Great sounding dvd, nice discrete surround mix and fidelty (dts) - not the best pq though.

- in 5.1 stereo surround sound :smokin

Edit:

Enjoying this surround mix by Frank Filipetti, I found some info about him and Phil Ramone recording a Elton John concert in 2004 - The Radio Muisc Hall Concert. Using 114 microphones (!!!??) and mixing it in a "on stage" fashion.

Read under the Maximum Orchestra headline:

https://www.soundonsound.com/people/phil-ramone-producer

Is this 5.1 recording to be found on blu ray or another media?

Well that concert and 3 other DVD's are included in a set called Dream Ticket...I purchased it a few years ago...and sadly only watched part of 1 disc...which sadly is the case with many of the DVD's I purchased for audio only consumption....you can buy a used one very cheap HERE...one of the reasons I didn't really take the time to listen to it...is that IMO the blu ray Elton 60 is more enjoyable...the DVD's picture is awful...bordering on VHS quality...and the performance and PQ of the blu ray is outstanding...the surround really isn't a factor...but the performance and song list make it a go to disc for me....HERE

I agree, the pq is bad. But the sound/surround is much more important than pq for me. I almost never play front heavy concert discs - excellent picture or not.

The One Night Only - Greatest hits will be played a lot here, I love it!

I owe you Spock...I have purchased quite a few DVDs for the sound only...but the last 2 years with my medical issues I had gotten lazy and settled for the PQ and forgot my roots...but thanks to your post it rekindled my interest in the audio portion of these discs...I listened to the entire one night only concert and I'm listening to John Fogerty Premonition DVD now...another fine ES mix.....this one

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos 12 & 17 (SACD)

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields
Alfred Brendel (piano)
Sir Neville Marriner (conductor)

Beautiful, warm sound and playing. The 1970 Quad recording hardly shows its age. Surround channels are basically for hall ambience, but provide a nice full sound. A must for Mozart fans.

That's nice to read Clint :) hope you enjoyed the show as much as I did. I read that the mixer, Frank Filipetti is a drummer, and I think he mixed the drums in a great way - placing them in the rears at times. I read that he mixed the Live at Beacon Theatre show with James Taylor - I seem to remember you recommending the dvd? Not a discrete recording as I recall you describing it - but great anyway? I ordered it :)

Thanks for bringing Premonition to my attention, excellent sounding show, playing it now! :LB

Premonition was one of the earlier DVD's that truly sounded spectacular. I mean, those crazy swamp critters chirping behind you.....wow! And, the DVD looked great........

On my little Sony CRT that is. hahaha....now it looks horrific on my 75" HD 4K TV. Of course, I'm sitting 5' from it. Hmmmmm

I usually zoom the picture to a size where I think it is ok - on those bad looking dvds, like this:

A little bigger than native resolution. I use 1080p from pc to my 4k tv.

Can't let bad pq stop us from enjoying to excellent surround dvds:LB

We like to do a new song. This song is called Premonition. But you knew that.
-John Fogerty is funny :)

Wait a minute...75" TV...when did this happen...I bugged you for years to get a 65"...which I thought you did....I've been watching the progress of the 2018 LG OLED line and the 77inch model is now under 10 grand...I remember when LG first rolled out the 55" OLED..it was 17 grand.....I've been watching this one

Good catch Clint. As I was typing that, I thought I was confused about what I had. I had to go check...lol. Yes, it's the same 65" I bought a year or 2 ago....
