Also.....

I believe you can still purchase this quad encoded cd......at least a couple yrs back I saw it was being re-reissued. Being it's a quad encode only release, it should still be , I reckon.

My copy is on the French label Spalax...but I believe it's on a Euro friendly German label now.
Great! It seemed that there were a couple of different versions available on CD, so I was wondering about that. I will go back over my tracks and see if that’s one of the one’s I had seen. Thanks again! :giggle:

The Surf City Allstar Band “I Get Surround” DVD-A ... I’m really enjoying this; good surround mix (great vocal mix with lots of harmonies in surround); good choice of surf songs that haven’t been overplayed... and you get to hear Dean Torrence (Jan and Dean) and Jeff Baxter (Doobies & Steely Dan). Cool! (www.aixrecords.com)

Oh, and Matt Jardine, too (The Beach Boys)

You know.....

It seems a bit silly of me but I actually preference this disc in SQ Quad encode.

Hell I even have it on my MP3 player....and although a bit of the SQ is not going to be decoded via earbuds...I don't mind one bit.....it's really quite good.

And bizarre that mp3 stuff.

Listening NOW !! To the lone SQ quad track from Bowie's greatest hits cd.

Taken fr The Serious Moonlight Concert...SQ tate encoded,

Bowie -Ashes To Ashes.....the best version of this song, fwiw.

Spooky Action - Paul Draper (5.1 DVD-V in book/set w/CD)

well i'll get the bit we at QQ are probably most curious about out the way first, seeing as this artists doing their own surround mixing, or rather their engineer P-Dub is, with no surround music track record (afaik?) and they mixed the upcoming Mansun 5.1... this is a really active surround mix with synths, effects, guitars and vocals popping up all over the place!

its a lead vocals all round style mix (drums in all channels too, though more upfront and somewhat muted in the Rears from what I can make out).. extra little vocal bits unnervingly sneak up on you from one of the Rear speakers! creepy i says! 😱

musically, i love it! its pretty upbeat in a way (i don't know why but i was expecting it to be a slog to sit through!) there's a lot of light and shade, there's hard edged dark stuff with layers of moody electronic noises going on (its spooky alright!) and drama a-go-go, amidst super catchy poppy tracks, like "Things People Want" i was singing along with that one on my 1st (and only so far, I'll give it another spin later) playthrough of the disc, just a brilliant track! i guess in the old days it would have been a hit single! (old fart alert: do they even have those anymore? 😉 )

lossy/regular DTS @48k is the best 5.1 on offer here, for those to whom it matters and while I respect its a big deal to some QQ members and I used to care more myself about such things years ago now I don't care so much, I'm mostly just happy to get "new new" surround music and in its own right it sounds great to me, so that's that elephant out of the room!

tbh I'm more bothered that such a great album's excellent surround mix should have had so little fanfare when it came out and now be so hard to get, unless you fork out for the limited edition set with a book (now officially sold out afaik).. if I were the artist and/or label, I'd maybe try a reissue of the CD + 5.1 DVD in a cheaper jewel case configuration or just do a 5.1 Flac download thru Burning Shed or something, more people here should get to hear this, i'm sure it'd go down well with a number of members, I think its fab but a bigger fuss needs to be made of such a release - and for the surround offering to be readily available to purchase - if we're to have a brighter future for 5.1 than it's past (in me ever so 'umble opinion!).

Mega EDIT: Hold the phone!!!
Ignore the 1st bit about the engineers' credentials!! I was totally wrong! It turns out this P-Dub chappy is Paul Walton who did all the 5.1 mixes of Björk's back catalogue and the Goldfrapp Supernature 5.1 mix... so if you like those in surround you'll know what to expect from this one! Phew..!!

If you like the Barenaked Ladies at all, I think Maroon is the DVD-A to have - their best clutch of songs, and fantastic Don Was production. It's a shame none of their earlier albums were retrofitted for 5.1, I think they were already in decline songwriting-wise for the albums that followed Maroon (Everything to Everyone and Are Me/Men) that did make it to DVD-A.

Also, for the people picking up some of the old/new D-V SACDs, please weigh in on them in the poll sections, either with a vote or a comment - it makes a massive difference to their visibility beyond QQ. Look what happened when the Rush AFTK BluRay (briefly) made it to the top of the QQ polls, it showed up on Rush's official facebook page.

i almost regret giving away my 2nd sealed copy.. but thats not healthy, one should never have regrets! although todays hangover.. uh oh.. 😉

serious hat on for a sec., 🎩 it's f-in' ridiculous that this is now out of print.. but then you can't blame the label for not pressing up enough copies, they could only sell every disc they made.. and after all "surround doesn't sell" anyway, so its just as well they didn't make too many copies of the only Hi-Res Surround release of an album by one of the biggest bands on the planet.. i'd be 'lmfao' if it wasn't so dumb!

Divine Theatre: Sacred Motets by Giaches de Wert - Stile Antico (SACD)

What a beautiful recording this is! Perhaps old sacred music won't generate a lot of excitement. But, how lucky we are to not only get an excellent MC Hirez recording from Stile Antico but one that includes the gorgeous music of this little known composer of the late Renaissance. The surround mix is basically ambient. The voices aren't separated around the room as in a 2L recording. The rear channels are used more than usual to effectively create a full, immersive soundstage, though.

Buxtehude and his Circle (SACD)

CHRISTIAN GEIST (c.1650-1711) : Dixit Dominus Domino meo; Die mit Tränen säen
DIETRICH BUXTEHUDE (c.1637-1707): Jesu meine Freude, BuxWV 60; Gott, hilf mir, BuxWV 34
NICOLAS BRUHNS (1665-1697): De profundis clamavi
FRANZ TUNDER (1614-1667): Dominus illuminatio mea
KASPAR FÖRSTER (1616-1673): Confitebor tibi Domine

Theatre of Voices
Paul Hillier

Here is another wonderful recording & performance of old sacred music. This one is from the early baroque and centers on the composers of Baltic area of Northern Europe...in particular Dietrich Buxtehude who had a major influence on J.S. Bach and Händel among others. The music for voices and small chamber orchestra is calm & meditative. The recording is ambient, but the DXD recording beautifully captures resonance of the Garrison Church in Copenhagen.
