscure/unknown stuff instead of just doing the popular albums of the time. Of course, they did curiously miss a lot of good popular stuff (Aerosmith S/T, Boston, etc), but that's another story for speculation in another thread...
Also, though it's obviously redundant now that the SACD exists, the SQ LP of this title is surprisingly good. I recently found a copy with a promo stamp at a record store ($16- I guess it's not rare anymore). Sounds really good compared to other old Columbia pressings and decodes well. Maybe I'll frame the jacket or something...
the SQ LP of Musicmagic is, imho, an exemplary, umm, examplar, of a really great SQ LP
It definitely is one of the better ones...I suppose Columbia decided to end their dual issue program on a high note. Some are absolutely awful though (looking at you, Chicago's Greatest Hits and Maynard Ferguson Conquistador).
Best quality SQ's I've heard though are some European pressings. They seem to be pressed on much heavier vinyl. DP Machine Head, the EMI sampler, and anything on the Studio 2 label sounds fantastic. Unfortunately my copy of DSOTM doesn't sound too hot though...the loud parts of "Us and Them" are tough to listen to. Worn out I guess. It is on Blu-Ray after all.
I'd assume those CBS-Sony Japanese SQ pressings are pretty good too. The CD-4 discs from there are definitely the best.
Conquistador is a funny one.. having more recently had the opportunity to compare the SQ as decoded by the Surround Master to the Q8, most of the SQ seems to decode pretty well.. yet other things splat/disappear, chiefly in the Rocky track but also some other weirdness going on with the SQ.. a topic perhaps deserving of its own thread, although i fear/suspect we may be the only participants in the chat!

"Joel D. Parker from Tel Aviv, Israel highlights the new DSD 256 Stereo & Multichannel release Confluences performed by pianist Josep Colom on Eudora Records. This is a native DSD 256 recording with no DXD processing. It's a Top 10 Best Seller at the NativeDSD Music store. He also praises a second Colom DSD 256 Stereo & Multichannel album Dialogue which is also available at the Native DSD Music store.
Joel says “My search for recorded music that actually sounds real and doesn’t wear down the ears began with vinyl, and eventually I found DSD, which has the warmth of vinyl but the clarity of live music. Now I try to convince my musician and audio-tech friends to give it a listen. I haven’t touched a turntable in ages.”
Turning to Confluences in DSD 256, Joel tells us "Confluence, meaning “the place where two rivers flow together and become one larger river” (Cambridge Dictionary), is a well-thought through solo piano album that interweaves Chopin and Bach in their barest form. It is a delightful follow up to the Spanish virtuoso pianist Josep Colom’s previous album with Eudora, Dialogue, [also available from NativeDSD here] combining the music of Mozart and Chopin.
Colom provides listeners with an intellectual journey that can mesmerize novices as much as it seduces connoisseurs of the piano. This adds to the intellectual intrigue offered here, which was originally recorded in 256 DSD and 5.0 channels to allow for a potentially cascading wall of sound for those equipped for the ride."
First listen to the big Rush box, wow it's a very big improvement, both surround mix and fidelty. :music Steven Wilson is a genius!
Haven't got any graphics yet, the box is to big for my little scanner, have to use camera. But the numbers shows better specs for the new mix.
Hope Steven does his magic on more Rush albums!
Probably you can save a copy of the box picture that is on the Poll Thread......I usually do that with the Vocalion discs...
