Yep, up until Windows and whatever the Apple equivalent was at the time, you needed to be willing to get technical (at least a little). Once the "user friendly" GUI screens showed up, the prices had come down to reasonable and the whole thing took off exponentially. The internet made it useful to the average person. The last component, high speed modems made it enjoyable to browse and opened it up to all kinds of desirable practical and frivolous applications.When I was still woykin’ fo’ da man, I occasionally noted that when I graduated from college, the closest thing to a PC had an S-100 bus. I never had one of those, but I did have a Hp-43, which could do conditional branching.
Without a GUI, though, I doubt if PCs would be anything like they are now.
