Spooky Action - Paul Draper (5.1 DVD-V in book/set w/CD)
well i'll get the bit we at QQ are probably most curious about out the way first, seeing as this artists doing their own surround mixing, or rather their engineer P-Dub is, with no surround music track record (afaik?) and they mixed the upcoming Mansun 5.1... this is a really active surround mix with synths, effects, guitars and vocals popping up all over the place!
its a lead vocals all round style mix (drums in all channels too, though more upfront and somewhat muted in the Rears from what I can make out).. extra little vocal bits unnervingly sneak up on you from one of the Rear speakers! creepy i says!
musically, i love it! its pretty upbeat in a way (i don't know why but i was expecting it to be a slog to sit through!) there's a lot of light and shade, there's hard edged dark stuff with layers of moody electronic noises going on (its spooky alright!) and drama a-go-go, amidst super catchy poppy tracks, like "Things People Want" i was singing along with that one on my 1st (and only so far, I'll give it another spin later) playthrough of the disc, just a brilliant track! i guess in the old days it would have been a hit single! (old fart alert: do they even have those anymore?
)
lossy/regular DTS @48k is the best 5.1 on offer here, for those to whom it matters and while I respect its a big deal to some QQ members and I used to care more myself about such things years ago now I don't care so much, I'm mostly just happy to get "new new" surround music and in its own right it sounds great to me, so that's that elephant out of the room!
tbh I'm more bothered that such a great album's excellent surround mix should have had so little fanfare when it came out and now be so hard to get, unless you fork out for the limited edition set with a book (now officially sold out afaik).. if I were the artist and/or label, I'd maybe try a reissue of the CD + 5.1 DVD in a cheaper jewel case configuration or just do a 5.1 Flac download thru Burning Shed or something, more people here should get to hear this, i'm sure it'd go down well with a number of members, I think its fab but a bigger fuss needs to be made of such a release - and for the surround offering to be readily available to purchase - if we're to have a brighter future for 5.1 than it's past (in me ever so 'umble opinion!).
Mega EDIT: Hold the phone!!!
Ignore the 1st bit about the engineers' credentials!! I was totally wrong! It turns out this P-Dub chappy is Paul Walton who did all the 5.1 mixes of Björk's back catalogue and the Goldfrapp Supernature 5.1 mix... so if you like those in surround you'll know what to expect from this one! Phew..!!
