So when The Tipping Point was first released last year, I grabbed the indie-exclusive green vinyl version. I wasn't impressed with the sound. It was really lacking in dynamics. Later I noticed some comments elsewhere on the net that said that the black vinyl pressing was the way to go. And then the other day @Clint Eastwood posted about Bull Moose's 25% off vinyl sale. I went a little nuts and bought a bunch of titles including the Steven Wilson LP in the above photo. (The Moose owes you a commission Clint!) I also decided to give the black vinyl edition of The Tipping Point a try, and it was a good call. Much better sounding than the green vinyl.

It's been a year-and-a-half since this album was released and it still blows me away. It stands up very well against the best of their 80's heyday. I really struggle to think of another band who can put out an album forty years into their career that rivals their best work. I've seen the band four times since the album was released (twice last summer and twice this summer). Each time they played seven songs from the album. With most heritage acts, if they play one song from a new album there's a massive exodus to the bar. But at every TFF show I saw the crowd was fully engaged with the new material. It's just an outstanding piece of work. Probably ties Hand.Cannot.Erase for my favorite album of the 21st century.

The sound of the actual vinyl or the sound of the mastering?

I purchased the Target Exclusive and returned it because the mastering sounded very one dimensional. Similar to how the latest Simple Minds LP sounds.
